View Full Version : I have pneumonia

Please pray for me and my family.

The regular old viral flu bug cascaded its way through our family last weekend. I ran a fever all day Monday (a holiday for me) and Tuesday started a week's of consecutive training for my job that is infrequently offered.

Tryin' to be a hero, and windin' up a zero, I went to work in the sub-zero weather in a vehicle that doesn't provide heat until about 20 minutes into the drive. I completed the training and tried to rest in the evenings, but two of our kids have been having fits due to diarrhea and rash.

Yesterday around 3:00 I started to feel colder and colder. I hung on, and put my coat on 15 minutes before I walked out of the building.

Most of us are still coughing as part of the standard-issue recovery of the flu, but I ran a 104 fever for about 8 hours yesterday. My wife finally managed to get ahold of our doctor, described the situation and symptoms, and the doctor called in antibiotics for me. My wife promptly went and fetched this medicine for me (bless her heart) and it is helping some. However, the last time I had pneumonia I was flat on my back for two solid weeks, and weak for months afterwards.

I covet your prayers.

Carl

I'll pray for you, Bro Carl. There's a lot of junk going around in our neck of the woods too.

Ex 15:26

King James Bible
And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee

Praying for you....I know what you are going thru as I had pneumonia that almost took my life last year.....God touched me and I am still here!
Just a question, where in the world did you find a doctor that would prescribe medication without seeing you....I didn't think they made those anymore....lol

Especially antibiotics......Unless it is a refill and even then it's hard here in TX. to get a doctor to do that.

Being flat on your back is the worst thing you can do with pneumonia.

Do you have an incentive spirometer? If not, make sure you do breathing exercises. It will feel horrible and painful, but it will benefit you and get you healed up faster.

Every hour you are awake, take in ten deep breaths, breathing in moderately slow. Hold for about 2 seconds (if you are able, might not at first), and breathe out completely after each breath.

Also, cough and deep breathe every hour. Take a deep breath and cough. Do this two or three times an hour will awake also.

This will keep your lungs from being tight and getting tighter. It will also help loosen the mucus in your lungs.

Also, remember to keep hydrated. Water is best, but no milk.

Thank you all. I am amazed at the response.

Just a question, where in the world did you find a doctor that would prescribe medication without seeing you....I didn't think they made those anymore....lol Our small-town doctor used to do this for us, because she learned to trust in my wife's judgment. Mostly this is about prescribing the same medicine to successive children as prescribed to the one she saw in person originally, so we didn't have to drag four little kids into the doctor's office four times.

When we moved to the big city, this was my wife's chief selection criteria as she called around looking for a new doctor: Willingness to call something in without an office visit. 80% of the time it seems like kids come down with stuff on the weekends when the doctor's office is closed. :rolleyes2

Being flat on your back is the worst thing you can do with pneumonia. That was figurative. I was stopped in my tracks. I missed two weeks of school my senior year. I didn't spend the whole two weeks lying on my back. I also laid on my side, and shuffled around the house a bit . . .

Do you have an incentive spirometer? *gasp* I'm quite sure that's against my religion!

Yes. Thank you for the reminders. There's plenty of coughing whether I'm "exercising" or not.

And what I've learned the hard way is that the flu is nothing to mess with. I'm sure that part of the mitigating circumstances that made my doctor willing to call in the meds without seeing me is that the flu is going around quite busily here, along with the secondary infections of bronchitis and pneumonia among people that don't take proper time to recover. *ahem* :whistle

So the doctor was told: We all had the flu, I went back to work the day after, subjecting myself to temperature extremes, description of the symptoms, confirmation from me, who has had it before, that this is definitely what it is. Pretty reasonable if you ask me. I'll go in to the office to get checked out on Monday. In the meantime, I've started the antibiotics and avoided the germ-infested emergency room.

An incentive spirometer is a little device that has a meter (looks like a disc) and a hose with a mouthpiece to measure the volume of inspiration (inhalations). When you inhale, the disc will rise until you are done inhaling, then go back down. There are metered numbers on the side that tell you what level of inspiration volume your lungs are at.

Without a pic, you are probably lost....LOL!

I am recovering nicely. My lungs are clear, and only a minor cough lingers. I feel up to going back to work tomorrow, and yes, I'm going to take it easy!

I don't want no steeeenkin relapse!

I am surprised at how quickly I got over it. The last time it was a week or better before the antibiotics began to make a dent.

Thanks to you all for your concern.
