How many times have you heard a speaker say "We need to win the lost!" rah rah rah or on the more negative end "If you haven't won a soul lately your (fill in the blank)".
I always hated those sermons since they never sat down and explain the methodology of how to share your faith and disciple someone. Its hard to whoop when someone is doing a nuts and bolts training and it doesn't fit into a "camp time" sermon.
We just had Tim Downs who is a UPC evangelist (if you havent heard of him you will soon based on his results) agree to make time on his schedule and come April 9-13th , 2008 to Harvest Temple UPC in Baytown (South East Houston). (which is a whole miracle story since he was booked until late 2008)
This guy is a real hitter, he doesnt just do sermons that cheerlead, he goes out until midnight from Wednesday to Sunday and wins ALOT of people right next to the saints, he does a combo of training sessions and spends hours and hours going out and doing the work. He gets out there and work along side the teams of saints during the 5 days. When it comes to work ethic he is amazing.
If you are a independent or non-UPC and would be interested please don't be scared of asking if you can join us and help out, our ministerial staff has a mix of different brands of apostolic (and its ok!). If you want to come and help and learn with no strings attached contact me and I'll gladly get you the info.
This is a good opportunity to get both session and real life training on how to witness to folks on the street and take them back to get baptized. He literally forces the churches to keep the water warm since he is baptizing folks the entire time he is here.. hes a monster soul winner.
You can visit our site at www.HarvestInBaytown.org or you can call me at 281-235-6630 if you are interested in learning while you help.
Once again I stress this is open to everyone UPC or not.
Here are some true numbers of what he has done since December of 2007 (last 4 months)
Louisville, KY - Rev. Hollis
150 First Time Guests / 46 Baptized
Palm Coast, FL - Rev. Brumfield (super small home missions church)
69 First Time Guests / 20 Baptized
Aberdeen, MS - Rev. Jerrod Jones

i didnt even realize he was on here :)
I will beat some imbicile to the punch. How many of them will stay?
The next step is to train people how to disicple and mentor these new people in basic christianity 101.
I'm happy about the results. A td for TD. Keep up the great work.

Learn how to win souls ? Learn to preach, faith comes by hearing ,hearing the word of God.It must be the truth because perverted word don't give faith. That's why we have so many leave the church all the time.

I heard he went to CLC and they had 10,000 get saved.
Sorry, I couldn't resist. It's my bitter, disgruntled spirit coming out again. I have to air out my grievances at least once a week to keep the wounds fresh. :)

It was brief but bloody and I lost. Names are ok as long as it's not certain names. Certain people are off limits. That's ok, it doesn't change the truth of what I know and saw and experienced personally. I'm not bitter...I'm better. sniff. I good looking, smart...and darn it, people like me! :)

Puhleaze...Surely you aren't saying that all we have to do is just preach more? Or hear more preaching?
Here's an opinion.
You have to do more that "hear" the Word. You have to be a doer of the Word.
Check out Matthew 7: 24-26
This scripture would indicate that maybe we have people leave the church because they aren't building on the rock.
Are people getting frustrated and quitting because they can't understand why they aren't growing spiritually and they are listening to tons of preaching?
To build on the rock requires more than just "hearing" preaching. It requires doing what the Word says.
In short, it takes more than hearing preaching. We have to become doers of the Word.

Here is this weeks schedule and you can get our church address/info from www.HarvestInBaytown.org
This guy is amazing, myself and several of our saints helped out at the Church in a Day project in Port Arthur (the McCoys) on the outreach team and we baptized 5 right off the streets with Tim.
Wednesday Night 7pm:
The First night of revival will be preached on the importance of reaching our world! We will go to the streets right after service is over with whoever can go!
Thursday:
Outreach 1:00pm – 4:00pm & 8:00pm – 12:00am
Friday Afternoon:
Outreach 1:00pm – 4:00pm
FridayNight Service:
This is the seminar service, I teach different ways of personal evangelism and the important things needed to be a soul winner. This service is for the most part teaching only. We will show 3 short video clips approx 4 minutes long. We have material that we hand out for future reference. If your church does not use video please let us know. We will need a projection system to show the videos.
Saturday Morning Tag In 10:00am:
This is basically a question and answer service and then we break up into teams of outreach. Once we have our teams ready we go into the streets hanging door hangers and passing out flyers. This is usually a great motivator, people are excited about what they have done and the easy way to reach the lost. Testimonies are welcomed to build enthusiasm.
We take a break from 6:00pm – 8:00pm At the tag in at 8:00pm we get ready and go back into the streets, I go with a different team to help show them affective ways to reach souls. At the end of the day most people are tired, we usually have some that are all fired up, so I take a team of the more excited saints back out into the streets until usually around 2:00 am. We generally find some really hungry souls on this evening mission.
Sunday Service: - 2:00 pm
This is the service where all of our work pays off! The Bible says there is profit in all labor! The Pastor preaches a message that would make the righteous repent! We believe it is important for the message to be preached by the Pastor so the new people will know who the Pastor is. Some times Evangelist come in and preach a message and the next week the new comers will expect the same person to be there.
We see many people who have come to the service fill the altars. The saints help work the altars and see what God has done! I will give the altar call after the message is preached. Please allow time to see what the Lord will do.
As people arrive we have saints set up at all doors to help guest fill out an information card. This card is used in the drawing for the giving away of prizes. We then use the guest card for follow up on all the guest that have come to the service.
After the altar call, I take all the cards from our guest and begin drawing for winners! We also take time during the drawings to assure guest that this is an awesome church and they will want to return soon!

I will probably be crucified for this, but this statement "Learn how to win souls" has always irked me a little. YOU have a brain in your head and a mouth. That's all you need. You don't need to be "taught" how to win souls. Anyone with common sense and a brain can win souls. Open your mouth and begin to tell what God has done for you and people that you know and you'll catch someone's attention.
It's not really what we do that counts anyway. We only plant the seed, GOD GIVES THE INCREASE.....HE WATERS the seed.
Go ahead, kill me. I'm ready and waiting.

Sorry to disagree with you Sis. Most of the time I do agree with you, however, on this I do not. I have found not everyone has common sense. Don't even know why it is called common anymore, seems to be a lost art, so to speak.
All can open their mouths and sing, but the sound may not be too pleasant. Same in witnessing, all can open their mouths, but many lack wisdom.
Many lack confidence, and need to be taught what has worked and what has not. Allowing of course, that what works for one does not guarantee that it will work for all.
I also believe some plant, some water, according to their gifts. Many receive a harvest they didn't plant. But as long as all the glory goes to God who cares?

That's precisely why I said, "Anyone with common sense and a brain." Not everyone has common sense, I know that, but most of the time if you are sincere in telling what good things God has done for you, you will catch someone's attention.
What works for one may not work for someone else, is true. So is the fact that the area in which you live is a "contender" You HAVE to trust the Lord to help you in witnessing and and working in outreach.
Just like you can't be taught to sing if you can't, you can't be taught to "win souls." Your talent or your giftings lie elsewhere.
Not trying to be mean or argue, just a little quirk of mine.

Tim is on this forum, incase you all did not know it. I have seen the effects of his work which were good. But unfortuantely I have heard some negative too. But you can not believe all you hear. I commend what he is doing. He has that fire for seeing the lost saved.
There was a new church plant in Tempe, AZ and he did amazing work there, but not all the people stayed but you can not expect all to stay. That chuch still have over 100 there. I know people in Knoxville, Tn that go to the UPC church there and he did a meeting for them and had a good turn out. His brand of outreach works from what I can tell.

Want to clarify my post here. The 'negative' I have heard is nothing bad at all. I was very minor and was about giving a sub par altar call one night. Tim, though I do not know him personally is a good guy from what I am told. He do respect all he does and wish that I could do the same as he does. I hope that this post was did not offend or hurt anyones perception of Tim. I would recommend him cause I have seen what his work does. It changes lives!
Tim, personally I would like to apologize for any hurt or inconvience this may have caused. I should have clarified what I 'heard'. But I do want to mention that I do stand by the part of my post where I said, "you can not believe all you hear." I do want to mention that the people that told me this about Tim also said that one nights altar call was the only down point of the whole thing. People DID receive the HG that night as well as others. So please forgive me if the post caused any harm.
These are for you!

132 First Time Guests and 22 Baptisms with Tim Downs and Mark Grisham today.
Enough said.
You are going to cause a riot when you tell the blue denim whales they have to smile while they are shopping. Smiling and saying hello are two of the best tools of soul winning. You don't have that, you don't have a snowball's chance in July of winning a soul. The followup is easy. Be friends. Be real. Not EVERY thing has to be about God. My wife and I were mentoring a family for 3 months before we even brought up baptism. We got more than we bargained for. We got the whole family. We were expecting just mom and dad, but the kids wanted baptized as well.
I heard one person say if a visitor doesn't connect with at least six people in your church within six months, they will be out the door. I've seen that proven true time and time again. Get them connected with the right people and they will stay.

Check your pulse to see if you are still alive, but I agree with you.
The Bible says when the Holy Ghost is come upon us, we will have power to become witnesses. Too many times witnessing turns into a doctrinal dogma. The best way to witness is to be a friend. One can influence long term change by befriending people instead of pounding a religious dogma in their head.

I couldn't agree with this more!!! Case in point:
I have been taking a Citizen's Academy at the Sheriff's dept. and have never identified myself as Pastor. The Jail administrator and I are friends and I also teach a 2hr class there once a week. Our class last week was a tour of the jail. As we went in, one of the ladies saw my name on the sign in sheet to enter the jail and said that she noticed I was there once that day already. She asked what I did and I told her. Well, they used me as a demonstration to show how to "extract" inmates from a cell when they were uncooperative. I kind of got beat up a little. Cuffs, shackles, restrained in a chair, the whole works. Anyway, this lady talked to me just a little and I was kind to her. She asked where I pastored.
Long story short, she was at church this Sunday. I recognized her as the only person @ NLC that has EVER seen the pastor in cuffs and shackles. We had a great service and she said that she would be back.
We regularly have people visit who our folks have met in the course of their lives just by being Christians. Have we moved so far from that, that we now need a formula for reaching souls, because our Christianity is so weak and watered down.
I think it is a shame that we have to have some special person basically "hired" to get people to come to church. But that's only my opinion! :D

Sounds great ... update us in a couple months on how many are still there. In most cases, it would be good to find 5% or less that are still in church after a few months.
Good reports though, albeit mostly a numbers game.

Thats a bit cynical, you assume we don't have things in place to retain and disciple to prevent attrition.
Many were there for loaves and fishes, but in the crowd there were some future disciples... kinda similar to what Christ experienced.

That's for the person who contacted TD last night and completely misrepresented and took out of context the post above. Whoever did it needs to learn to read and should contact him again to make it right.
Nowhere in the post above did I mention TD or what he did. Nowhere did I say anything against him or what he does.
You lying little devil, whoever you may be, need to apologize, make it right and stop trying to stir stuff up.
:smack
I was none too happy to wake up and find a voice message from someone who quite angrily defended TD and was upset at what he heard I wrote.
Now, the person should have looked for himself, instead of taking someone's word for it -- I don't care who the person is. Never take someone's word and start accusing someone with only someone's word to back you up. In most cases the person relaying the quote, message, etc, embellishes or in some way takes it out of context to make it something it's not ... either deliberately or intentionally.

Evidently I need to include some kind of a disclaimer that either excludes TD or lets people know that I'm speaking in general ... and not specifically about anyone nor any church.
That said, I stand by my post, and I know others who share my opinion, in most cases churches who have this kind of influx ... in most cases, they are good to keep 5-10% of those in church after a few months.
I've grown up in this, I've seen church after church have revival and yet there is always a turnover. It happens even in the churches who have retention programs in place.
I'm glad for the reports, but I'm even more so when I see the stats after a few months that show retention and spiritual progress of those brought in.
