View Full Version : Which Preachers Have Especially Blessed Your Life?
Preaching and in particular pastoring is a very tough calling. Dealing with people in the way that pastors have to, or at least should, has to be very draining.
I know that sometimes pastors must feel under appreciated so I wanted to start a thread where we could give honor where honor is due.
My childhood pastor was a great man and I will post about him a little later in this thread.
But for now how about some of you getting the ball rolling with some stories about men of God who have impacted your life?

Well, there have been preachers that have blessed my life. I know from some of my posts that may be hard to believe. But it is true...which is what inspired me to walk in my calling - at one time...
My first pastor, Bro Michael Day - Living Way UPC in LaPlace, LA and his wife, Nora are a blessing to me. Their prayers are still on us to this day...almost 20 years later.
Pastor Mike and Sis Sybil McCormack, Total Life Ministry Center of Decatur, GA, they really helped us in GA.
Pastor Searcy of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, recently destroyed in the tornado outbreak in Lafayette TN early last month...they gave us a place to stay after Katrina in TN. I called them and they are doing fine, but unfortunately, one member was killed. My prayers are with them..
Bro Mike Sartin, pastor of First Pentecostal Church of Marrero, LA...he has been a tremendous blessing to my family and I since returning to the N.O. area....
Pastor Peggy Ratliff of Holy Trinity Outreach Center of Jefferson, LA (yes, she isn't UPC)...she prayed with me a week ago and I believe God used her to save my life. God Bless her!
Apostle Patricia Porter...after the marital breakup and abandonment in Arkansas, that woman of God has been such a blessing to me. She is now on a missions trip to Africa. I pray God stays with her...she invited to me join along, but couldn't on account of the kids...
And yes, I even thank the preachers who broke my heart and trust this past year. God allowed it to happen for a reason.
One of them allowed me to opportunity to work in ministry. That was a blessing, in its season. For that I thank him.
And to my ex husband, he even blessed me in that I knew at that point that it was apostolic all the way for me or no way at all. That is a blessing, to have my faith renewed in the truth, even if I am not fully ready to live up to it at this time....
God is faithful....
Blessings....

Growing up TF Tenney is my all-time favorite, although it's been prob 15 years since I've heard him. More recently I'd say Dallas Willard, Brennan Manning, AW Tozer, Donald Miller, Rob Bell.

My preacher influences have nothing to do with preaching ability. I look back on my life and see how much of a positive influence my Grandfather was on me. He was a teacher more than a preacher. But now that he is gone at times I pull from my memory bank many things that I didn't realize actually took hold. He taught me so much and has influenced many things that now make up part of my character. I don't think I would be who I am today without this great man.
I also have to give some props to Pastor Poster (like his head isn't big enough :ursofunny) I have known him for some time and spoken casually, but there have also been a few times in private conversations that he has greatly inspired me and given me great words to live by. I know he is gone from here now but I wanted to take the opportunity to thank him for his tenacity and love for the Word of God. I think that he is a trailblazer and has enlivened me to seek the will of God.

For me jsut about any of the Manguns, but Anthony specifically. His messages are challenging to me. Keep reaching for the lost. I enjoy many preachers. Jentezen Franklin, Bishop Jakes these are great men too. I have had several minister to me or touch my life in a way that is not easy to put into words. So are men you will never hear of then some are you may know first hand. I enjoy messages that challenge me to move out of my comfort zones. One of my all-time favorites is the late Bishop Patterson. But when it comes down to it the person I alway think of as the best I know personally and has touch my life in the closest way is Kevin Knudson. He is something else! It it almost like a campmeeting message everytime he preaches. IMO

The first pastor my husband and I worked under was Rev. Gerald Perkins. A more loving pastor I never knew. I miss him often. He showed us with his own life, what it meant to be a servant.
I also have a dear friend in the ministry, who I've known since my teens. He's ministered to me more times than I can count. Everytime he has prayed for me he's spoke words from the Lord I needed at that moment.
My husband has a brain for study and has been a great help to me and my studies along the way.
My current Pastor, Raymond Woodward also has a lot of Biblical knowledge, and I learn something from him each time he preaches.

I've had the privilege of having some wonderful men of God as my pastors over the years. All 4 of them touched my life in their own unique ways with their own unique ministries.
Bro Paul Dennis was the first. He was tough. Expected alot. But I always knew that his reason for expecting so much was because of a deep, deep love and concern for our souls. Not to say I always agreed. And I certainly was not a model saint. But I will always appreciate his sincere love for the souls of those he pastors. We are still in contact and I consider it a huge privilege now to call him my friend. He is a fine, fine man.
Bro Roy Well was my next pastor. Again, no one could love souls like Bro Well. He was only my pastor a little over a year, but during that year, I learned one of the biggest things that has molded and shaped my life over the years. I learned the importance of prayer. Not just casual, quicky kinda prayers. I learned to get before God and worship and exalt Him. I learned to seek God when I needed answers. I learned that I can do NOTHING without consulting my God first of all.
Bro Harold Roberts was my next pastor. Under the other two pastors I guess I had been kinda coddled and spoiled. They both spent alot of time walking with me holding my hand and teaching me to step out. Bro Roberts gave me the gift of owning my own faith. He taught me that if I am going to be a Christian, I need to be able to stand regardless of who stands beside me or who doesn't. He taught me that I have to know how to make mature choices.
And finally, Bro William Schaffner was my last Apostolic pastor. From him and his wife, I learned the joy of walking together in fellowship and friendship.
I thank God for every one of the wonderful men who shaped and formed my life. Did I always agree with them? Nope. Do I even agree with them now? Nope. But that is ok. God is who I am following. None of them ever set themselves up as God. They all helped to show me the way to God.
*********
By the way, if you happen to know any of these fine men, please feel free to share with them what I had to say about them. They deserve to know that they are appreciated!!

There have been many pastors who have impacted my life in ways I cant even begin to express
I have to begin with Bro R.E Johnson... he was my first pastor well sorta but I was 2 when I came to his church. I was never close to him as I was still very young when he left our church but in his later years he became like a grandpa to me and I loved him and his entire family dearly.
John R Kershaw... Wow... not enough words to express how much I love "The Dad" He was my pastor from the time I was 4 and then well... it takes one wonderful family to after you have already raised your own children to turn around and take in 5 foster children who have been horribly abused and mistreated and raise them as your own... We love him for that so much! So many may not agree with where he stands standard wise today but one thing I know is he is the best pastor/mentor/papa we could have ever asked for. I remember him standing at my side at my sisters wedding and saying.. yall know this is the last wedding I am going to do.. I have married off all the kids that will ever get married now so I am done... he said... My only other desire is to see all of yalls kids filled with the holy ghost before I die... Well... I am calling him in the morning to ask him to come Sunday night to see the youngest of all our kids get baptized and then he will have got his wish... My sisters son is getting baptized Sun night and says he is getting the holy ghost then too ;) The years of ministry of this man and the years of a Godly life he has lived beyond the walls of the church building... make him someone I will forever love, adore and be honored to say I knew him and loved him dearly!
Bro Richard Elrod... Miss him dearly. He was a great pastor and friend..
Bro Richard Christian... It was a wild ride working with him but it was the biggest growing experience of our lives and we will forever be indebted to him for the learning and growing we experienced there! Our lives were forever touched..
Bro A B Keating. At a time where we needed a place of healing.. he was there and took us under his wing and cared like only God could place someone in our lives to do...
Pastor DG Hargrove.. Wow.. all I can say is we are blessed :)

Hey, now, those there preachers told me on the tele that if I would give my last $19.96 that I would reap a harvest! Of course, that was twelve years ago, but if Benny Hinn could describe what God was wearing to Jan Crouch then that was good enough for me. So, what if I only have two lent balls in my pockets today...I sowed my seed of faith so I can get me a 18,000 sq ft mansion in Beverly Hills, a brand new Bentley, a vacation home in Morrocco and a new 40 million dollar jet just like Benny, Kenneth and Creflo.
"Say after me, all of you, everybody say it, 'The wealth of the wicked is mine.' [The audience repeats.] One more time, (The audience repeats) One more time. (The audience repeats it again)" (Benny Hinn. Praise-a-Thon, TBN, April 1990) (Its an old practice that if you hear something said by your own voice long enough you will believe it).
"The Lord giveth and NEVER taketh away. And just because [Job] said, 'Blessed be the name of the Lord,' don't mean that he's right. When he said, 'Blessed be the name,' he was just being religious." (TBN, Nov., 1990).
I’m sick and tired of hearing about streets of gold. I don’t need gold in Heaven, I gotta have it now. I mean, when I get to glory, all my bills will be paid, brother. I won’t have bills in glory. I gotta have it here. You say, ‘Well, Benny Hinn, isn’t it woderful to have streets of gold i heaven?’ Well, of course, but if I hear the thing one more time of how it will be and how it was, I’m gonna kick somebody” (Benny Hinn, “Praise the Lord”. Nov 8th 1990. Audiotape.)

"If all you have is $79.36, I double-dare you to empty your bank account. Close your account." (TBN, Fall Praise-A-Thon, November 8, 2003)Juanita Bynum, TBN, Fall Praise-A-Thon, November 8, 2003) http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:vln1GmhN6QHLDM:http://www.ebonyjet.com/
"You’ve got three days to get that into your mailbox. I’m not afraid to say this. I am walking in my authority…if you don’t postmark it by the tenth, we will not accept it. God says you have three days to get your thousand-dollar seed in the mail." (TBN, Fall Praise-A-Thon, November 8, 2003)
"Give $10 and receive $1000; Give $1000 and receive $100,000 … give one house and receive one hundred houses or a house worth one hundred times as much. Give one airplane and receive one hundred times the value of the airplane. … In short, Mark 10:30 is a very good deal" (Gloria Copeland in her book God's Will Is Prosperity: p. 54).

"Your miracle is about to happen, not tomorrow, not next year, God is going to answer now! Your finances will be fixed now, your children and grandchildren will be saved, your sickness will be healed, now! God is going to add 15 years to someones life."

I appreciate Bishop Wright but I'm still working thru his works. I have some concerns so I have not made up my mind as of yet. He is extremely brilliant and very nuanced....possibly to his detriment.

Which of Wright's works have you read so far? Paul? Surprised by Hope? Justification? While I wrestled with his ideas, he helped bring peace to other areas of searching. He helped fit the pieces of the puzzle together while still leaving mystery... if that makes sense. I'll look into those authors you mentioned.
As far as theologians, are you a fan of Karl Barth?

Been working thru his massive apologetic on the historical Jesus, justification, and a few others.
Theologians? Calvin, Edwards, the already mentioned Bahnsen, Van Til, and John Frame have been essential in my thought.
