View Full Version : Urgent Prayer Request.
Tiffany Posted this on Just Preachers for me.
I wanted to bring it here as well.
Dan and I are having a very difficult day.
Last night we got word that out church Bass player was in Baton Rouge, La and was lost down town.
As he was on the phone with his wife trying to figure out where he was....a man walked up to the car and shot him point blank in the abdomen.
When Dan went to bed last night all we knew was that he was in surgery.
This morning Dan got a phone call letting him know that Brent had died from the gunshot and the family wanted our services.
He and Dan were friends, Dan played the drums and Brent the bass.
Brent was 38 and leaves behind a wife (Chandlers Sunday School Teacher), and two sons 12 and 9.
Please remember the Cole Family in prayer and also for Dan. He is a very passionate about helping folks on the level of funeral service, but this one hits very close to home.
Thanks,
I know he will appreciate this.

Dear Lord,
Give your comfort and grace to this family. I can't imagine, but I know a friend I grew up with who can relate...Gail George. Lord, give special blessings to this wife and children and let them know you care and others hurt with them.
Jehoveh Shalom...bring peace in the midst of this tragedy.

This is so very tragic and sad. This sounds like such a senseless act of random violence. I will be praying for your family, the victim's family and your church family. I know there are no words that can mean much now, but I will pray for you.

Prayer was requested for this family in church this morning. There was nothing in the newspaper this morning. It was my understanding that Brent was coming to BR to play for the BR church. I am so sorry for this family. What a senseless tragedy.

Dan,
How senseless this was. I was sickened by the news. Spoke to Sis. Hennigan this morning and she relayed the news, she was noticeably and understandably shaken by it. We are in prayer for the entire church family as well as the Cole family. Brent was one of the best bass players I have ever heard. Played for Allstate back in the day...so sad!

Great Lord God, Comforter and Peace Speaker,
We come humbly yet boldly, to Your Throne of Grace and ask for
peace and comfort for the family of this dear man. And mercy for the
one who committed this crime. Lord, we ask that somehow some good
would come out of this tragedy, for You know how to turn that which
the enemy meant for evil, and You can mean for good, in JESUS NAME!!
We trust You, Lord! Thank You for Who You are!

"these men" when asking if anyone saw anything... was there more than Brent who were shot? Or was that just a case of the newscasters miswording??? I am sorry Sis I didnt think I said anything to lessen this I sure didnt mean to ... I sure agree this is very sad and sick indeed!

Dan,
I know that this will be a very difficult situation for you. I will hold you up in my prayers.
The Body of Christ has taken two reverberating blows this weekend. My prayers are with these that God sends peace and comfort for these affected by tragedy. We need to hold these brethren up in such difficult times.
John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

This incident has really upset me. I am praying for the family and friends and the BR church. God is able to bring comfort and peace to them. Tiff and Dan it is wonderful that you are allowing God to use you to be a blessing to this family in their time of sorrow. I know this must be hard for you both.
I am spitting mad about the coverage this crime is getting in the BR press. It is covered as an after thought and just another killing!!! A shooting at a party and the killing of a recently release felon is getting way more coverage. I am trying not go off the "deep end" so to speak and start writing letters to the newspaper and TV stations. OK I guess I am just venting- thanks AFF for letting.

DeQuincy Man Gunned Down in Baton Rouge
By all accounts 39-year-old Brent Cole was a talented musician, splitting his weekends as bass player at his church in DeQuincy and a church in Baton Rouge.
"He was there for this particular weekend and happened to go down the wrong road," said Reverend David Hennigan.
Baton Rouge Police say Brent was on the phone with his wife Saturday night trying to get better directions to his hotel after getting lost. That's when someone started shooting at his car. The gunman eventually caught up with him, firing several shots into his vehicle killing him.
"Words just describe what we felt," said Hennigan.
Hennigan pastored Brent since he was thirteen and watched him grow up at the Pentecostal Church of DeQuincy. He's says Brent's death is like losing one of his own.
"They've taken away one of the favorite sons of this town and of course one of the favorite sons of this church," said Rev. Hennigan.
A loving husband and father of two young boys, Brent managed one of the supermarkets in DeQuincy for the past 18-years, always greeting customers with a friendly smile.
"His nickname in DeQuincy among all of his peers was 'Smiley.' And then he also has another nickname among the people he works with And they call him happy feet because when he spoke he would kind of move from one foot to the other and shift his weight and smile," said Hennigan.
But smiles were harder to come by today as Brent's church family searches for answers. Meanwhile, as authorities follow leads into his tragic death they believe God knows best.
"He sees the end from the beginning and God's perspective is so much better than ours and we just trust the Lord God knows so much more than we do... His way is higher than ours," said Hennigan.
At this time authorities have no suspects in the case. Brent leaves behind a loving wife and two small boys. To help the family with funeral expenses an account has been set up at the City Savings Bank and Trust in DeQuincy. If you would like to donate you can ask for the "Brent Cole Memorial Fund."
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Christensen Funeral Home in DeQuincy. Visitation is Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Pentecostal Church and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. followed by the funeral at one.

Why did it take three months to trace the cell phone?
This killing reminds me of the murder of two men in Garland, TX this week, what is it with two young black men killing unarmed, non-threatening white men????

A man booked in the murder of a church musician posted a $100,000 bond and was released from Parish Prison on Friday while a second man booked in the killing remains in custody.
The bond on the second man is $250,000. Different judges set the bonds for Michael Smith Jr., who remains in custody, and James G. Barrow, the son of State Rep. Regina A. Barrow, D-Baton Rouge.
At the request of Barrow’s father and grandmothers, state District Judge Janice Clark, who primarily handles a civil docket, set Barrow’s bond, court records provided by the judge show.
Clark said she considers Barrow to be a minimal flight risk, according to court records.
State Rep. Regina Barrow says in a statement released Friday that her family is “convinced of (Barrow’s) innocence” but could not comment about the specifics of the case.
“At one time or another, every family encounters a stormy season. Sadly, our family is currently encountering one of those seasons,” the statement says.
“I, my husband, and entire family would like to extend our deepest sympathy and most heartfelt prayers to the family and friends of Brent Cole,” the statement says.
Commissioner John Smart and state District Judge Todd Hernandez set Smith’s bond, said Tracey Barbera, first assistant district attorney.
Hernandez was the judge on criminal court duty at the time of Barrow and Smith’s bookings.
Although any judge can set a bond, Hernandez said Friday, normally the duty judge handles it. If another judge wants to step in, they usually contact the judge who is on duty, he added.
Hernandez said he did not know Barrow and Smith had been booked until Friday morning when a staff member told him Barrow’s bond had been set.
Clark did not respond to a message left at her office late Friday asking why she did not contact Hernandez before setting Barrow’s bond. Before the message was left, Clark provided The Advocate with a copy of the court order that fixed Barrow’s bond.
In addition to posting bond, Clark also ordered that he remain on house arrest via a Street Crimes Alternatives tracking device. He must also submit to random drug and alcohol tests, and hold a full-time job or enroll in school.
The house arrest would allow Barrow to go to school or work, the order says. Both the service for the house arrest, and the drug and alcohol tests will be paid for by Barrow.
Tony Lawrence, Smith’s attorney, said in a Friday telephone interview he plans to request a bond reduction hearing.
“He doesn’t have that kind of money,” Lawrence said of Smith’s $250,000 bond. “Very few people do.”
Barrow, 21, 6512 Vineyard Drive, and Smith, 20, 2882 Saratoga Drive, surrendered to authorities Thursday in the shooting death of Cole, police have said.
Cole, a 39-year-old DeQuincy man who traveled to Baton Rouge to play bass guitar at First Pentecostal Church, was shot at and chased on March 15 while driving along Goodwood and Independence boulevards, police have said.
He was found fatally injured in his car on Goodwood Boulevard at Lobdell Avenue.
Police spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said Thursday police do not believe Cole knew Barrow and Smith. The shooting, McKneely said, might have been the result of road rage.
Barrow and Smith were booked on one count each of principal to second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon after police traced calls made to and from a cell phone found at the crime scene.
The men were not booked on second-degree murder because police do not know who pulled the trigger, McNeely said. However, Smith and Barrow still face mandatory life sentences if convicted of principal to second-degree murder.
Barrow and Smith have been in trouble with the law before, according to East Baton Rouge Parish court records.
Before his most recent arrest, Barrow was due in court on July 23 on a charge of simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling, court records say.
Barrow was arrested last year for allegedly beating a man with a baseball bat, pointing a gun at the man and telling him to get in the trunk of a car, arrest warrant say.
Smith was arrested in the same incident for allegedly luring the man to his house. A warrant says Smith told the man he wanted to buy some stereo equipment from him.
Smith was booked on a count each of principal to aggravated battery and principal to second-degree kidnapping, the warrants say.
Barrow was booked on one count each of aggravated battery, attempted second-degree kidnapping and theft of a firearm.
Clark’s name appears on two orders to fix an appearance bond for Barrow in that incident.
Smith also has been convicted of a misdemeanor drug charge and has been arrested on a count of possession of marijuana and a count of possessing a firearm with a controlled dangerous substance, court records say.
Barrow is due in court Tuesday to determine whether his appearance bond should be modified in the case regarding Cole’s murder.
Advocate staff writer Koran Addo contributed to this report.
This is good news that they caught these guys before they murder any more people.
This case reminded me of one here in Nashivlle a couple of years ago when a young man who had recently moved here was driving his mother around when she came to visit and he got lost and drove into the wrong part of town. For absolutely no reason other tha nthe color of his skin he was shot to death in front of his mother when he stopped and asked for directions.
