San Juan nuclear submarine in false alarm drama
March 14, 2007
Washington, D.C. - A false alarm led the Pentagon overnight to scramble to save a nuclear-powered submarine that U.S. Navy officials feared was lying helpless on the ocean floor off Jacksonville, Fla.

"There were a number of events that led us to believe we had a submarine in distress," said Navy spokesman Phil McGuinn. He said communication was lost with the vessel, and Navy ships reported having seen a red flare in the area.

President Bush, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Peter Pace were alerted, and top military leaders hustled into the Pentagon overnight to oversee a search-and-rescue plan for the vessel and its 140 officers and crew members, whose families were alerted of the possible tragedy.

But all fears were put to rest several hours later, when contact was re-established with the sub, whose officers told officials they had never been in peril and had had no idea of the hullabaloo that had been raised on their behalf.

Naval authorities said Wednesday they were trying to determine why communication was lost with the San Juan, whose captain is Comdr. Michael Martin, a 24-year Navy veteran.

What do you make of this???

If I understood them correctly it was for quite some time. It is scary when you know it was a nuclear sub.

Not if you know anything about subs. "lost communication" is a misnomer.

Subs go dark according to orders. I suspect that they were running typical ops in the atlantic doing what they were supposed to do but some duty officer had a different set of orders he was looking at on the Base.

that guy thought they were supposed to make contact and they didnt. proper alarms were sent out, and proceedures were followed, then all the sudden the San Juan popped up when their orders said to and poof, there goes the drill.

My brother was on a Frigate (USS Fanning)

He said one night a guy was on deck and the moon was flickering on the water below. My brother told him that what he was seeing was a submarine signalling the ship. He believed it.

Now THAT... is scary. :)

There are no end of scary stories about some of the sailors I have known.

some of the brightest people I have had the honor of serving with were enlisted men in the Navy. Some of the people I served with were dumber than a box of rocks (and that is a quote).

The rocks mention reminds me of one time my brother apparently earned the ire of a young lady in the area they were stationed.

She looked at him and said.... "eat rocks"

He said... Man... eat rocks... now that's harsh.

BTW just because I think Essias is a conspiracy nut does in no way mean I don't believe there are conspiracies :-)

Just kidding. I don't think he is a nut. He does seem to have a penchant for these conspiracies. I try to take them with a grain of salt. I don't doubt there are conspiracies but not everything is a conspiracy or nor is the right person being identified in the conspiracy. For example...a bunch of Muslims doing 9/11 IS a conspiracy. They conspired to do it. They need not have the US government involved.

On the other hand a US conspiracy of 9/11 need not involved remote controlled Jetliners either. It could be they knew of the plot and did nothing to stop it. I notice conspiracy folks seem to go to extremes when in reality conspiracies are more subtle and less obvious

Prax, CC1, and the FOOD POPE!

we think a lot alike on these things.
