Ezekiel 16:1 - 14 (KJV)
1 Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 2 Son of man, cause Jerusalem to know her abominations, 3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto Jerusalem; Thy birth and thy nativity is of the land of Canaan; thy father was an Amorite, and thy mother an Hittite. 4 And as for thy nativity, in the day thou wast born thy navel was not cut, neither wast thou washed in water to supple thee; thou wast not salted at all, nor swaddled at all. 5 None eye pitied thee, to do any of these unto thee, to have compassion upon thee; but thou wast cast out in the open field, to the lothing of thy person, in the day that thou wast born.

6 And when I passed by thee, and saw thee polluted in thine own blood, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live; yea, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live. 7 I have caused thee to multiply as the bud of the field, and thou hast increased and waxen great, and thou art come to excellent ornaments: thy breasts are fashioned, and thine hair is grown, whereas thou wast naked and bare. 8 Now when I passed by thee, and looked upon thee, behold, thy time was the time of love; and I spread my skirt over thee, and covered thy nakedness: yea, I sware unto thee, and entered into a covenant with thee, saith the Lord GOD, and thou becamest mine. 9 Then washed I thee with water; yea, I thoroughly washed away thy blood from thee, and I anointed thee with oil. 10 I clothed thee also with broidered work, and shod thee with badgers’ skin, and I girded thee about with fine linen, and I covered thee with silk. 11 I decked thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain on thy neck. 12 And I put a jewel on thy forehead, and earrings in thine ears, and a beautiful crown upon thine head. 13 Thus wast thou decked with gold and silver; and thy raiment was of fine linen, and silk, and broidered work; thou didst eat fine flour, and honey, and oil: and thou wast exceeding beautiful, and thoudidst prosper into a kingdom. 14 And thy renown went forth among the heathen for thy beauty: for it was perfect through my comeliness, which I had put upon thee, saith the Lord GOD.

If it's literal then God himself provided the jewelry and sure would cause a problem for the teaching today, IMO.

If it's symbolic, then why would God use sinful adornments to describe the glories of his people?? Even the church is spoken as a bride adorned for husband.

Isa 61:10

10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
KJV

Jer 2:32

32 Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.
KJV

Why would he compare ropes of righteousness to a bridegroom with ornaments and bride her jewels, if so sinful?

for the record, I'm a no jewelry man, not even a wrist ring that tells time, but I don't know how to explain why God himself says he decked the saints with jewelry and such......

Scriptures like that always bothered me, but somehow they were just ignored. I think God likes to adorn His children with gifts, and I don't think He would have used these symbolisms if He considered jewelry sinful.

P.S. I like jewelry, just not excess.:bliss

Great points. I never bought the reasons for not wearing jewelry. I was taught that is identifying with the world or even worse Jezabel. Personally the story of jez was more about the lifestyle of killing the men of God and not so much the ornaments she wore. I do believe there was a reason the Bible mentioned she wore jewelry. Maybe it was as simple as she was wealthy. I have also heard jewelry preached against because of the idol that Aaron made. Both examples are not Biblically correct, IMO.

yeah, I haven't seen to much input on this from the no jewelry side. I wear none and have desire to but wonder why God would use sinful things to describe righteous things.

But God has doen thing in the OT that are hard to understand such as why God tell Hosea to mary a prostitue. Used Rahab the harlot, multiple wives and so on...

Obviously, we should marry a prostitute, use a harlot, or have mutliple wives now and that's what some have used to explain ezekial 16. Makes sense?

As far as the Hosea and the prostitute thing. Was she a literal prostitute when he married her or was that a symbolic term and then she later actually became a prostitute?

As far as the jewelry thing, in my opinion, God had and has nothing against jewelry. That's just something that bothers some "holiness" preachers. Abraham sent along a nose ring and bracelets to be given to the future bride of his son, Isaac. Evidently the women in Abraham's family wore jewelry. It was not an issue.

Some believe that jewelry was OK in the Old Testament but that it's wrong in the New Testament. In other words, God allowed it back then but then when He saw how people reacted with it and how it got out of hand, He now says it is wrong.

In my opinion, jewelry is not an issue. If a person wants to wear ornaments on their body or in their body (like piercings), on their ears, fingers, wrists, around the neck (like a cloth necklace or necktie) that is completely between them and God and is none of my business.

Interesting points.

I'd be interested in hearing comments from the "no-jewelry" hardliners regarding these scripture verses.

I have a friend that when she first visited a pentecostal church she wore a necklace. she was in the back praying and seeking for the HolyGhost when this certifiable...I mean um "WELLMEANING" saint "cough cough" came back where she was and tried to literally snatch it off her neck saying something like the spirit on the necklace was choking her. glad she left and went somewhere else and still got in church. i would have been like u think this necklace is choking u just wait till i start doing it.loj

I agree. A ring was also one of the first things that the Prodigal put on his son when he returned home. There is a symbol of family and love/position if you would in the ring.
