Well we picked beans and pulled green onions from our gardens yesterday afternoon. We will be digging red potatoes up soon. I can hardly wait for the tomatoes to be ready to pick.......YUMMY!!!!!
Canning and freezing will be happening soon. We have nearly 2 acres of gardens. We are so blessed. I gotta get pics of the grandsons farming with their papa. So cute.

Yummy!!! My grandparents and mom/stepdad always had huge gardens too. They were able to feed the church and retired folks around them (and me too).

My garden isn't very big, but I have already picked a bunch of peppers. My tomatoe plants are so loaded right now. I am just waiting for them to get ripe for the picking.

My squach and zucchini are doing really well...lots of blooms.

Yum! I was going to plant tomatoes and cucumbers this year, but I haven't got around to it yet, I am wondering if it is too late?

We planted a small garden at our home in Arkansas (36' x 36')

I am only able to get up there on weekends right now. This past weekend we had our first dozen squash start growing. They are about 3-4" long. Maybe next weekend when my parents come see the house for the first time we will be able to pick and eat some fresh squash.

Right now I am having problems with deer eating my purple hull peas....

If you were planning on planting small scale you might do a search on upside down gardening.

Tomatoes and cucumbers both lend themselves to upside down gardening and it seems like it would be much easier if one were just raising a few plants.

I had actually seen that mentioned on another thread, and since that is exactly what I would be doing (small scale) it is very interesting.

I have a very small area to plant in, and I haven't done it in a few years because I had planted back there for a couple of years and it totally took over and was unmanageable. I think I may have waited too long this year though.

You'll get something out of it... not as much as you would have... but it is a fun thing to do.

Run some heavy string or cord of some type around your garden and tie Plastic grocery bags and aluminum pie pans to it. It will make you look like a redneck... but the end result will be the wind will rattle the bags & pans-- and scare the critters away from your garden.

I'm wishing that I hadn't planted one! I'd have been better off if I'd just put aside the money to go stock up on stuff at the farmers markets.

My husband got hurt at work, and has just been scheduled for 8 weeks of physical therapy-- and put on light duty for his job. For me, this translates no help from him with the yard work or mowing till released by the doctor. I might as well mow the garden now, because I know my kids aren't going to be willing help to do the gardening. I can't see my two teenagers being happy or excited about it tomorrow when I wake them up at about 6am so that we can get the gardening done before it gets hot out there. :D

At least we only have to hoe the grass in between and around the plants. In the middles of the rows, I'm soaking an industrial size cotton mop with round up and dragging it in between the rows to reduce the amount of grass we have to hoe.

Wow really? Our 14 yr. old granddaughter loves to garden as do the younger grandchildren and our adult children help their Dad a lot. We give a way a lot of produce at church and sometimes to co-workers of my husband. We have a couple of our children and other relatives living next door and at the end of the north pasture so we feed a lot of people out of our garden. We also raise chickens for fresh eggs.

We sometimes told our kids when they were growing up, if you don't work in the garden you don't eat any of it.......lol
Our oldest daughter loved to get a tomato off the vine and eat it, most of our kids like coming down to help out when they can.

Wow Cindy you have a huge garden! Way to go!!!

I have blooms on my squash, tomatoes, and bell peppers. Other than that everything is in slow mode.

My neighbors looks a lot better than mine. The soil here is horrible!!!

My fig trees are now putting on leaves and one of my pecan trees. Of course, it will be years before I see any fruit from them. :)

Wish I could have found figs this year, but no luck!

Our fig tree produces very little, the rest of our fruit trees do very well. Apple, peach, pear, we just seem to have great soil here. I am hoping we get some good berries this year. We also have some wild berries, and plums on our property. I love plum jelly. What part of the state are you in now?

Oh I've seen a number of uh, unique designs with corn. People do all kinds of weird stuff, and it seems the further away for the cities the more prevelent it is. I've seen some stuff that you wouldn't be able to see from a car, but only a tall vehicle or by air. You really have to wander what is going through peoples minds....

Corn will burn up quick in the Texas heat if you are not careful. And needs more rain than we sometimes get here. Texas is still considered in drought conditions.

Funny you should mention weed growing I assume marijuana. One of our neighbors years ago grew weed in their garden along with a few other food plants, I guess hoping to disguise it. The gardens sounds great. Our soil is crummy and my luck growing vegetables was a waste. So I try to go to the farmers market later in the summer.
But I do love my flowers, I spent time outdoors today putting my bedding plants in hanging planters that line the front porch. I also have a few large planters on the porch and bordering the front walkway. I always plant geraniums cuz they're "tough"! Bloom all summer and they can take the heat!

Then I get adventurous and see what's new or on special. I planted a couple clearance dwarf rose bushes in the corner of the yard near the driveway; time will tell.....the leaves look healthy but the flowers have died; who can resist $1 a planter ??

My fingernails are lined with dirt, maybe it's a look that will catch on? :girlnails
I can't work well wearing gardening gloves.

Perhaps a patio tomato plant would survive?

It was really funny since I knew before hand it was gonna happen, just not really sure what time. And of all things it was on a Friday night here in Texas, and of course Friday night high school football time. There were cops everywhere. It happened right down the street from our house. What is really stupid is they had people driving up to buy and the people that lived there had to have seen the cops but just drove right up into their driveway, so funny. And they even had some growing in their bedroom, and the lady told the cops she didn't know it was there.........LOL One of her kids had been staying with us because he didn't want to go to jail. He and one of his friends turned them in.

I'll be happy to as soon as I figure out the BEST way to do it! I tried deep frying spinach last weekend and mine wasn't as good as the Sunflower Bistro in Brookfield, IL. LOL IMAGINE THAT!

I think we have to deep fry them in peanut oil because even canola oil made the spinach leaves....heavy. Anyway, I'll get the "filling" recipe from my cousin. We are going to use the same recipe she uses for pepper poppers.

From what I understand you just GENTLY rinse and dry the blossoms, use a disposable bag to fill them and then pinch the ends together and deep fry. I guess if you wanted to add that SOUTHERN touch you could roll them in flower or cornmeal.

I'll let you know how they turn out!

My favorite summer meal is: Fried yellow squash, fried green tomatoes, fresh corn on the cob, fresh green beans, new potatoes and cornbread. Now I also need some fresh ripe tomatoes as well. When my Memaw Carrie was alive she would fry sweet potatoes in butter and sugar just for ME! THAT is my favorite meal!

We picked some squash, cucumbers, and onions today. Yummy fried squash. Oh I almost forgot more jalapenos and banana peppers too. I can't wait for some fresh tomatoes, and I love tomato sandwiches.

If you have squash blossoms you need to try the deep fried squash blossoms! I'm still lookin' for them in Kentucky! My stepdad doesn't have any yet and neither does my auntie!

We do have some squash blossoms, we did pick a couple of bell peppers today. I am thinking about trying a veggie pizza. What kind of batter do you use for the squash blossoms? Our new fig tree is getting huge and has lots of little figs growing, and our peach trees are doin great, saw a lot of peaches.

The other day while out in the garden, I noticed that I had planted a couple of cucumber plants without even knowing it!!! They were mixed in with my squash and zucchini and the best I could guess was that they somehow were placed with the squash or zucchini plants while at Lowe's. I was pleasantly surprised because I do love fresh cucumbers.

I have several cucumbers on the vine and one of them was at least seven inches long. lol

I have around a dozen or so tomatoes that have ripened and are ready to be picked this morning.

I see a BLT in my not so distant future...yum!
