Johnson, James B.
MARION - The Rev. James B. Johnson, 84, passed away at 5:17 p.m. Monday, May 19, 2008, at Fountains Nursing Care Center.
The Rev. Johnson was born Oct. 30, 1923, in Carseesco, Miss., the son of Robert R. and Omelia (Burgess) Johnson.
He married Mimoth L. Strunk on Aug. 18, 1943, in San Francisco, Calif., and together they shared more than 64 years of marriage.
The Rev. Johnson had served as a Pentecostal minister for over 58 years. He started pastoring in Hamburg, Ark., and was there for 6 years. In 1957, he went to Bethel Temple in Belleville for 1 years. From there, he went to West Frankfort until 1964, from 1964 to 1968 in Galesburg and in Herrin from 1968 to 1979. After that, he evangelized for three years, moving to Bastrop, La., to Tallulah United Pentecostal Church until November 1997, and then they moved back to Marion to complete his career. He was a member of Johnston City United Pentecostal Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mimoth Johnson of Marion; daughter, Joann Bailey and husband, Robert, of Rockford; son, James W. Johnson and wife, Ester, of Herrin; three grandsons, Robert Bailey of Phoenix, Anthony Bailey of Rockford and James Johnson Jr. of Herrin; and sister, Mattie Murray of Carbondale.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joseph and Frank Johnson; and two sisters, Mary Toney and Rosie Lee Jeffers.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 22, 2008, in Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Michael Glasco and the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to First United Pentecostal Church in Johnston City.
