California court has agreed to rehear the case after initially stripping away parental rights.
Focus on the Family and the Home School Legal Defense Association filed a joint brief with the 2nd District Court of Appeal in Los Angeles this week, highlighting the success of home schooling.
The court agreed to rehear the case after ruling in February that parents without teaching credentials do not have a right to home-school their children. The brief points out there is no evidence that teacher certification is necessary to academic success in home schooling
Candi Cushman, education analyst at Focus on the Family Action, said opponents of home schooling treat it "like it’s this dangerous trend that needs to be vigorously regulated by the government, and that’s just not the case.
“The truth is the data show that licensing really doesn’t make a significant difference in the achievement of these children. Home-schoolers across the nation are already performing, on average, 15 to 30 percentage points above others kids on achievement tests.”
