I was reading in II Samuel today and a passage of scripture stuck out to me. God held back some of his blessings for Israel because of how Saul treated the Gibeonites. David was then king and had been king for some time, yet God was still holding Israel responsible for what its previous leader had done.

Do you believe God still treats the church this way? If so, what are some of the sins that are previous leaders have done? In other words, is there something in our past heritage that presently keeps us from something that God might have for us?

I am not sure, I thought at one time that it meant in families the sins of the fathers were visited on the sons. Even if you had been forgiven your sons could still suffer the consequences of your sins.

I never really thought about in terms of the church. If for example, a leader had misused church funds, that would have far reaching consequences. Even beyond the actual deed, there are the facts of having to forgive and learn to trust again. So yes, I guess it can be that way in the church. Sad to think about it isn't it?

Yes, this is indeed what the scriptures were talking about. But in families as well as churches it would stand to reason that if the previous church leadership had issues in a certain area that the next leadership would be under scrutiny for much the same reasons even if they were not guilty of such. It is the nature of people.

A church we assumed pastorate of had been financially taken advantage of by the previous pastor. Before they would allow us to Pastor after having received much more than 2/3 majority was contingent on us signing a contract to only take a % of the tithe and in the contract was a benefit package.

Every penny we spent on literature, paper clips [you'd freak over the stories I could tell you], and any time we took a benefit they would say we should have done this, or that even to fussing about the electric bill. It was a horrible experience. We paid for all the issues of the previous pastor.

On another note: there was sin in the church that had not been dealt with regarding molestation and incest, and the previous pastor kept the board member in a position to do his bidding in order to keep the family secret. It hit home and we had to deal with it when the board member was arrested for molesting children on a public school bus.

So, do churches inherit the sins of the previous leadership...absolutely.

Just being honest,
