View Full Version : The Structures of Freedom - Sermon by Dan Scott
Regardless of what stripe of Pentecostal you are I strongly urge you to watch or listen to this past Sunday's sermon titled "Structures of Freedom" by Christ Church Nashivlle pastor Dan Scott.
It is not a doctrinal message in the sense that there should be nothing to offend the most conservative to the most liberal Pentecostal / Apostolic but there is tremendous truth spoken regarding the origins of our great Country.
Dan said that he normally would not devote an entire sermon to government and has not in the past but could not get away from it when preparing for service yesterday, the Sunday before July 4th.
I was at the early service and the webcast / podcast typically is of the 2nd service but it should be the same sermon.
I would urge you to take the time to listen or watch and once you do you probably will want your kids to do the same if they are old enough to understand the subject.
I am pasting a link to the sermon page at the Christ Church Website. It is the June 29 service.

*BUMP*
LOL!!! I knew ths was the worst title for a thread I believe I have ever seen but it was the name of the sermon I thought was one every American should hear so I went with it.
Now I wish I had spent a few minutes come up with some catchy title since only a few people have read the thread and zero responded.
Of course I know when I read a thread like this I usually don't respond until I have a chance to check the thing out someone is recommending and that can take days.
Who knows, someone might actually watch or listen to the sermon at some point!

Excellent! Thanks for sharing it, CC1!
I like his emphasis on [church] community, and even pointing out the positive aspects of church culture.

Wow, thanks CC1, now I can have church every morning at the gym!!
You can't imagine how excited I am about the podcasts of these sermons, those CDs you sent are well worn!!
I know others will hate the fact that CC represents "church" to me but oh well...let them send me a link for THEIR podcasts...
:D
Crackerjack - You inspired me to enjoy the music again myself!
Miss Brattfiedl - Thanks! You get the award for the first person to comment on my sig line. I just knew I was going to get an earful both good and bad but not one single solitary soul had said anything publicly or privately until your post. I have a twisted sense of humor so found that exchange particularly funny.
Carp - You are a bad, bad man! I really need a good MP3 player myself. I bought a cheapo chinese one last year and used it a little. Then I loaded it up with old time radio shows, sermons, Lake Wobegone, etc for my flight to Hawaii and five nights at sea only to have it decide not to work Arghhhh!!!!!!! I would also like to be able to hear podcasts. Of course it wouldn't be at a gym, LOL!!!

That sig line is awesome!!! I can imagine Dan Scott preparing a message about it...can you imagine showing that clip during the reading of the text?
I could dig it!!!!!

You should see the costumes the puritans were wearing. I ran across the DVD of this episode that I had recorded off of TV a few years ago when I was cleaning out my garage a couple of days ago. I watched it that night and laughed all over again.

It is one of those things where you laugh until you cry because you remember getting slapped for having the chair.

Yup. The best humor is grounded in reality!
It is all good though. As long as you remember that if you do have two chairs to stick that fork in your leg between courses to make up for it.:toofunny

CC1, enjoyed his sermon. Now of coarse the puritans were not as dour as your signature line states. It's sad. I went to Christ College at Cambridge and that was once called the "nursery of the puritans" and their memory is ridiculed to this day.
But saying this, I enjoyed Pastor Scott's sermon.
Reformed Dave,
Thanks for checking it out!
Carp,
Here is a link to a pic of the female puritan from my sig line. Sadly the giant cross on top of her head is barely in the picture. Check out her "necklace"!

Yup! Dawn French. It was a cute show. I particularly liked the old guy on the village council who would answer everything "no,no,no,no,no,no.....yes!".
The other best part was at the end of the show when Dawn French as the female pastor would tell jokes to the dumb blonde in the church. LOL!!!

I would say about this sermon the same thing Bro. David Gray said about Lee Stonekings oneness message, This ought to be preached in every church throughout the nation.

Probably my favorite sitcom. I love the British. They are NOT PC in the least. My poor wife just doesn't get it.........:reaction

My favorite British sitcom of all time is Fawlty Towers. Done in the early 1970's and still as funny as ever.
More recently "Keeping Up Appearances" was a favorite.
Thank for reccomending the sermon CC1 but I've been watching the services for a while now and just recently got my sister watching them too. Actually the first srvice she watched was the week before that. Her comment about the choir was "Awesome".

tssp,
Cool. One thing that I have really appreciated about the CC choir is that they enunciate the words very clearly. In nine years of being here I can only think of maybe once or twice I had trouble understanding the words they were singing. Of course the recorded audio streamed is not as good as the house sound when you are there.
I wish they would stream the Wednesday night class that Dan teaches even if it was just with one camera.
I havent gotten to the sermon yet. music is awesome. Choir is outstanding, but can you get that hippie off the piano?

LOL! I am sure he is.
Once as a teenager, my hair got a bit long. I walked in the house and my dad was sitting reading the news paper. without looking up and in a very calm voice, he said, "Son if you dont cut that hair off im going to whip it off with a wet rope."
I got a haircut. It has shaped my view of such. Mr. Stone needs a haircut. artists dont get a pass.

We get together and golf about once a month. One time Regi forgot his hat and his hair kept getting in his face. . I told him he either needed to get a hat or a haircut! :D
He owns a popular recording studio and publishing company in Nashville which caters a lot to Christian rock/pop groups. I guess he's trying to look the part! :)

I listened and downloaded a few other sermons and services and I though it was interesting how Dan Scott made reference to Brother Stairs passing and Brother Hardwick spending time with Brother Gurley.
Very few if any realize who those people are in CC right?
CC, just curious, Dan Scott's dad was a missionary to Mexico correct? I believe my FIL is/was friends with him. Is elder Scott still alive? Does anyone else on here know?

I believe they were Missionaries to South America.

I believe Dan's dad was a missionary to either Peru or someplace like that. Dan has spent right at half his life living overseas as either a missionary kid or a missionary himself.
Is father is still alive and I believe still a UPC pastor.
The last I heard, Dan's folks were in Missouri but that could've changed.
Dan's dad did some geneology research for an aunt and uncle of mine and my great-great-grandfather was married to a relative of theirs. The reason I bring that up is because her name was a very appropriate name for the 4th of July. Her name was AMERICA.:happy4th

I had never heard "Shackles Off My Feet" sang with absolutely no soul before, but apparently there were many who liked the vanilla version of that song. :lol I don't mean to sound critical, so forgive me. The music and sermon felt dry and lacked the power and demonstration I have grown accustomed to in more "traditional" Pentecostal churches.
Dan Scott did have some good points and shared some interesting historical facts about our country.

One man's treasure........
One of the great things about America and it's traditions is that being a free country you don't have to attend, listen to, or watch a church that doesn't shockamoo up to your standard. Sorry you didn't like it but this choir and church have been a tremendous blessing to me. My expectations are different than yours apparently though. I don't have to have a choir jukin and jiving (although it is fun to watch) to feel the presence of God in a song.
Nor do I have to have a preacher screaming at me with "holy breath" to be impacted by a sermon.
