Hannah caught a perch in our creek last night, and when she tossed it back in, this big bullfrog grabbed it and had it for dinner!!!!!

Actually, there is a cotton mouth (so far we've only seen one) that lives in our creek. I don't know what to do about it. I do make the kids wear boots.

Well, I've only seen it IN the water...or on the other side of the creek. If it would come out on our side, I'd go after it with the shovel. Are there other options I don't know about? :coffee2

We have our own personal science lab--10 acres worth! Marsh, creek, grassland, pecan trees, a couple of evergreens, various annuals and perennials, native plants growing wild, a good population of hummingbirds, woodpeckers, etc. Frogs...fish...snakes...lizards...turtles!
Hey...speaking of more frogs...the other day I was watering plants in the front of the house, and there was a little frog sitting on top of one of our shutters--I looked down the line of the house, and there was a frog on EVERY shutter! :D Must be a prime spot for bug catching.
I also caught a tiny little tree frog--the bright green kind--and I wondered when I picked him up if he was poisoning my skin...LOL...I could almost feel my hand going numb for a second--but nothing terrible happened. :)

Unless you've recently moved to the Amazon, you might not have too much to worry about in terms of deadly frogs...lol

Abigail you are reminding me of the Crocodile Hunter. lol
When we come home from church we have the little green frogs everywhere. My husband will stop and count them. lol I'm like, "Good grief, open the door, I don't care!" lol
We used to live on 90 acres when the kids were growing up. Lots of stuff to explore, cattle to chase, rabbits, squirrels, etc. It was a lease to own and after the five years we decided we didn't want it. Now we are on one acre, which seems even big to me.
We had a chicken coop with laying hens and a rooster my husband wanted to have! I told him that if it ever attacked my children I would shoot it. We did get rid of it because it was very aggressive. They loved the glass eggs we put in the hen house to capture Chicken Snakes. We caught one that was 8' long! Course you have to cut it open to retrieve the egg - Biology 101! lol
They raised rabbits for 4-H. Raised a goat, but sold it after it jumped on my car. lol
Nursed a raccoon baby, watched baby chickens hatch, captured frogs, killed snakes, lots of fun!
I'm glad you have this for your children. I grew up in a fairly small town and hit the city when I graduated. I can live in both places, but one thing I know - you can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl! :gaga

I was attacked (spurred?) by a rooster when I was 4 or 5--and I remember it VIVIDLY!!!! It HURT!!! And I remember my Dad whipping off his belt and chasing it across the yard, beating it as he went. LOL!!!!!
I've never heard of the glass eggs...that's pretty neat...I think I could cut open a snake, if I was wearing plastic gloves and a mask. Then again, I killed a little snake on our back patio last month, and when I was trying to dispose of it, I dropped it, and nearly had a conniption when it touched my skin on its way to the ground. :D

That is so great! Country living is perfect for kids. However, I have a feeling that by the time they're in college, I'm going to be ready to move into a smaller house with a smaller yard, hire a landscaper to do all the yard work, and have 1 small, fairly maintenance free lap dog.
I'm exhausted today! I've just spent the afternoon at the vet--2 of the puppies have "puppy strangles" (sp??????), which the vet said is kind of like a staph infection. It boils down to weak immune systems, and the runt of the litter is one of the sick ones. So. 2 antibiotic shots given, 14 antibacterial baths to give, and they have to be separated from the other puppies, who appear to be healthy. Also, I have to put this live "good bacteria" powder[flora] on their puppy food(mush).
I think I need an aspirin.
