Just thought I would share an unusual experience I had this past week.

My inlaws were here from Alabama and as what usually happens when you have company and plan outdoor things it RAINS!

Well it rain several evenings in a row, but not enough to affect my husband and his brother playing golf EVERY DAY! ;)

Anyway, after a couple of days raining the ground was soaking and I looked out in my backyard and crawdads was a walking in my yard!

So I didn't want to deal with them towers they build and turn hard as cement and dulls my mower blade, so I got my husband and we went outside and I would hold the bucket and he would put them in there until it started raining again and we had to go back in.

Next day, my SIL suggested I use tongs to pick them up since I was not to crazy about trying to pick them up without getting pinched. Tongs works great!

Never in my life have I seen crawdads just crawlying across a yard! Neither had she, so she got some tongs and rolled up her jeans and got out there with me picking up crawdads until it started raining AGAIN!

Saved a lot of towers being built. Unfortunately, we didn't get to the front yard or side and you can tell it!

My SIL said shes never seen a yard moving before.:toofunny

Yup, even out here in Caly fournya they make great baits.

I was reading though you need to remove the claws if the bait is live for obvious reasons.

Large Mouth Bass love them

They build little "towers" of mud on top of the ground.

Nearly all crayfish use some type of shelter during part or all of their lives. Many spend most of their lives walking on stream and lake bottoms (largely at night), but quickly burrow under rocks and logs to avoid predators. Some crayfish spend their entire lives underground and only come out to feed and mate.

Burrowing crayfish are rarely seen above ground during the daytime. Burrowing crayfish dig holes in stream banks and in moist soils. Crayfish usually dig tunnels from 1 to 5 feet deep or to the water table, so that they can stay moist even during droughts and dry periods.

When crayfish burrow into the ground they create "chimneys" made of mud balls that are excavated and rise above the tunnel. Burrowing crayfish may dig their tunnels on lawns and golf courses with moist soils that can be a long distance from surface waters. Lawn owners and golf course managers dislike burrowing crayfish creating holes and mounds on their turf. Pond owners worry that too many crayfish burrows can cause their dams to collapse.

They have a picture of the hole system...reminds me of gophers which we have lots of here. I have never seen crawdads do that here

I love lobsters, but what really got me with the crawdads is vicki talking about sucking the juice out of the heads...ewwwwwww YUCK! Filipinos should like that. They eat the eyes and heads of fish. They say that is the most flavorful

It's like a mini lobster. And yes you can, and eat it too. Cajuns love crawdads.

AKA crawfish among other names.
