Won't make it this year.
Where is it at in Nashville and how many nights? Is there a website with the info?
How come you NEVER PM me with any special services at your church????? I live just five miles away.

I can't imagine TN as a whole believing the stuff that LS preaches. I know there are pastors here who have him regularly, but few that would believe what we saw on here recently.

I did a google search and found the TN District UPC website with info about Campmeeting.
It would be quite the hike for me and as bad as I hate to miss the Magic Hair Man's preaching I am going to.
I wish it was going to be webcast but a quick glance didn't show that it will. I will go back and look again though.

CC1, we usually have our annual revival in the fall. Other than that...not much special unless it's a kids' musical or play. We had a concert in February, but I wasn't on here much then, so I didn't think about letting you know. I'll definitely keep you posted on the fall revival.
Lee Stoneking is the night speaker, and if he starts on the hh tonight you'll see a soprano praise singer fighting not to roll her eyes. :whistle I've heard Bro. Kinsey a few times and he's just too scream-y for my tastes, but he's the day speaker. And, even though I've been UPC all my life I've never heard LS preach, so I'm interested to hear him.
It's Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights at the World Baptist Center just off Trinity Lane.
ETA: I see Bro. Kinsey is preaching tonight, not Bro. Stoneking.

The location is off Trinity Lane I believe, but not in the best part of N'ville. Fairly comfortable facility.
I'm sure the services will be available on CD as in years past.

Hmmmmm.....LS and a screamer......now I definitely know it is too far to go!!!! LOL.
Be sure and report back if some woman unwinds her magic hair and summons angels.
BTW- I can't believe your church doesn't have SOME kind of choir concerts or special singers throughout the year???? When I visited was about three years ago and it was pretty full on a Sunday night back then. Any plans on building or expanding the sanctuary, or going to two services?

Warning: All the below is off the topic of campmeeting!!
There are plans to build a new sanctuary in the next year or two. We just started another daughter work in South Murfreesboro, so that required money and attention first.
We really don't have a lot of special services. Our church is a bit unusual in that it actually does place a value on quality time spent with family and doesn't have a special service or revival every month that people feel obligated to attend. :sing:preach:praying We host a small music conference in February that includes a concert. We have a children's musical workshop in the summer in lieu of VBS that concludes with a performance of the musical. We also have a revival in September. Occasionally, there will be a visiting missionary or, even rarer, a choir from one of the UPC schools.
So, anyway...we're a pretty boring church I guess, but I really like it here!
ETA: Our church website is http://www.tpomchurch.com. It recently changed, so I wanted to get the current one on here somwhere.

Yes, Mrs. Pianoman will be attending with me! A couple years ago, the camp evangelist preached on women cutting their hair when we were there. We looked around, and I believe she was the only woman there which short hair! Others probably cut their hair, but they hid it by wearing it up in the Pentecostal bun! :)

The new campground is pretty much finished. They already have all the youth camps there. I don't really know what the holdup is on having campmeeting there.
There is a large auditorium, nice dining hall, a lodge with hotel-style rooms, dormitories, a concession stand, and baseball field with backstop. That's all I can remember. I think there may also be a large pavilion area. There are more buildings in the future, but it's already way nicer than Holiness Hill. ALL the buildings are air conditioned.

Rundown of last night (in case anyone is curious):
Service started promptly at 7:00.
Praise and Worship was led by Regina Sloan with praise singers and musicians from Murfreesboro.
Sis. Karen Harding sang a song she wrote about living in Graceland.
Bro. Sterniman led prayer and anointing of prayer cloths.
The Lexingtons from East Nashville sang. I don't remember what their song was, but it was a southern gospel style, and they sang it very well.
Bro. Ron Becton took up offering. This was followed by prerecorded announcements on the big screen.
The choir from Murfreesboro sang 2 songs: Hold On and Hallelujah Anyhow.
Bro. Kinsey was on the floor at 8:00. He was done preaching at 8:45, and Bro. Brown dismissed everyone at 9:15. Not to shabby for campmeeting.

We changed our night to attend campmeeting to Friday night. Bro. Stoneking will have plenty to preach about! :D

My husband and I got there late last night, so we had to sit toward the back.
Does anyone know why we don't use THEIR sound system? It was loud but muffled...if that makes any sense. For instance, when the choir sang they blasted my eardrums but I couldn't understand one word. When Bro. Kinsey preached, we could only understand what he was saying when things were quiet. But once people started clapping and "amen-ing" him, it was just a jumble of noise.
We're going earlier tonight...hopefully sitting in the middle will help some.

I had heard that because their sound system is so outrageously expensive, they won't let anyone else use it. Don't know if that's true or not, but it would explain why we always have to bring in sound equiprment during camp.

I was at Tennessee Campmeeting last night. My, how things have changed over the years! I went for nostalgia, but not much seemed familiar!
1. There was no praise and worship part of the service! The service started off with two choir songs.
2. The music was guitar driven! There wasn't the usual Hammond and keyboard driven Pentecostal style music that I grew up with. Mrs. Pianoman thought it sounded more like a pop/rock concert!
3. All announcements were pre-recorded on video! This really helped the service to move along nicely.
4. I wasn't familiar with ANY of the songs that were sung. Missing were all of the traditional Pentecostal campmeeting songs! It's obvious that the youth are being served, which I think is great!
5. A youth group choreographed a dance to a song titled, "I'm Taking it All Back!" Some of the old timers would be rolling over in their grave! :D I was shocked that this was allowed....(Not that I think there's anything wrong with that!)
6. It had a "pep rally" atmosphere! Some things never change. :)
I'm going to start another thread on Bro. Stoneking's sermon!

Sorry that I missed this earlier, St. Mark!
I am still "old school", so the Hammond Organ and keyboard driven music from the 70's and 80's is what I'm most comfortable with. The problem is that my kids and their friends don't care for MY style of music.
The style of music presented does cater to the younger generation, which shows that the UPCI in Tennessee is alive and well! I'm just accepting that changes in music styles is a natural progression with different generations. After all, the old folks didn't care for our style of music when it first came out either! :)
As far as standards go, it was a typical conservative holiness crowd. Most all the women wore dresses and had their hair fixed up.
I must say that seemed to be the largest crowd ever for Tennessee campmeeting. I would say there were between 3 and 4 thousand people in attendance. The place was packed!

You know what is odd to me? In the Black community, the youth
still love hammond organ, choirs, foot stompin' church. It's mostly
in our white churches that it's being done away with.
It was predicted that when the UPC had a split, it would dwindle
to nothing. to my surprise, the conferences I have attended here
in CA. have been packed as well

I didn't realize that the organ and choirs were considered "old school"! I always thought that was just "church".
I guess my preference would be the old school style. I don't have a problem with these newer songs...they have some nice lyrics...but they just don't do it for me. Not saying I can't worship to these songs......It's just that it seems that I am looking for more "anointing" than nice lyrics...

Was that it for the singing...the 2 choir songs? Wow! Worship service always seemed like the one of the most important aspects of church...
What are the traditional pentecostal campmeeting songs? I am sure I'll know them when I hear them but I can't think of the songs you are referring to right now...
As far the choreography goes.....I'm not sure I care for it too much...Especially during service. I think I would be more comfy with it during a talent show or something like that, but it doesn't seem like worship to me...But then again, I've only seen it a few times and that was just the feeling I got from it. It seemed more like "entertainment" for the crowd. I don't have a problem entertainment....just not during a service.
I can see the "pep rally" part. I think at most campmeetings you will find that "super charged" atmosphere... it's alright as long as people walk away with substance from the Word of God and not just a high that will eventual drop....
NO ORGAN? :crazy what's up with that? :)

The same choir later came back up to sing two more songs before the preaching. There was this lady that sang a solo with a soundtrak also.
When I say campmeeting songs, I mean songs out of the "Pentecostal Praises" songbook. There was no "Pentecostal Fire is Falling", "Come and Dine", etc. No "How Great Thou Art" or "To God be the Glory".
They had an organ playing, but you couldn't hear it! The guitars and drums were drowning it out!

When I say campmeeting songs, I mean songs out of the "Pentecostal Praises" songbook. There was no "Pentecostal Fire is Falling", "Come and Dine", etc. No "How Great Thou Art" or "To God be the Glory".They had an organ playing, but you couldn't hear it! The guitars and drums were drowning it out!
OK, sorry Piano-person, but you just seriously dated yourself!! I have attended Camp Meeting in one of the most conservative districts around for years now, and I don't even remember when any of those songs were last sung!! :evilglee :ursofunny :ursofunny

:D Those were just songs that popped into my mind! :) I'm just saying that I didn't recognize ANY of the songs that were sung. No Bill Gaither, Lanny Wolfe, Andre Crouch, etc. songs!

It's quickly becoming Old School in the UPC and has been
for quite some time in the Assembly of God and charismatic/XUPC
churches.
Many UPC churches have adopted the Rick warran Joel Osteen
style worship and music

I was at Tennessee Campmeeting last night. My, how things have changed over the years! I went for nostalgia, but not much seemed familiar!
4. I wasn't familiar with ANY of the songs that were sung. Missing were all of the traditional Pentecostal campmeeting songs! It's obvious that the youth are being served, which I think is great!
I didn't get to go Friday night, but I DID feel the same way on Thursday evening. This must be how our elderly saints feel in a regular church service when we keep singing new choruses. But one thing my husband (worship leader) does to remedy the situation is to throw in a classic at the end of one of the new songs. For example, we do "You Are Great" and go into "How Great Thou Art". It helps everyone feel a part of that portion of the service.
I will say, though, that the girl leading worship Thursday night did an unfamiliar song, then went into "He Has Done Great Things". Yay...I got to participate in one song!:hanky
Christ Church Nashville sings one "hymn" as part of our normal Sunday Service content. Years ago when I took the "Welcome To CC" class Pastor Hardwick at one point asked the class if anybody knew why they did that. I raised my hand and answered "for the old geezers!". He laughed and said I was correct.
I like it when it is a powerful, timeless classic hymn like The Old Rugged Cross or Amazing Grace but over half the time Landy Gardner pulls some Baptist or Methodist hymn I have never heard of that is just horrible.

LOL!!! I knew I could get you going.
To your point I do know what you are saying. I remember being surprised a couple of years ago when watching the POA webcast of their service to see the guitar as the featured instrument and the B3 and piano relegated to a supporting role.
It is definitely different than traditional Pentecostal music.
Oh, and there is absolutely nothing Episcapalian about my churches music. More like lively Baptist or laid back Spirit Filled.

Now don't fall over with a heart attack but I like a little of it.
It's a refreshing change up BUT after a while it can get boring
and SOME ( not all of the songs are wordy). when I say boring,
the chord structure is usually 3 or 4 chords at the most- nothing
challenging musically. however, having said that, I think a lot
of people like it because musically, it's not intimidating. most
congregations are muscically very limited. so the new stuff they
can learn quickly and chime right in so it does have its benefits
and finally, it's ultiamatley about the people entering into
God's presence

You are not kidding about some of the songs being "wordy". You also forgot to mention that some of them have little or no melody.
I was joking the other day that if people are worshipping and entering God's precence with some of these songs we definitely know it is God because there certainly is no catchy melody or groove they are getting into.
Like you I find some of the songs refreshing but others just boring and examples of poor songwriting.

You are being absurd if you don't acknowledge that music can play an important part in worship.
There are songs that have words with great meaning that when sung in unity focuses peoples thoughts on the same thing. Perhaps an aspect or attribute of God.
Of course we don't worship the music but don't act like music plays no factor in worship.
One can certainly worship without music but what a blessing music can be!

YOu are right! Many times, it's the worship service that prepares the atmosphere for the Word of God.
Get the wrong songs, or even great songs with no anointing and you end up with lifeless worship service....Then many times a preacher has to struggle during his message... all aspects of a service work together! Thank God for worship leaders and musicians that seek God for His will instead of just getting up to sing a nice song with rhyming lyrics!

Ahhhhhh...so your saying its more about those who seek what God would have us do rather than what we prefer.....Im not downplaying the importance of music (or drama or art) in worship...I just think sometimes, our soulish man "likes" a certain type or style of music, and that sometimes, not always, determines if we have had a "good" worship service. Being a worship leader, (in a United Methodist Church) it is my responsibility to be a servant...first to God and then the congregation. With that in mind, I many times, have to set my style or song preferences aside to follow what I am supposed to do. Dying to self,,,raising others up. Im not saying what any of you are doing is wrong or incorrect....just food for thought. Challenge yourself to purchase or download some kind of christian music you dont really care for and worship with/to it.

I will admit to you that I do have my own likes and dislikes in styles of music....But to be honest with you, I can worship no matter what. I grew up with the songbook hymns but they aren't my style...However, I have been in service where a good elder would lead service with his guitar and sing the old hymns and I could worship God just as much as any other time. When Elder Meng would start singing "Oh I want to See Him" I praise God in a dance just as much as when we were singing the "dancin' shoutin' foot stompin' " songs. ... I think I was saying more or less that it is what's behind the song.... A great shoutin' aisle runnin' song that is sang with no anointing, no spirit, is...IMO nothing more than a song... I don't care for the contemporary style of music, but I have no problem praising God when it's sang and played with spirit....
Actually, I've been in the boring, dry worship services and I still praised God because He's worthy and the songs don't stop my praise...But oh what a prayer and anointed singing will do for a service! And I am speaking from a saints point of view and also from a music director's point of view.....
