View Full Version : Uh Oh, I See A Problem
I talked with my boss today and he seemed a little antsy at my still being off.
In particular, he was a little perturbed that my surgery is put off indefinitely.
By law, they don't have to wait for me, but if the job goes to someone else, I just need for God to redirect & open another door.
Thankfully WCB will be obligated to pay my wage until I get another job.
Is it law there that you get paid full salary while on medical leave? In the USA, all you would get is something like 60-65%, while under workmen's comp.

Here it is 70% with no deductions.

Are you unable to work while waiting on surgery?

Yes.
I just cant believe it is taking this long to get surgery.

Me too.
Although the talk in medical circles is a lack of medical personal.
There is money and facilities, but not enough people & we aren't pumping enough out of the system.
So, if you are a doctor, surgeon, nurse, you could come here & write your own pay cheque!
Ron, I know you are in a bad situation, so don't think I am saying this to be hurtful towards you, but this is what happens with nationalized health care.

Rico, the thing I am most happy about is the fact that your recognize that I am a right wing nut!
That makes me happy. I am a Right wing nut. ergo a right wing ideologue.
Not only that but I am RIGHT.
But lets state it clear for all to hear, Rico believes nationalized medicine is bad!
Yea Rico, I precieve thou shalt one day be delivered!

No offense taken, but I think your analysis is wrong.
There is a shortage of medical personal worldwide even in the US!
The Mrs said they even have shortage of personal in Oregon.

im sorry Rico, i really thought by pointing out that when a guy cant get surgery due to nationalized health care system, you mean its bad.
I take it back.

It's true there is a high demand, but people aren't sitting around waiting for necessary surgeries because of it, Ron.
That is the thing, it is considered a "elective" surgery.
Not emergency enough to get it done, but necessary enough to keep me out of work.

I could get elective surgery in this country any time I wanted to, Ron. Like I said, there is a shortage of medical professionals in the US, but it's not affecting people's ability to get surgery.
At any rate, I know sitting at home all day with nothing to do but post on AFF must be driving ya nuts. I feel for you, Bro. A man likes to feel he's doing something with his time that's productive. Have you considered doing a work from home job? I could refer you to a company I know about.

Indeed, but if we were to intitute nationalized health care here, the basic laws of supply and demand would kick in.
There wouild be a significant increase in demand (that is, the people taking advantage of free/reduced-cost healthcare) while the supply (facilities, personnel) would be the same, at least initially. This would cause longer wait times, and reduction in the average quality of care overall.
Ya know, I think I have figured out what the problem is with right wing nuts in this country. They only pay attention to what they want to pay attention to. :D

What has happened is this.
The Government oversees Medical, but Doctors are in private practice in contract with the Government.
All Canadians pay premiums for health insurance.
The Government negotiates rates with doctors and hospitals.
There is no delay for emergency surgery.
We have had two American Pastors get open hearty surgery that was timely, good and didn't bankrupt thier pockets.

Yes, we started a new Church in North Vancouver.
We are having new people in every service with a few sticking.
One lady who is 83 used to be in Pentecost & when I stated praying for her, she burst forth in tongues.
She said it has been years!

That is a fantastic report!!
Is your church being assisted by any other church? I only ask because I know what a monumental task it is to start up a new work! And, from what I hear, Vancouver can be pretty pricey in property values.

Well, I'm not trying to turn this into a long drawn-out debate on health care, but...
1... not having health insurance is not the same as not having health care.
2... Check the facts: There is not a big difference between the life expectancy rates in Canada vs the US.

No shortage of medical personnel keeps Americans from having needed surgery. That is a fact.
I could have just about any kind of surgery from cardio to neuro and everything in between in a matter of a few days and if an emergency a few hours.
For all of the denigration of the United States health care system it is still the best in the world.
All nationaized medicene is going to do is create a market for insurance like I saw being sold in England where you can buy insurance to pay for surgery like yours when the national health care system won't get to it for ages.

I don't think so CC1!
I know of personally where family members of Canadians are routinely refused tests & care by HMO'S & where pre existing conditions are either not covered,
or are very limited in scope.
I also know of cases where there are waits!

I challenge you to show me where someone here has had to wait like you have for surgery that is not elective.
Any medical procedure critical enough that it would keep a person from working would be done.
I was at the emergency room within the past month and was examined and had a cat scan BEFORE they even asked me if I had insurance.
When I was leaving and giving them my insurance info I read a placard that stated how they would not refuse care and the various methods for people without insurance to get their bills handled.
Our health system has many problems, mostly inflation many times the percentage of other items, but I absolutely would not trade it for second rate care where you can't even get neccessary surgery or in the case of some pregnant women who require special care you have to send them to a neighboring country for care.
Everybody is covered under your plan but the overall level of care is decreased also.
Add to that the less homogenous (read that minorities and poor people with poor health habits)population we have and the USA will be bankrupted if health care is socialized.

Well, I'm happy for Canada.
But the difference in life expectancy between the US and Canada is about 3 years... not as big a difference as some people might think.
https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/2102rank.html
Canada doesn't have a higher life expectancy simply because they have a government controlled health system. And numbers don't always tell the whole story....
America has a significantly higher homicide rate, a higher suicide rate, and a higher rate of auto accidents than Canada does. Obviously these things factor into the overall life expectancy rate.
And Americans' lifestyle choices cause Americans to have a significantly higher rate of obesity than Canada. America's obesity problem is not because of a lack of a national heath care system.
Thus, the 3 year difference in life expectancy numbers has a lot of factors that contribute to it. When people claim that the difference is simply because of national health care, they either don't know the facts, or they're just being intentionally misleading.
Ron,
To my point about how it is easier for Canada to provide health care to a homogenous populatoin that is relatively healthy Canada had, in 2004, only an estimated minority populaton of 4 million people out of 32 million total.
America has signficant Black and Hispanic populatons with poor eating habits that cause increased medical problems. I don't feel like paying for somebody elses bad haibts. They can get a job and inusurance just like I did.
By the way in looking for the Canadian demographic info I stumbled across some disturbing religous demographic info.
In 1991 1.6% of Canadians identified themselves as Pentecostal but 10 years later in 2001 only 1.2% did. Yikes! A 15.3% drop. Whats the scoop?

I disagree.
Look, I read about a lady that passed out in a wating room & died while security workers & personal walked by.
Is that the whole system in the States? No.
Is every system perfect? No.
A friend who I asked prayer for who had a viral infection of the Heart was seen and treated right away. Every procedure that was needed was done when his body could handle it.
When my BP was high I had a CT Scan Stat.
Thing is I'll say it again, when the US, England, Australia, & Middle Eastern countries regularly come around recruiting people, we may get one person from England and another goes to Australia.
There is a shortage.
A nurse can make 60-80 thousand a year here, she could make the same in Australia & live in a tropical paradise.
It is a competitive market & it is the same all over.
You may not have it there but it is all over.
Well, I'm happy for Canada.
