My husband and I may be going to IN in the next few weeks. No offense to anyone from IN, but that state never seemed to have many areas of interest as far as tourist attractions....Someone gave me a brochure about "Amish Acres" and I just read a little about it online. What about churches in the Nappanee area and the Elkhart area???

Has anyone been to "Amish Acres"?....If so, tell me about your experiences!..What about the restaurant and the musical theatre?

Here is the link:

Thanks!

Have been there several times.
The food is amazing! Good Amish cooking. Served family style. And the shows there have always been wonderful. Last time I was there I saw, "Annie." Very enjoyable evening. And you are right..there aren't too many points of interest in Indiana. Guess that is why I didn't last too long as a Hoosier.

I would prefer an Independent Church. (no offense to UPC intended).

YES!!! Extremely flat. Cornfields and soybean fields. And then MORE cornfields. Not much in the scenery department, but the food in that area sure can't be beat!! Also, the Amish crafts are everywhere, so if you like quilts and jams, it has lots of shopping.

I saw the old steel mill in Gary, In. Now that was a relic. Go south toward the river if you want to see hill country and forests.

I prefer rolling hills....Not particularly fond of flat land or mountains as a place to live...OK to visit but wouldn't want to stay there long.

Most of Indiana is flat. There are things to do in Indianapolis, and I know of an amusement park in Santa Claus. There are lots of places to go fishing, but nothing good around these parts. What kind of entertainment are you looking for?

Not really looking for very active participatory entertainment so much...I think Amish Acres will be most likely a good fit for what we are looking for while we are in the area.

Yes, been there and go back to see cousins every few years. I have quite a few old order Mennonite relatives there. We had my grandma's funeral service there (one of them) even though she is buried in Lancaster County PA.

The restaurant is great, but we never did the theater there.

That part of the state is very cleaned up and tidy looking. All the farms are kept very nice.

Hi, Stephen Hoover.... I thought you would most likely know something about this. From the website, it looks as though it would be worth the drive from where we will be in IN (not a long drive at all). Thanks..I KNEW the food would be good but wanted to hear it "officially" from folks here.

The big closed down one? :lol There were several steel mills in Gary. USSteel was one of them (my grandpa retired from that one). Inland Steel is another one (Dad and other grandpa retired from that one). By the time I got of age, getting a job at the steel mill was next to impossible. Thank God, too.

What about the Notre Dame of Paris, France?

"Each face, each stone of this venerable monument is not only a page of
the history of the country, but also of the history of knowledge and art....
Time is the architect, the people are the builder."
— Victor Hugo, Notre-Dame de Paris

Victor Hugo wrote The Hunchback of Notre Dame to call attention to the poor condition of the cathedral. It worked. The repairs were made more quickly because of his novel. It is said the windows were broken and treasures had been stolen. He got people's attention with the Hunchback. It didn't fare too well during the French Revolution.

Been there MANY times! The best deal though is about ten minutes away in Shipshewanna! The Amish restaraunt there is incredible AND the Mennonite/Amish Cultural museum is a MUST see! They have a guided tour, explaining the various differences between Old Order Amish (men wear THREE buttons on their shirts), New Order Amish (Disfellowshipped because the men wear FOUR buttons on theirs), Hutterites, Mennonites, Brethren, Beechy Amish (Absolutely disfellowshipped! Their women wear the Same Amish pattern dresses and Bonnets BUT are allowed (shudder) to wear them in Pastel colours NOT prints, of peach, pinks and Apricots) it surely helps give some insight into the human nature that has caused so many differences in the Apostolic Faith! Elder Jimmy Wyant pastors there in Nappanee, ACI and he is a wonderful man, he and his wife are "Old Timers" who are originally out of Christ Temple SOUTH BEND (Old Brother Ray Jones church, later Pastored by Martin Ballestero Senior and Junior.)

I would definitely head over to Shipshewanna, its just minutes away. (Also they happen to be one of the few sites of a Wells Fargo Bank east of the Mississippi river.) But go see the Cultural center. INTERESTING POINT...They have a diroama that just screams History of the modern Pentecostal movement. Evidently just like US the original members of their group were not as clothing obsessed as they became later, the original Amish being clothed in finery and jewels of the day (1500s Switzerland, Germany and Holland) the black and the bonnets is a much later development, kind of like ...well I'll leave THAT alone. But definitely do Shipshewanna, you WONT be sorry!

P.S. we don't EVEN want to discuss the Mennonites...they have compromised completely and actually have Cars, Electricity and BATHROOMS ***INSIDE*** (!!!!) the home!

Shipshewana Indiana has a huge auction each Wednesday. At least 10 acutioneers working the same time under one roof. Huge flea market on Tuesday and Wednesdays. It would take 2 days for the flea market. Many shops and neat things to see.

Town fills up on Tues. and Wed. but dies way down afterwards. Hard to find motel rooms on these days. Great area for a large concentration of amish/mennonite shops etc.

LOL! You really have checked them out haven't you? I enjoyed your post.

Note there is a large constituency of Old Order Mennonites who are still non - auto (Horse and Buggy) about a hundred of them are my reletives. :)
