This is a thread for only piano players to post! The minimum requirement is the melody of "Heart and Soul"! :)
Do you play mostly by ear (like a true Apostolic! :)) or do you play by note?
How long have you been playing? Do you play in church?

I can compose a song knowing the melody, but I have to have the music in front of me.
Playing since I was 10. My mother was a piano teacher.
Sometimes I play in church.

I rarely sit down at the piano anymore. If I do play any keys it is usually just to add strings or synths to a recording or something like that.
I enjoy playing if I am singing but if I am just going to be jamming around I will pick up the guitar.
I mostly play by ear so I know what notes and chords I want to hit on the piano but because of my lack of practice I can't really play that good anymore.
Instead of just playing I have to actually practice for the song, but this is a technical issue not musical.

Yep, I remember those days. I hated to practice. I wanted to jam. I hated it!!!
I could play really good classical stuff but that wasn't going to make me popular. Finally, I just had to learn guitar.

I loved to practice, but my mother didn't like to have a lot of noise when she was finished with her lessons, so I only really practiced the most on Saturdays when she was visiting her mother. As a result of that, I never applied myself like I could have even though I love it so much.
Now, I only play when I'm in the mood and I LOVE classical music.
I never cared about playing in church. I saw too much conflict and power struggle amongst musicians and singers - not my cup of tea. It seemed like a waste of mental energy to be honest about it.

Took piano lessons for nine years...............can read music fine, but cannot play a lick without music.
My parents bought me a piano for Christmas when I was in 4th grade, they paid for me to have lessons for about a year and a half-- until the teacher refused to teach me gospel music. I haven't read any music since that time, but God helped me learn to play just about anything I want to play by ear. It amazes my kids that I can sit down with a radio being played, and start playing whatever song is playing.... at least I could until my piano got out of tune. Now I won't play it until I can find someone to come in and tune it for me. Maybe that's what I'll tell my husband I want for our anniversary... :D
I learned how to play the guitar a few years ago. I'm not really all that good at it, because I can't do all them fancy solos and whatnot. I'm pretty much a strum along with the song type of guitar player. I've thought about learning how to play the piano, but haven't taken any lessons yet. In fact, when I do get ready to buy me a piano, Pianoman will be the first person I call.

I love playing the piano. I have been playing in church since I was 15. I play a couple of other instruments as well but piano and keyboards are my favorite... In fact, I just got my Yamaha Motif in my house and I am going insane because it's not set up :kickcan
I learned to read music when I was 9 but when it comes to playing in church, I play by ear or by watching my LordChocolate.
I had my first piano teacher when I was 14 or 15... Lisa D... from Ocala, Fl. :) She taught me for a short while... And then I had a great piano teacher who graduated from Stetson University in Florida. He also played for my wedding... Anyway....
Music runs on both sides of my family and my boys are already involved in music.....
I would gladly give up my living room and turn it into a music room...Guests can just sit on the floor when they come over!:ursofunny

I play mostly by ear or using chord sheets now, but I can play by note.
Took lesson to learn by not for eight years.
Don't play the piano (yes we still have a piano and not a keyboard) in church much my wife does that. I usually play the organ, but on occasion I play the piano.
Many churches that we go to no longer have an organ or piano but keyboards, I hate that, and then I am forced to play the thing.

I have both. I don't mind a keyboard if it's 'touch sensitive' with weighted keys but that makes it MUCH heavier to transport.

I guess keyboards are alright, I just don't care for them. the church I came out of always had a piano until the storm damaged the church and the piano. So I have mostly played a real piano.
My wife likes keyboards. She likes to cheat and use the transposer. I like to play a lot in A flat and she hates to.
Each to his own I guess.

That's funny! I have used the transpose but I try to refrain from it because Lordchocolate says real musicians don't transpose! lol
I can play in most of the keys, but sometimes, I admit, that I am lazy and don't want to work at figuring out some songs in certain keys....
There is nothing like a piano... I love keyboards with all their sounds, and yes, they keys need to be weighted.... But nothing compares to a real piano!

I have been playing since I was 13. My great aunt showed me the basics of how to chord. She showed me to take a hynm book, at that time, only songs in C, and read the base line. Whenever it would change from C, F or G I would change chords in the right hand. Later I took music theory in HS and the instrutor allowed me to self study, he took me thru 2nd year college theory books. The courses ended with composing. When I got to college I took Sax and got into Jazz. That led me to improvising. It has been so long since I read music that the base clef has just about left me. I play for church, mostly by ear. But if there is a new song and I have music I can read the melody line and chord symbols. If the song does not have chord symbols I go back to by aunts trick and see the chord changes in the base line. I know all the chords for all the keys so I just have to look for the cord changes.
I also read the "nashville number" system, I, IV, V7, ii, iii, vi, etc. Really makes it easy to transpose into any key.

Charles Walter pianos are very nice! Many Steinway dealers have sold Walter uprights because Steinway doesn't make home style pianos. I've actually met Mr. Charles Walters and his family at a trade show.
The Walter pianos are hand made just like the Steinway is. I would say they are the best upright home piano you can buy, but they are expensive to own.
They started making a grand piano about ten years ago or so. I haven't had an opportunity to play one of their grands. I have heard that they are very nice.
If they are indeed very nice and cost about the same as a Steinway, which would you rather have? If you (or your ancestors) ever have to sell the piano down the road, the Steinway would bring much more value because of it's world known reputation.
We like to say that the Steinway is the least expensive piano to own, because you usually can sell it for much more than you paid for it! It's actually an investment!

The reason I brought it up is my dad purchased a Walter upright about 35 years ago. I now own it and it's a wonderful little piano. Solid spruce sounding board, strings go all the way to the floor, etc.
Obviously if I could own a Steinway I would....except maybe it would actually be a Bosendofer........:whistle

:ursofunny Bosendorfers are very very nice, but get ready to throw down some serious cash! :) ($100,000 - $250,000)
Many consider the Bosendorfer the best piano in the world for small intimate venues. The entire piano is made of spruce which give it an incredible live sound, but it doesn't project very well.
The Steinway uses hard rock maple wood in it's rim which reflects the energy back to the soundboard. The end result is a sound that projects very well.
This is why you very seldom see a Bosendorfer on a concert stage. You would strain to hear the piano over the orchestra.

I have not met him, but I've heard a lot about him. He was the tuner/technician for many of the greats! I believe he actually traveled some with Horowitz. I was told that the action on Horowitz's grand had very little key dip! Franz Mohr had to make the action to fit his liking.
Others who played his piano didn't like the way it played at all! :)

My parents bought a piano when I was just about 14 years old, and my sister taught me to play "Jesus is the Answer" by Andre Crouch.
I played drums and bass in church, and didn't really get into the keyboard too much until I was in Bible College, and then took lessons from Dan Dean.
That's when my piano playing days really began! I play mostly by ear, and I can pretty much trace all of my playing style back to Dan Dean.
I don't play in church now, but did for years!

I play piano.
I took lessons for about two years when I was about 7 years old but after I heard the melody I wouldn't stick to the music and would just play it "by ear". I wish I'd kept the music up now. I can read chord charts some and can "pick out" a simple song by note. I've had a little experience with the Nashville # system when in the studio. When I do weddings I usually always get the sheet music to get all the pretty chords but technically I play by ear.....and not great, but can get by. For many years I relied on my mom who played or someone in the church to play for me. I used to only like to play in C and F, but after some folks moved from our church I started playing for the church. My mom played organ. A lot of the congregational songs we sang were in Ab and I hated playing in that key. I would try to get mom to drop it to G but she wouldn't. She said if I could play in one key I could play in all, so (thanks to her) I did start playing in other keys. Some I still prefer over others. Having a transposer on a keyboard is the ONLY thing I like about a keyboard. I much more prefer an acoustical piano.
I do accompany myself when I sing most of the time and occasionally play in services but am not the "full-time" pianist. I have played organ on occasion and accordian.
My dad gave me on of his guitars before he passed but my few attempts to play have not been very successful! I have small hands and difficulty in making the chords.

If you are just playing for you to enjoy. Buy a song book that has songs you like. For the piano play the melody in the right hand, just one note until you are comfortable and then add a harmony, and read the chord symbol and play the cord with the left.
For the organ most people play the cord with the right hand and use 1 or two fingers in the left. Usually the root, C if C chord. and maybe the fifth, G if in C chord.

I can play by note if i have to, and if i study it for a few minutes. Basically, i study it to get the tune in my head, then play what i hear in my head. (weird, huh?)
I am 26 and i have played the piano since i was 5, (by ear). I've been playing in church since i was 10, and played the B3 since I was 15. my favorite keys are C# and G. i have been heavily influenced by black gospel music and smooth jazz, which is very evident when you hear me play. I am trying to learn some southern gospel, to me it is the most complicated to play. (good southern gospel style, like anthony burger or stan whitmire)

I used to do pretty good with the right hand, but I will have to brush up on reading the scales. :)
My organ has the cheat chords I can use until I relearn the chords.

I'm pretty sure it is a C.
I want to get back to playing it again.
The problem is when I have time to play I don't have the money for the lessons, when I have the money for the lessions I don't have the time to take the lessons.
Such is life!
But I still have my books and will just have to start practing again.

Is this the guy you introduced me to at your church ?
No, you met Christopher Phillips, who is the player and arranger for the choir. Christopher recently married Phil Goldsberry's daughter.
Regi leads our praise and worship service. Regi recently started a new idea called www.experienceworship.com.

Some of them are pretty genre specific and I'm not sure what style of music you are interested in playing. I refer a lot of people in my church to learngospelmusic.com . They have a lot of Black gospel style and some contemporary. A lot of their music is even spelled out where they write out each actual note you play in the chords, so all you have to know is what the keys are on a keyboard.
Here is a list of such chorded songs. http://www.earnestandroline.com/Music/chords.html
If you explore on this site, you'll find some midis and vids as well.
There are many others that I can post later.

I love Stan. When he plays SG he has a ragtime feel. It really adds another flavor to SG. And I think he is the only SG keyboard that it. Of course, he can play anything. He has "broadway" cd of and love song cd.
Anthony could beat out a piano like no other. He was not my favorite piano. I really like Roger though. And Gerald Wolfe with Greater Vision is awesome.

I have only been on AFF about a week and I just discovered this thread. I have been playing in church for about 40 years. I took a few private lessons when I was in the 3rd and 4th grade but I am mostly self-taught. I can read music but I'm slow; I don't have a quick eye-to-hand reaction time. I prefer to play by ear. My two favorite songs to play are How Great Thou Art and Goodby World Goodby. I have one song on apostolicartists.com and nothing yet on youtube.

This is a thread for only piano players to post! The minimum requirement is the melody of "Heart and Soul"! :)
Do you play mostly by ear (like a true Apostolic! :)) or do you play by note?
How long have you been playing? Do you play in church?
I used to play by ear in my Dad's church from childhood till I left home.
I can sight read (singing) by note. I never learned to play the piano utilizing sheet music. It always intimidated me.

I took years of classical piano before graduating high school. When I went to JCM, you were required to learn to play by ear as a Music Major, which was totally new to me. (WHAT IN THE WORLD WAS I THINKING MAJORING IN MUSIC??) Anyway, with the help of the good Lord and Wayne Goodine, I mastered all the songs we had to do by memorizing everything. However, playing naturally by ear never came to me.
Years later, when we took the church in Adamsville, I had to be the designated piano player since no one else could play at all. For eleven years, I played and even led worship part of that time. Guess what? All that practice at JCM paid off after all! It still never came easily to me, but while I was playing I would consciously be thinking, "this chord leads to this chord".....it was never natural like it was for Mr. Steinway and others. But God blessed the efforts and the church grew in spite of me!
I was being trained at JCM in the Music dept. for something down the road that I couldn't see at the time. God is good!

I'm 48.. I've played since... I don't know, I'd have to ask my mother when I took my first piano lesson. I've got free songs that can be downloaded on www.sermon.net , just look up Jerry Moon, Boger Texas, or Biblical Apostolic Church. I know my notes, but play by ear. I love to find a new insturment to learn to play though...

It doesn't work that way with some contemporary music; sometimes you don't know what will be next, and sometimes I hear conflicting sounds, like a bass note that doesn't match the chord.

Knowing how good St. Mark is, I don't know if I can even qualify. Mark has more licks than a Golden Retriever.
I started lessons as a kid. Learned how to sight read very well. Played classical. Started playing in church. Do some ear but prefer having music, chord charts.

The newer stuff is way beyond me, unless I have a chord chart. Then I can play most anything.

I used to play decent 'musician' piano but I don't have the desire or the need anymore. The band that plays at my church, the keyboard player is very good. He gigs around town.

I don't think I have ever heard Gerald Wolfe; does anybody know where I can hear him?
Does anybody know Denny Hahn? I think he's somewhere in Texas. He had an unusual arrangement of The Lord's Prayer.

I met Denny Hahn at JCM.As a bass player I did not enjoy playing with him,he was very difficult to play with, didn't listen to any other instrument besides himself.Played way too many notes( too busy).I have't seen him much since he moved to Texas.
