I've heard Austin is nice. Still don't plan on visiting there though. I've heard the law is probation happy in that State. Can't remember where I read it, but I read somewhere that almost half the population in TX is on probation. Y'all either have a bunch of lawbreakers there, or they arrest you for some dumb stuff in the State of Texas. I recently heard about the guy who got away with shooting two guys because he thought they were robbing his neighbor's house. I know it's legal to shoot to kill if they're breaking into your own house, but your neighbor's? You get arrested for dumb stuff but can shoot people breaking into your neighbor's house? Doesn't compute. lol

Yeah, Texas is probably the last state you want to get into the Breaking and Entering business. There are more guns and hunters on my street than probably in most full cities. Oh well, nobody said a life of crime was supposed to be easy.

Guess I was wrong on my stats. Texas still, however, has the highest incarceration rate of any State.

In a continued examination of those states that lead the national trend in increasing levels of incarceration, the Justice Policy Institute turns a focus on the state of Texas. The Lone Star State's criminal justice system is particularly worthy of scrutiny at this time, as the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) reported in August, 2000 that Texas, for the first time, leads the nation in imprisoning its citizens: Texas now has the nation's largest incarcerated population under the jurisdiction of its prison system.11 Since 1990, Texas has lead the nation's 50 states with an annual average growth rate of 11.8%, about twice the annual average growth rate of other state prison systems (6.1%). Even more important to the national context, since 1990, nearly one in five new prisoners added to the nation's prisons (18%) was in Texas.12

Why does your State have the highest rate of incarceration then, if y'all are the law and order types? You'd think all them people having guns and the right to shoot anyone they see stealing something would make it a right peaceful place to live.

I know that a lot of people were uneasy about that (obviously none of them on a grand jury), but people are tired of being victimized. It's not as if someone breaking into my neighbor's house is going to "play by the rules" and not harm me or my family if the situation took a turn that way. This was obviously a man who had a relationship with his neighbor and knew enough about him to know that he was out of town. The man claimed that he thought they were armed and turning towards him when he went to stop them.

Rico, there are certain types of crimes that happen in certain places at a very high rate. In Houston, if you go out to the little ghetto clubs and get involved in the crazy underground drug world fueled by our size, proximity to Mexico, wide open spaces, illegal alien trade and traffic, etc....you run a high risk of being victimized. However, I believe that regular, working, middle class neighborhoods do sleep pretty peacibly knowing that evrybody knows that there is a 2 to one chance that any given house on the street is packing heat.

Ron

The folks in Arkansas would throw hand grenades over the state line & the Texans would pick them up, pull out the pins and throw them back!:D

Years ago, I was alone here as my kids were in school and my closest neighbors at work. Two guys were trying to break into their back window. I saw them, called the Sheriff's Dept., got my shotgun and hollered at them and told them to leave. If I hadn't had that 20 gauge in my hands they probably wouldn't have listened to me. And they were caught. They were breaking into houses in rural areas stealing guns.

Rico, I clicked on the link you gave about the amount of murder/rape/burglaries per city. I think that that chart alone highlights why people are fed up with lawlessness and victimization. There is an entire sub-culture in our country who seem to think that other innocent people (my family and yours) are here for them to victimize, abuse, terrorize, and live off of. I think that the message does need to be sent that that is not a viable option for them.

I love TEXAS because that is where God planted us!
Jesus said every plant that His Father hath not planted
shall be rooted up. These ole roots have grown down
deep and have now extended out.

Some "runners" from these roots have extended east, to
Canton, to Mineola. Some have extended slightly to the
northeast, east of McKinney.
Some to the northwest around the Ft. Worth area, etc.
But many have remained in this area.

We were transplanted from one very small town in Texas
to another when I was a child. That will be 58 yrs. ago,
come Sept.30. Seen a lot of changes. This small town we
were transplanted to, over half a century ago, has grown
into a city of close to 40,000 population.

Less than 2000 pop. when we came here. We only had one
elementary school, combined with the Jr. High classes and
one high school nearby. Now we have 9 elementary schools,
6 Intermediate & Junior High, and two large high schools.

Anyway, TEXAS is where HE planted us, so unless He moves
us to move elsewhere, Texas is where we will stay. Our parents
and all eleven of we siblings never lived out of the state of Texas.
[B]Of the, right at 100, direct descendants of my parents who are
both deceased, only one grandson lives out of the state of Texas.

Did I say we were a close-knit family! The eleven tribes of Blakey
love TEXAS for TEXAS is our home on God's green earth!

Bro. Rico, you have your reasons, I'm sure for not wanting to
be here, but we have our reasons for being here. As I said, this
is where God planted us!

We have seemed to have grown well in this rich TEXAS soil! LOL!

Blessings,

I love Texas. It is a great place and has been good to my family. my mom actually was born in Texas, but 5 generations of my family (including me) have lived on the same hill. I had to leave to make a living. I would really love to retire and move back to the place my dad lives, where his dad lived, where his dad lived and where his dad settled long before the civil war.

I had to leave to make a living. I would really love to retire and move back to the place my dad lives, where his dad lived, where his dad lived and where his dad settled long before the civil war.

until then, Texas will be my home away from home.

I am from La and have no desire to go back, at least not the area I grew up in. It is not the same at all.

Sometimes I feel as if I'd be willing to move anywhere that has some good fishing! I hate it that the fishing around here isn't what I was used to. Hmph! :kickcan

My son and I watched this program on crawdad fisherman there in LA. Them guys can make a few hundred dollars a day with a regular old jon boat and some traps. I almost packed up and headed out after I saw that program! :D

Lake Fork is about 20 minutes from here. Considered world class. Have you been to the fishing page here on AFF? I joined even though I don't fish anymore.

Dry Creek is nice and quiet. the trees are a bit bigger. some of the old ones are gond and new ones are growing in their place.

the creek where we used to swim is still there and forrests where we played while a bit different are still there.

the front porch of my parents house is pretty much unchanged. Dry Creek is what it has always been and I miss it dearly.

Personally, I can't stand the State of Texas. I lived there before my son was born and didn't like it one bit. I hope to never visit that state again. However, I like my posting friends who are from Texas.

Bro. Rico,

I have been trying to figure out why you couldn't stand the State
of Texas. It finally dawned on me that when someone receives a organ
transplant, sometimes that body rejects the organ. For whatever reason,
perhaps upknown. Since you can't stand the State of Texas, it rejected
you, a transplant!:ursofunny:ursofunny

A younger brother of ours had a kidney transplant in 1995. Both the
donor and recipient have done great. Of course both were native TEXANS.
They have thrieved well in this rich TEXAS soil. In Jan. 07, our youngest
sister had a bone marrow transplant, using her own Texas-grown stem
cells. She also has done great and continues to thrieve well in this rich
TEXAS soil. If you are thrieving well up there where you are, by all means
stay where God plants you and you should do well.

Blessings,

:D A lot of it had to do with the circumstances surrounding our ending up in Lubbock. We originally moved to a small town about 40 miles south of Lubbock, in with a friend of mine. That lasted until her daughter decided to show up unannounced and me, my wife (girlfriend at the time), and her mom got put out. With very little money, we ended up in Lubbock in the nastiest, most roach infested apartment I have ever seen. Anyway, we didn't stay long.

Sorry Bro. Rico, that is a bad memory. Would it really have mattered where you were at the time. Wherever it may have been, it would not be a "feel good' memory for any state in the Union. Wish some of us had known you, we could have made sure you had fond memories of Texas friends who are generous and kind:):)

Hey, I am from northshore New Orleans. My dh says... my wife is from Louisiana but she got here as fast as she could...:roseglasses of course, meaning his native Texas home.

Bro. Rico,

I'm just teasing you and believe me we know what is was to have
hard times when we were younger and first married. We all go though
those tough times. But God brought you all out and He brought us
out! God is GOOD!

Blessings, Brother!:friend

I have had a bad time with my apartment being broken into three times here in Texas. I am barely comfortable here.

Are you still living in that apartment? Sister, why don't you just move?
