Growing up as a young child i remember sitting in church listening to those sanctified hyms, that would just stir your soul, now a days you cant even understand the lyrics of christian music, same as worldy music, the music is so loud you cant even hear the words, you cant tell if it is a worldy song or a christian song, but give me that old " im a goin up younder song", songs that go to the deepest part of your heart and stirs the spirit of God within your being, so how can we glorify God in a song that we do not even know what they are saying, just the beat sounds good, now i know some songs that we heard in the old days that was called a worldy song, the music gave us a beat and now they are using it is christain songs, my question is this can you glorifiy God in the music you listen too?

thats what i am saying, as long as you can understand it , but yes if it glorifies God than i am sure it is a good song

How many young(er) people even hear a phrase like " im a goin up younder song" and relate to it? Likewise younger people are more likely to understand a song that goes "Jesus on the Cisco OSPF area 0 IP network, tell Him what you wannnnntttt..." then they are "Jesus on the mainline....".

its because people have compromised truth for lies, and will accept any form of worship, in the songs. that the beats and the rythms have them deceived and mesmorized, is it just a emotional frenzie, or it is a real touch of the Holyghost,

Yes, I can! and I have all types. Very, very little southern gospel...but never the less, I do have some...
There was a pastoring friend of ours who had a young man visit his church. This boy was a rapper. He enjoyed writing rap songs...music, lyrics...that's what he did... He came to church and got saved.... He began to write rap songs about Christ and about the change in his life.... That's what he knew....Do I think Christ was offended? By no means NO.... Was he pleased? I am sure God's okay with that!
I grew up singing out of the brown song books with the gold lettering! LOL I remember my mother not wanting us to listen to CARMEN because he was so worldly.... But if it is a positive message... if it encourages someone and if it's a testimony or witness to God, then what's wrong with it?..

are you asking a question?
i think God can use modern music to touch people's lives. I have been told that MANY of our "old hymns" are nothing more than beer-drinking bar songs of "yonder years" with Christian lyrics.
Or maybe I heard this about our sacred Christmas carols.... Either way God can still be glorified.
It's a matter of the heart.

Sis, I understand what you are saying to a point and my favorite
songs are the hynms of the church too. however, bear in mind that
music is ever evolving. i remember as a child when lanny wolfe was
bigtime. some of the old timers at that time thought his music was
worldly. I heard preachers say that with my own ears. NOW
his music is VERY MILD!
Back in old days of Pentecost, many preachers wouldn't allow
drum sets in the church. they thought it was VERY worldly! I
know that for a fact. before that, some wouldn't allow
electric intruments in the church. If it wasn't acoustic it wasn't
allowed. if electricity ran thru it and it was amplified, it was
of the devil.
There are churches that have split over the hynms of the church.
at one time, "take my hand precious lord" was banned from
many churches because it was considered " the Blues' . now
that same song is thought of as 'sacred.
I am from nearby where the song "goin up yonder" was birthed
by Edwin Hawkins. that song along with "O happy day" and all of his
music was considered very worldly even by many black churches. now
those same songs are okay.
I could go on and on with examples. what am I saying? hang tight.
The style will change and what seems bad now, something else will
come along and will seem worse and the former music will become
sacred music lol

oh mark i do agree, it is a sad thing that we have allowed the music of the world to come in, i am not saying the drums and the guitar and other things are bad, i am saying that some of the other music like the hiphop coming in slowly, it scares me, i went to a music fest and i was so disappointed because they had fog machines and colored lights, i felt like i was in the CLUB, if ya know what i mean, and i looked over to a few pentecostal girls and they were getting down i could not beleive it, so what i am saying is that we are allowing this kinda a stuff to enter the pentecostal church so we can have a turnout, it should not be, what is next---

hip hop is demonic! check out "the truth about hip hop". it's a video series. what en eye opener! I don't mind fog and lights for a talent show but not for a church service. some are trying to replace the real anointing with gimicks

i know - i already looked it up. graig lewis- but this was not a talent show this was a music fest, this thing with music opened my eyes more, i am real strict what my kids bring into this house, it all carries a spirit, and i definently hate the gimicks, it is of the debil---we cannot allow this to become part of the church,

Fact is there is always going to be a music dis-connect from one generation to the next. I remember listening to Russ Taff Forgiven and that was "way out there." Now it sounds like bad disco music. BUT there is something to be said for what is a "song of Zion" and what is not. And some seem to forget that Satan was Lucifer the music/worship leader. There can be no doubt that music can be used to elevate satanic influence and even worship.
For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us [required of us] mirth, [saying], Sing us [one] of the songs of Zion. - Psa 137:3 KJV
And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. - Isa 35:10 KJV

I love old hymns and some of the contemporary worship stuff is ok, especially the anthem type songs. But as a general rule I'm not much into Christian/church music.
I will say this. In the last two or three years it has been secular music that has connected me to God. Coldplay, U2, and Lifehouse especially. It may sound odd to some of you but there have been several times that I've had to pull over to the side of the road because of the presence of God and the tears in my eyes as I experienced God through the music and lyrics of various secular songs. My steering wheel has felt the wetness of my tears and heard the many tongues I've spoken as God taught me something or comforted me through 'secular' music. Many secular artists are people of faith and express their faith in their music. You just have to be open to it and listen for it.
As I'm in seminary and hear profs say that speaking in tongues is not biblical and they 'prove' it through scripture I can only shake my head and know they're wrong because of my own experience. The same thing here. I know people think secular music is all bad. But you're wrong. I know because I have experienced God using it to touch my life.
Seems to me that we should try to figure out a way to use these artistic expressions of God and biblical truth as a bridge to unbelievers rather than build yet another unnecessary wall between us and the world we're called to minister to.
I think we really limit our experience with God when we try to say He can only be found in hymns and praise songs. I look for God in all the music I listen to regardless of whether it's Christian, country, rock and roll, soul, rap, or any other type of music. He's gonna find a way to make Himself known in any way possible. I believe that includes "worldly" music.

Apomo, God truly is everywhere. It's a shame that we've somehow managed to get this notion that He only lives in the church house.

Does anybody remember the days when Petra would send you to hell??
I am a singer...I LOVE music...and I see both sides. My hubby said something profound about music the other day. We were discussing the old hymns (most churches don't even use the songbook anymore) and the new worship songs. I expressed my approval of both and so did he, but he went on to say that while he loves the traditional hymns...he likes worship choruses better because they're usually song from you directly to God. i.e. "Here I am to worship"...
I am not a big hip hop fan, but I do think that God can work thru it. It all depends if I'm willing to accept it.
I too have been to the music fest and I LOVE the lights and fog machine...however, I think we must be careful we aren't trying to substitute...but that can be said for alot of things we are adding into the church scene.
Oh well, my two cents worth...

Oh Sister, don't try to be logical about this, it is sooo much more fun to predict gloom and doom and project your own likes and dislikes onto the subject and somehow think you have the mind of God... :winkgrin
That being said, I agree with you. :iagree

I was raised on southern gospel....didnt know there was anything "Christian" other than southern gospel....I remember my grandmother gave me a Chris Rice cassette tape and I was like OMG I'M GOING TO HELL...I hid it under my matress like some guys hide porn...lol.But my music tastes are wide ranging...southern gospel is ok but I wont go spend money on it...but I will go to concerts and I will worship if its being played or sang...I like Third Day, Casting Crowns, Mercy Me, Selah, Delierious, Pocket Full Of Rocks...ect....used to listen to the Hinsons and actually like them.I listen to what puts me in tune with God...what gets me meditating on His goodness...as far as the "old" stuff....nothing can hold a candle to Bro. Murril Euing*I think I just butchered his name* stepping to the mike with that old song book and singing The Old Account Was Settled....such annointing!Fast songs and slow songs....I've heard what sounds like a slow choir back up some of the raunchiest and vulgar lyrics imaginable with non christian singers....style is just preference....you wanna hash in out about style of music take the book of psalms to the original Hebrew.lol
