An Alabama pastor is looking for a church home – and he’ll go to the highest bidder on eBay.
CBS-42 TV in Birmingham, Ala., reported that Pastor Chad Smith put himself and his family on eBay as he looks for a new church congregation. “We’ve gotten quite a few e-mails just asking, you know, ‘Are you as crazy as we think you are?’ I say, ‘Yeah, we are,’” Smith told reporters.
Smith and his wife, a woman’s ministry leader, are looking for a nondenominational church home but have found the competition tough. More than 300 pastors applied for the last job Smith was interested in, and he sees the eBay tactic as something that will set him apart.
A bit of a renegade and a self-proclaimed out-of-the-box pastor, Smith has no shortage of tattoos and rides a Harley Davidson, but he promises dynamic preaching and leadership. “I bring a lot of humor,” he said. “I’m a visionary preacher, so I can change the way I bring the message. I don’t change the message.”
Though eBay bidding started at a dollar, Smith set a reserve price that is a reasonable yearly salary.
“We're not in it for the money,” he said. “We're in it to help people and to reach communities. That's what we strive for.”
The auction began Monday, and interested churches have until 10:22 p.m. EDT Thursday, July 17, to make a bid. Contact information is available on the family’s eBay listing page.
