Are any of you having an issue with a lot of gnats in your home? It seems like they are really bad this year around here. Any suggestions on how to get rid of them?

Yep - peppermint oil.

I had some peppermint oil left from when I used it to get rid of ants and thought I'd give it a try.

I put a few drops around the area in the kitchen where the gnats seemed to be the most and they were gone within a day. Plus, the kitchen smelled pretty good!

Cool. Never heard that. I had them last year pretty badly, but knock on wood, I haven't been bothered with them this summer.

Peppermint oil? Hmmmmm. Never heard of that before. I wonder if putting a dish of starlight mints in every room would help? Well, my kids would probly want to eat them all up, so maybe I will look around for some of that oil. Where can I get some?

I bought mine at Michael's craft store (supplies to make candy). I'm not sure if just peppermint flavoring would work too or not.

Yes. Bathe at least once a week and get yourself one of those flea and tick collars...

Or catch about 1000 frogs and put them in strategic places in the house.....

What about moths??? They are driving me crazy, they are around my porch light and when I try to go in my front door at night, it is like entering a combat zone, duck & cover! I have never seen it like this before this year!

You must be in West Texas!!! LOL

I remember going out there and staying with some preacher friends of ours.. we were staying in their camper... We had been walking around outside talking and as I went to go into the camper for church I go to open the door and there is this black thing about 5 inches round and huge at the top of my door... Talk about a shouting spell in the church parking lot yea!!!!!

Central TX, in the country, outside of Austin. Ours are tiny, and it's not that bad, really. Not an infestation. We see one in the house every few weeks or so. But they say the small ones pack more punch in their sting than the bigger ones. I dunno. My son's been stung twice, but he'd have to find a big one to compare stings. Not sure he'd be interested! ;)

We had a problem earlier in the summer with Gnats. We tried several things- to no avail. Then -we took the pot plants outside, covered up the fruit that was on the counter, and in about 3 days there were no more gnats. The pot plants are still outside.

I read that three times. And almost died on the popcorn I was eating.

I might have had some friends at some time in my life who really *did* have pot plants....and for some reason my mind went there and I didn't even think twice. Then I looked at where I am..and looked again..and choked..and the third time realized what she meant.

I hope the Drug Enforcement Agency isn't lurking tonight. Someone just might get a 2:00 am wake up call! (Or maybe from Cheech and Chong!)

couple of questions on the gnat subject...


1. How do you use, apply, whatever...Peppermint Oil?

2. Does anyone have birds and notice an increase in small gnats after getting birds? I thought one time I read that you can get a cheap batch of bird seed that has bugs...small gnat like bugs...Anyone else know anything about this? I recently acquired 2 birds and bought new bird seed...I wonder if that is where my gnats are coming from...I cannot find a source anywhere else and they are driving me CRAZY.

By the way....."neighbor to the east". YOU ARE A JINX! LOL I DIDN"T have gnats at all! Then you ask this question...guess what? Decorating a birthday cake today and low and behold.....A GNAT! You SPOKE IT!!! LOL

My porch light is on a motion sensor, and since I have to go up steps to my front door, and I have the grace of a water-buffalo, I'd rather not experience a broken ankle or another torn ligament. :tease
