A friend from work asked me friday night did I want ride with him to the fiddler's convention in Atmore,AL ? I took him up on his invitation.
While I was the convention a banjo played named Winky Hicks whom I knew asked me to play upright bass behind him in the banjo contest.
An older gentlemen played the guitar,and I played upright bass behind Winky and he won second place in the banjo contest.
We played Rueben's train and The Little Footprints in the snow.

These videos were done after Flatt and Scruggs busted up.
Your grandfather was Jake Tullock better known as Cousin Jake was a wonderful upright bass player.
There are vidoes on You-Tube with you grandfather on them. Cousin Jake and his style of playing are an influence of mine.
Your grandfather was a great musician.
Btw where is his bass-fiddle now,hopefully it's in his family ?

To be honest not sure where the bass is now. I think that Marty Stuart owns it. I believe he did at one time or another. When he got out of showbiz my father was still young enough. My father was in college then or just out ot college. There are alot of things that collectors want that we don't have. Most of the items that would be worth something is already owned by collectors. Marty has a TON of Cuz Jake stuff. Also a lot of stuff that made it through the old days are either at the Hall of Fame in Nashville or there is a traveling show of shorts that was at the Center for Performing arts in Nashville and it travels all around. The bass might be there because most of that traveling stuff is owned by Marty Stuart.

That version of Life's Railroad to heaven was not strictly bluegrass,hence the drums.Here is a killer version of Amazing Grace.
ttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZJ-kLKut9E
I had to Google the lyrics for Mountain Railroad.
I just don't remember some of these verses but it's been 50 years or so since we sang it as a congregational song.
LIFE'S RAILWAY TO HEAVEN
Life is like a mountain railroad, with an engineer that’s brave;
We must make the run successful, from the cradle to the grave;
Watch the curves, the fills, the tunnels; never falter, never quail;
Keep your hand upon the throttle, and your eye upon the rail.
Bless'd Savior, Thou wilt guide us,
Till we reach that blissful shore;
Where the angels wait to join us
In Thy praise forevermore.
You will roll up grades of trial; you will cross the bridge of strife;
See that Christ is your Conductor on this lightning train of life;
Always mindful of obstruction, do your duty, never fail;
Keep your hand upon the throttle, and your eye upon the rail.
Bless'd Savior, Thou wilt guide us,
Till we reach that blissful shore;
Where the angels wait to join us
In Thy praise forevermore.
You will often find obstructions; look for storms of wind and rain;
On a fill, or curve, or trestle, they will almost ditch your train;
Put your trust alone in Jesus; never falter, never fail;
Keep your hand upon the throttle, and your eye upon the rail.
Bless'd Savior, Thou wilt guide us,
Till we reach that blissful shore;
Where the angels wait to join us
In Thy praise forevermore.
As you roll across the trestle, spanning Jordan’s swelling tide,
You behold the Union Depot into which your train will glide;
There you’ll meet the Superintendent, God the Father, God the Son,
With the hearty, joyous, plaudit, “Weary pilgrim, welcome home!”
Bless'd Savior, Thou wilt guide us,
Till we reach that blissful shore;
Where the angels wait to join us
In Thy praise forevermore.

... Beautiful song, thank you very much for posting it, just couple of days ago, I was reading the book of John when I run into the passage that covers the encounter. Each and every time I go over this part, I get the goose bumps, it can't be any more powerful than it already is:
'Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, 'Please give me a drink,' you would have been the one to ask him, and he would have given you living water." -John 4:10- '
...just imagine and picture being in His Presence and being asked to give Him water to drink. At times I feel so miserable for not having been born when He walk among men.

Bro. Sam,
I remembered that song also and really liked it. It just seems that
things should not always be one-sided. If I told my husband of 49
years that I loved Him each day and he never told me he loved me
in return, I would wonder and could become offended! If we love
God the way we say we do, there will be some expressing of that
love. He should be first, above all other loves! If we love Him with
all of our heart, soul, mind and strength, He WILL be first. I love HIM
because HE first loved me! We don't even know how to love until we
find HIM! Greater love hath no one ever known, like unto the LOVE
of Christ shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost (Spirit). It is
the LOVE of THE FATHER!!

Question: What was Elvis Presley's First Record?
Answer: Elvis' first record was a Sun label single with "That's All Right" backed by "Blue Moon of Kentucky." The single was recorded in 1954 and brought Elvis national attention.
I'm about 20-22 miles from Kentucky.

I live in Jackson but the facility is in Mckenzie, Tennessee. I doubt we will be dealing much with the judicial system due to the fact that we are a for profit corporation. Most offenders end up in state funded non profit agencies.

Interesting, Scott. I too have "beheld" certain people who were particularly talented, or particularly beautiful, or particularly prosperous, or particularly WHATEVER, and noticed how I (and everyone else) tended to automatically prefer them or care about them more than others. Yet God does not. The diseased, hopeless child in Africa that no one wants is just as valuable. Seems the book of James even slaps us upside the head concerning giving a front row seat to the "rich" and asks, "Are not these the ones who oppress you in the world?"
[BTW, it's a stretch, but for the above reason, I quit wearing suits or ties in church, because I had been merely trying to acquire a kind of cheap respectability, meaning, to copy the "look" of (what?) bankers, lawyers, businessmen of the world. Of course, a guy gets nowhere with this attitude. And so be it!]

I found some words for Great Speckled Bird.
It's been around for some time and different folks sing it a little differently.
This is based on Jeremiah 12:9 from the KJV. Other versions have a different reading. Here is the KJV:
"Mine heritage is unto me as a speckled bird, the birds round about are against her;"
Great Speckled Bird
1.What a beautiful thought I am thinking
Concerning that great speckled bird
Remember her name is recorded
On the pages of God's Holy Word.
2. All the other birds are flocking 'round her
She is so despised by the squad
The great speckled bird in the Bible
Representing that great church of God.
3. I am glad I have learned of her meekness
I am proud that my name is on her book
For I want to be one never fearing
On the face of my Savior to look.
4. All the other churches are against her
They envy her glory and fame
They hate her because she is chosen
And has not denied Jesus' name.
5. Desiring to lower her standard
They watch every move that she makes
They long to find fault with her teachings
But really they find no mistake.
6. She is spreading her wings for a journey
She's going to take by and by
When the trumpet shall sound in the morning
She will rise and go up in the sky.
7. In the presence of all her despisers
With a song never uttered before
She will rise and be gone in a moment
Till the great tribulation is o'er.
8. When He cometh descending from heaven
On the clouds as He writes in His Word
I'll be joyfully carried to meet Him
On the wings of that great speckled bird.

He Reached Down
by Iris Dement
(Verse 1)
A certain man one day did go down to Jericho
Fallin’ among thieves along the way
Well they stripped him then they fled
Leaving him for dead
Lying on the side of the road
And then the priest came passing by
He crossed over to the other side
Then the Levite came and he did just the same
When the Samaritan heard his cry
He just could not pass on by
He dressed his wounds and he carried to the nearest inn
(Chorus)
Well he reached down, he reached down
He got right there on the ground
He reached down, he reached down
And he touched the pain
He paid the keeper the amount that was due
If you need more he said I’m good for that too
He reached down, he reached down
And he touched the pain
(Verse 2)
And then the Scribes in the Pharicese
Brought the adultress in for Jesus to see
Lord, she’s sinned, now the law says she must be stoned
If there’s a one of you that’s without sin
Said you can cast the first stone in
One by one they left, leaving Jesus and the woman alone
< Sing Chorus >
Well no accusers are left that I see
And Woman, neither do I condemn thee
He reached down, he reached down
And he touched the pain
< Guitar Solo >
(Verse 3)
In the (Bible??) a story is told
About a traveler at the end of life’s road
He’s at the gates of the Kingdom and the Master says “Come on in”
For I was hungry and you gave me meat
I was cold you put shoes on my feet
When I was in prison there was you who come to see about me
(Chorus – Modified)
Well you reached down, you reached down
You got right there on the ground
You reached down, you reached down
And you touched my pain
When you’re debted to the least of these
He said you were doin’ it unto me
You reached down, you reached down
And you touched my pain
Well he reached down, he reached down
And he touched the pain
