What about the Jewish holidays?
Day of Pentecost?
Incredible that a company is making a religous Holiday a paid Holiday when that religion represents less than one half of one percent of the population of the USA.
That would be like making the first night of the UPC General Conference a paid Holiday at some large Corporation because a handful of UPC people work for them.

What you are failing to realize is that this is just at the Shelbyville plant and at that plant the muslims represent 700 out of 1200 employees. Sept 1 or Oct. 1.... I am sure the heathens (formerly called Christians or Agnostics or Atheists) are just as pleased as punch to have the one day off as the other.

Why would this be a problem? Pagan celebrations are already found on most “Christian” calendars. They just renamed them “Christmas” and “Easter.” :aaa

I hate chickens. Wouldn't hurt my feelings if someone came by and stole ours. They are nasty and stupid! How can a company change a national holiday? Do they have a union?
I know, I know, read the article Cindy. argh!!!!
Disclaimer: If you do come by to steal our chickens don't blame me if you get shot!!!!!!!!!!! And our puppy Emily lives next door she might take exception to you stealing the chickens too. BTW she is a ST. Bernard and able to leap tall people in a single bound, and squash them.

It was part of a bargaining agreement with the union. That explains it. Muslims make up a majority of the work force. Democracy in action.

I am not a huge fan of PETA but read this and you will see how Tyson needs to improve their procedures:
http://getactive.peta.org/campaign/tortured_by_tyson
Also, check out:
http://www.torturedbytyson.com/
I WILL NOT BUY TYSON FOODS IN THE STORES and I am trying to completely avoid eating chicken. IF more people stop buying TYSON, that might get their attention.
Phil Jones,
I was aware that the new Holiday was part of the new union agreement. I sitll thought it was a bad precedent to set.
If the Tyson plant were in Alexandria Lousiana and 700 POA members worked there I would still think it would be bad policy to delete Labor day as a Holiday and make one day of BOTT one.

Here's an idea.
Our company has one floating holiday as a part of our benefits. You choose what holiday that is personal for you and take your floating holiday on that day.
All the others are the national holidays that America celebrate.

CC, speaking from an entirely legal and technical angle, POA would already likely have several holidays (Holy Days)...Christmas, Easter..
I don't like this, but given our current system it would probably be unavoidable with a union at a plant that is so overwhelmingly Muslim.
It is interesting that a town as small as Shelbyville would have a Muslim population large enough for there to be 700 employees at Tyson.
I wonder if there has been some sort of organizational effort by Muslims to populate this town.

I had that at a job I was at for ten years.
It was called a personal day as well as stat holidays & my vacation time.
When the company closed down I was up to two personal days a year!

I was wondering the same thing! How did that happen? Is half of Shelbyville Muslim, or does the factory just attract Muslims for some reason? The Muslim holiday will make it even more attractive for other Muslims to join them.
I'm just surprised that so many Muslims work at one place here in the USA!

Ive been screaming about this for a couple years. Muslims in this nation are growing numerically but they already have large lobbying groups. They got their equivalent of the ACLU and the NAACP. Just like the small gay community has a LARGE and powerful agenda driven activist group so do the Muslims. People need to wake up or American will be looking like Britain and the rest of Europe and eventually Lebanon

Yes, Prax, but the basis for and history of these Holidays are clearly religious in nature. Look, I don't like it any more than the rest, but with the way our country is, things like that are almost ineveitable.

A group of Somali clerics want a Muslim prayer room to be built at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Airport officials say they will consider setting aside a private area for prayer and meditation since other airports have “meditation rooms” used for prayers or by passengers who simply need quiet time. (Breitbart)
If this is a meditation room for any people of any and all religions, I have no problem with it. However, if the airport builds a prayer room for Muslims ONLY, this is a step in the wrong direction. No religion should have preference over another. (emphasis mine)

Israel's Ben-Gurion Airport is to construct an Islamic prayer room for the first time as part of efforts to improve relations with Muslim travellers.
For years, Muslim travellers, including Israeli Arabs, have complained that Israel's main airport, with its stringent security checks and lack of Arabic signs, has treated them poorly, and sometimes even in a humiliating fashion.
Israeli Arabs make up about 20 percent of the Jewish state's population of some 7 million people.

The prayer rooms are already available to Islamic employees. Would a company be so accommodating if a Christian requested a prayer room??? We are told to "pray always"...I think every time the Islamic folks ask for a prayer room, the Christians should too....Or maybe they will pray in the same room. Any thoughts on this?

Exactly.
Also don't forget that Islam is being pushed in a huge way by Saudi Arabian oil money.
Ironically much of the money we spend at the gas pump is coming back to America both in the form of Arab ownership of much of our major commercial real estate but also in the form of Islamic "evangelism".
I read in some major credible publication sometime in the last year that Saudi Arabis is spending millions upon millions of dollars to promote their version of Islam (which coindently is one of the most conservative and radical) in America.

If Christians were to use the same prayer as these Muslims room, I'm sure some Muslims would protest... saying we're "defiling" their prayer room.
But indeed, if Christians were the ones who had demanded, and received a Christian prayer, I'm sure groups like the ACLU would have something to say about it.

Big time Saudi money and I would not be surprised if Iranian money is making it in somehow.
Wahabi is the most conservative and the one that supports Sharia
How about this?
NEW YORK — A Muslim group, in collaboration with a Brooklyn imam once investigated as a possible co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, paid $48,000 to run Islamic advertisements on the city's subway cars this September.
But the effort to plaster 1,000 subway cars with pro-Islamic messages has given new life to the controversy that has surrounded the radical imam, Siraj Wahhaj, who is promoting the campaign.
"In time, this so-called democracy will crumble, and there will be nothing, and the only thing that will remain will be Islam," Wahhaj was quoted as saying in one of his sermons.

Tyson also makes and packages Kroger chicken.
It supplies all Yum! Brands chains that use chicken (including KFC and Taco Bell), as well as McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Wal-Mart, Kroger, Costco, IGA, Beef O'Brady's, small restaurant businesses, and prisons.
I also believe they package for Save A Lot generic but not for sure...
