Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was jailed Thursday for a bond violation in his perjury case, his pleas for leniency rejected by a judge who made it clear the mayor would get no special treatment.

Kilpatrick, charged with perjury and other felonies over his testimony in a civil trial, apologized and acknowledged that he made a mistake when he visited Windsor, Ontario, minutes away from Detroit, for city business last month. But District Judge Ronald Giles was not moved, saying he needed to treat the mayor like any other defendant.

The downward spiral continues...

Sad to see.

When I heard about this, I thought, "How can he be Mayor and in jail at the same time?"

Does anyone know how they are going to handle this?

I wish he had just resigned a long time ago.

What are they going to do about the rest of Detroit? LOL

The Deputy Mayor is handling the city's business.

Regarding the Mayor, he is disgaceful and should have resigned but lo, he is too stubborn. Perhaps he plans to expense his defense as being work related. The Governor, who has the authority to remove him from office is playing coward. She is hiding out.

Drummerboy, you nailed this completely. Good summary :)

Personally, I think we should throw the mayor of Detroit and Carty Finkbeiner, mayor of Toledo, into the same jail cell. Those two deserve each other!

So the way things are going now.... it looks like he's going to end up spending ton of money enrichng his lawyers, get convicted anyway, get thrown in prison, lose his law license, humiliate his family... and all this precipitated by his indiscretions with a female staff member.

This guy had so much promise, so much potential, and its all blowing up in his face royally. Very sad to see.

drummerboy,

I read that there was no deputy mayor right now because he had accepted another position with the city but that the judge split the Mayor's duties between two other positions.

What a terrible role model this Mayor is. If he truly cared about Detroit he would resign since he really can't effectively govern with all of the dirt around him.

That mayor was a mess. The more I learned about his story the more dumbstruck I was. He was a young, immature brat who seemed to think he was in a Godfather movie or something. They had a blatant disregard for the law and there is a very good chance that his offenses and abuses include everything up to murder.

If he resigns he'd have less leverage when it comes to a plea deal with prosecutors....

Plus, if he resigns he loses his paycheck, which is now probably all going to his lawyers anyway.

It's only getting worse for the Detroit Mayor. Now he has been charged with two more felonies.

Wow!

Yes, this story has it all...including a dead stripper who was set to testify against his wife. I am amazed at how he was able to be so lawless. He was a priveleged kid who appeared to want to be a mayor, thug, and Godfather all at once.

Magistrate sets $25,000 bond for Kilpatrick on cop-assault charges

Attorney General Cox says mayor assaulted, obstructed two officersstrate Renee McDuffee of the 36th District Court ordered the mayor must post 10% of a $25,000 bond, or $2,500 for release on the new charges.

A prosecutor with the Michigan Attorney General's office had asked McDuffee that the mayor be forbidden from having any contact with witnesses in both criminal cases against him.
McDuffee said she could only impose conditions on the case before her, the four assault charges stemming from an altercation with Wayne County law enforcement officers trying to serve a subpoena.
