This is a sad note.
BEIJING (AP) - A Chinese man stabbed the in-laws of the U.S. Olympic men's volleyball coach, killing one and injuring the other while they visited a Beijing tourist site near the main venue where Olympic competitions began Saturday, officials said.

The victims were Todd and Barbara Bachman, parents of former Olympian Elisabeth Bachman who is married to men's volleyball coach Hugh McCutcheon. Bachman's father was killed.
The assailant also stabbed and injured a Chinese tour guide with the Americans. He then committed suicide by throwing himself off a 130-foot-high balcony of the ancient landmark the Americans were visiting, the 13th century Drum Tower, the official Xinhua News Agency reported

BEIJING (AP) - Michael Phelps opened his quest to win eight gold medals by qualifying 1.44 seconds faster than his rivals with an Olympic-record time in the 400-meter individual medley preliminaries Saturday night.
The American won his heat in 4 minutes, 7.82 seconds - 0.44 second better than his gold-medal-winning time four years ago in Athens. Phelps was under his world-record pace after 150 meters of the four-stroke race, but eased off to save something for Sunday morning's final.

Zagunis, the 2004 saber champion, took the gold with a 15-8 victory over Sada Jacobson, who took the silver. Becca Ward took the bronze.

So should Mark Spitz be upset that he wasn't invited to the Olympics or should he have just got himself a plane ticket and shown up there? He aged quite well!!!!!

I understand his point, but he almost sounds whiny.

Yeah he might have, but I think he has a point and I really wish he was included.

Mark Spitz was such a house hold name when I was growing up, it's a shame not to have him there.

He does look good for his age though :D

I thought it was great too and it had to make the athletics feel proud that he thought enough of them to come cheer them on!!!

Not to mention it probably was a political move too w/China.

I watch him leaving the men's basketball game and he was pointing and waving at the girl's basketball team as he was descending the steps - - they were all waving back and smiling!

Looks like Kissinger was there too!

As well as Vladimir Putin, they were all standing in the band stands like regular folk!

I too thought it must have been extremely encouraging and motivating for the USA teams to see their President there cheering them on-I just feel so proud of him for being there.

Well, it would have been pretty cool if Mark had been there to present him with his 8th medal if and when that happens.

8,000 - 10,000 calories a day is the norm for Michael Phelps to eat per day!

Of course, he swims five hours a day to burn that all off too - said he can't get past 200 lbs.
