A great sandwich starts with really good bread, excellent quality meats (main ingredient), really tasty cheese, and ends with whatever condiments you like.
For me one of my favorites it is a toasted thick slice of bread topped with thinly sliced smoked ham that has been heated up in a skillet, then topped with a fried egg, smoked provolone or swiss cheese, topped off with slices of onion, tomato, and some leaf lettuce. I always like a good mayo and horseradish too.
but this is not just for breakfast.
one of my altime top of the list favorites is a Cuban. Never have I had one that tastes like they do in Tampa, Fl though. I really need to get a good Cuban bread recipe and try making it myself. I love those sandwiches. From the toasted crunchy bread, which is really good toasted with butter all by itself, right down to the ham and pork (I know same animal just different cut) and the cheese, mustard and pickle. This sandwhich is to die for.

Mustard and sharp chedder cheese.
Extra sharp white cheddar. I am getting to be a food snob. I want natural and organic leave out the dyes and flavorings, stop killing me with the pesticides and hormones.
Avocado! My dh and I enjoy this sandwich. Yes, Jax, good bread!
Good Rye or dark grainy bread, avocado, tomatoes, sliced Havarti cheese, raw cole slaw mix, spicy mustard, wasabi, peppered turkey... on the side a few olives, pickles, fruit, or any other salad mix vegetables you have in frig... we also like canned pickled beets on the side.

I agree! We have switched to the white cheddar and pretty much organic on most of our foods and everyone says there is no difference but it is indeed remarkable the difference and the much better taste! We have a place here called Central Market and they have the best of the best and wow!

I am really loving organic and natural foods and my are too. Much more flavor
When I think about it organic is how my parents raised us. We had a farm and we grew our own veggies and a lot of times our own meat. We never had paturized adn homogenized milks. Then came along "PROGRESS" and now we have more sickness and disease than Carter has liver pills. Cancer is out of control, heart disease, diabetes, and the list goes on. I say back to the REAL food and we might start seeing a difference in our kids health and our own.

What I love is well my fav is the same as Jax and thats a good cuban but I havent been able to have a real one since I left Florida.... so next to that anything with I prefer white homemade bread but if I have to go with regular store bought it has to be the Sarah Lee Hoagie Rolls and then some thinly shaved turkey breast and then some sharp white cheddar toasted with lettuce tomato and if I have it Blue Plate mayo if not then some other type of lowfat mayo and sea salt and pepper... just a tad to bring alive the flavors and happy am I
If I am feeling like something really not healthy I will go to subway and get a meatball sub with a bag of cheetos and be a real happy person but I try not to splurge like that but once a month maybe!

I love Rye and Pumpernickel. My sister makes a honey wheat and oat bread that is really good. I can eat a whole loaf of it right out of the oven. Bread is one my weaknesses

You ask anyone here in AZ if they have ever had a Cuban and they look at you like you are nuts. Then you have to explain it is a SANDWICH.
That bread is soooooooooooooooooooooooo good.
My cuban friends would make a very similar sandwich on a round roll, same type dough just backed in a different shape, without toasting it and would call it a media noche. Their midnight snack.
They say the Cuban originated from the Cuban and Italian immigrants that pretty much founded Tampa area. They blended their cultures and came up with that sandwich. Man it is GOOOOOOOD no matter how it started.

Sharp cheddar and spicy mustard. My food has to have a strong flavor since I have virtually no sense of smell.

to echo the sentiments of others, I think it starts with good bread. Crisp lettuce makes a difference too!
Sometimes, a great sandwich is great because of what you leave out.
Hold the mayo please!

I am not a huge sandwich person, but there is a great deli here calles "Nicks" and if I am going to have one, that where I get the meats and cheeses...
However all this talk of cubans (I have never had one) reminds me of the MMM MMM GOOOD Tortas back home in San Diego... You can't get them back here... The yummy torta roll, fresh grilled carne asada meat, cilantro, guacamole, sour cream, lettuce, tomato.....
There's no place like home...there's no place like home.... there's no place like home....

I've never heard of cranberry sauce on a turkey sandwich, but it actually sounds good!
Think I'll try it.

Me too!
What we do though is grill the sandwich like a grilled cheese sandwich.
Stack turkey, bacon and cheese on bread - grill it on both sides, then top with lettuce, tomato and mayo. Tastes completely different than just a turkey sandwich!
I also make a cranberry relish and that's served on the side!

A new place here called Jimmy Johns has some killer sandwiches. Very tasty bread!!!I'm glad to hear you say this. The only person I know who has eaten there is my son Zac and he didn't like it at all. His roast beef was really fatty and he is totally grossed out by fat.

I love banana sandwiches too...just like your mother! I also like crushed pineapple (drained of course) sandwiches. I even got my youngest granddaughter to eat a pineapple sandwich and after a little coaxing, she ate it and loved it.
My favorite is a sloppy roast beef and gravy Poboy. Yummy.
