View Full Version : United States Men Beat Frogs For Gold!!!
The USA men who were underdogs to the vaunted French 4x100 swimming relay team pulled off an upset tonight in the Olympics and won the Gold medal.
In addition to the Gold Medal they broke all prevoius world records for that event.
The best part is that when one of the French swimmers was asked awhile back about facing the Americans in this event at the Olympics he stated that the Americans were why they were coming to the Olympics and that the French team was going to crush the Americans!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!

CC1 is a great guy, but the title he put on this thread is classless, tasteless, and ignorant. (Deacon's use of "Frenchie" isn't much better.)
On this side of the border, the epithet that he used is about as acceptable as the "N" word is on your side.
Maybe we could compromise and retitle the thread "Barnyard Squabble: American Pigs Beat Frogs For Gold." (Unless you might find that offensive.)

MapleLimb,
According to the Word Detective below is the origins of the term "frogs" referring to the French;
Frog" was indeed at one time a popular derogatory term for a French person, though it didn't start out quite that way. Originally (around 1330), "frog" was applied by Britons to almost any group they found objectionable, and was aimed at both Jesuits and the Dutch before it was decided in the late 18th century that the French, with whom England was then at war, were the real "frogs." The rationale for the term, to the extent one is ever really needed in such cases, was the French consumption of frogs' legs (anathema to the beef-loving British), as well as the presence of frogs on the coat of arms of the city of Paris. "Frog" is still used as an insult, especially in Britain, but many other once-popular anti-French coinages are rarely heard today, including "French pox" (syphilis), "French leave" (desertion from one's post in wartime), and simply "French" (foul language, as in the apologetic phrase "Pardon my French" offered after swearing).
Based on the above my respone to your post is;
Pardon my French!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to assume that you're completely ignorant in your use of the term "frog". You should consider your words and their meaning before you hit the keyboard. This is definitely a derogatory term - especially in the context you used it.
It blows my mind how christians/pentecostals/apostolics can open their mouths to say things, or pick up a pen to write something, or hit the keys on a computer keyboard without engaging their brain AND heart about what they're communicating! Doesn't anyone follow WWJD - What Would Jesus Do/Say/Write...???? Or maybe their Jesus is a rude, uncouth, racist who cares about no one else except themselves and their "type"!

Well, I for one, had no idea Frog was a derogatory term. It's MUCH different than the "n" word, since the "n" word has absolutely NO place in the English language, whereas "frog" describes an amphibian.
Which is probably why I never would have thought of it as a derogatory term.
I suppose we should not refer to people as "work horses" or "old dogs" or "sly foxes".

Pardon my French! I used the term in a lighthearted derogatory way, not in any anger or hatred. I posted some research about the term and while it is indeed derogatory it is not in the same sense as the "n" word is to Blacks.
I do indeed like to poke fun at the French as the only folks in the world to exceed my own contry for a sense of ethnocentrism. Of course in the case of America we have reasons to be ethnocentric!
I do like the new French President but I am wondering just how long a conservative can last in a socialist atmosphere. I hope long enough to win the hearts and minds of enough of the public to continue his reforms to help France.

Only American arrogance would allow this thread to continue titled as it is. To equate "Frog" to "redneck" or "hillbilly" is to show a complete ignorance of the French culture. If there is an equivalent word, the "N' word is it. I have to say that I am with Maple on this one. If the word is legitimately used by many as a derogatory term, and our use hear is totally unecessary and gratuitous...it's probably not worth using. I'm not one to say that you have to be politically correct all the time, but at the same time I don't see the point of being politically incorrect just for the sake of doing it.
My opinion is that we should change it so that we do not offend anyone unnecessarily. Once again as a general rule, when I find out that a term is used by a lot of people as a derogatory term I tend to not use it.

I think original post, and the thread title, reflected a feeling of pro-American euphoria, (and some anti-French nationalism mixed in) that a lot of us felt when we saw how the race turned out.... but in a fun sort of way. The French had talked trash about our boys, and we beat them!.. and it felt good! We would have been happy just because America won, but the fact that the French had talked trash about our team just made it an even sweeter victory. So I think for a lot of us, it was an "in your face" moment, but in a competitive, fun, let's-go-USA kind of way... not in a mean-spirited kind of way.

The French and the English are still at odds many times in Canada.
I have my own frustrations but I don't use the term Frog as many find it offensive and racist. I can certainly understand how it would hurt a French speaking person. I've only met one lady who was not offended by it. She is a short little spitfire my mom worked with for many years. Everyone bought her frogs.. she had a huge collection in her work office. No one every called her a frog... but the running joke was to buy her something frog every time there was a special occasion.
That was a personal joke between friends and longtime coworkers though...
Canada has unique challenges... especially with some French in the province of Quebec wanting to separate etc... so it is very touchy up here.
