come on Esther, look around that site. It reminds me of the homeless guy on the street corner preaching the end of the world.
Just because a nut case agrees with me on some stuff, doesnt mean I am going to excuse them for being crazy.
and a big article bagging on Abe Lincoln? the guy has been dead for a hundred and forty seven years! good grief. what was the point of that?

do you think this is actully an important argument to make in Amareica right now? "Abe hated Jesus and other reason why you should listen to what I have to say"

How many times have we heard of Honest Abe and he is portrayed as almost American deity. He's very prominent in our history and had a profound effect. Not just some dead guy.

Yes, as an American deity. I wonder if people know he said this during his fourth debate with Stephen Douglas in 1858:
"I will say that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races, that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races from living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they can not so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race."
He told Horace Greeley that is he could save the Union by freeing the slaves he would do so; if he could save the Union by freeing no slave he would do that; and if he could save the Union by freeing some slaves and leaving other in bondage, he would do that too.

being a former history major, i do care about history.
the point here is you have a website out there trying to be an influence in American politics.
they have as a bullet point on their resume " we think Abraham Lincoln was the devil"
RD and PO, do either of you think this is the way to go about winning friends and influencing people? because from all I know about politics, that just dont seem like the way to go about your business.
here are the pionts of interest to me personally.
I agree with these folk in principle on a number of issues. On issues that i find important, I tend to want to win at the ballot box. winning at the ballot box becomes important. I dont want people who I agree with, doing things that will cause my side to loose.
Getting linked to the "Kooks that think Abraham Lincoln was the devil" doesnt help you win at the ballot box.
Guys, AL was responsible for more American deaths than any other person in history. He did not think black people were genetically equal to white people. (this would be the definition of a racist).
He is the only president to suspend (or come close to) suspending the constitution.
He in fact was known for not following up on promises.
He fired God only knows how many generals until he came up on a guy that would throw his own men away like so much trash....but won because he didnt mind playing a numbers game.
Would you like for me to go on? i could. I could also run down a few things he did well....
but. If I want to score political points, and get people to vote for my guy, I am NOT leading with "Abraham Lincoln didnt like Jesus"

I believe the site in question was responding to a comment made by Pat Buchanan. Sites like this sing basically to the choir. They are obviously doing some things for 'shock value' for the few outsiders that may visit.

I care because they set a precedent that we are paying for today!
How in the name of all that is good and holy can a "white" Christian look at a human being and say such garbage.
The Beecher Stowes went south and set up learning facilities, in the midst of persecution, to teach the poor black people how to read and assimilate in society.
How stupid that someone could read for his law degree OUT OF THE BIBLE and feel that way about flesh and blood that God made.
I cannot for the life of me fathom that. I can't reconcile my mind to it.
Have we any excuse to act like that was nothing after you read the book of Philemon? I say we don't.
We can call people "trash" and rightly so if they just won't try. The black people wanted a chance and "white" people saw no value.
While in the Illinois legislature Lincoln never challenged the anti-black legislation in that state. He voted against black suffrage and refused to sign a petition allowing black testimony in court. He was also a strong supporter of colonizing free blacks, convinced that they could never assimilate in American society. As president he urged the State Department to look into possible areas of settlement in such places as Haiti, Honduras, Liberia, Ecuador and the Amazon.
Today, we are still paying for that.

wonderful. you have a nice grasp of history. you also have a clear conscience. that is very nice. Now remind me of this precedent that AL set?
PO, in the world we live in, AL freed the slaves. no one thinks he was a modern day saint. I guess I am left wondering why you want to judge this man by todays standards when clearly on the subject of slavery he was a proressive for his era.
Thomas Jeffereson, refused to put the word "free" in the declaration of indepenance because he did not want to exclude black slaves from the idea that "all men are created equal" but he owned slaves. do we judge him by the standards of modernity? of course not.
you cannot take a man out of his era and judge him by a set of values that he has had no exposure to!
What ever AL was, both the good and the bad, has to be judged by the era in which he lived.
You said today that you might vote for Rudy G. you said your reasoning was because you were voting for President not for priest.
so excuse me if I am baffeled by this commitment to making sure everyone knows just how evil the 147year dead guy was.

You can't call him a progressive for his era unless he was setting slaves free for moral reasons. That is my opinion.
I am judging or rather evaluating him by the standards of his day more than ours. I am trying to reconcile these pictures of this tall man who walked miles to return a few pennies and wondering his thoughts on human flesh.
Wasn't there a difference in he and (I forgot his name. My mind is totally blank. The guy that would go out into the woods and pray after studying the Bible for his law practice and found truth. What was his name?) when studying the Bible for their law practices? Most certainly.
Rudy would be standing behind whatever law the Supreme Court has laid down, which is how he stands and lawfully he must, saying the states have the rights to make their own laws. Again, a little different, IMO.

AL was in fact considered a progressive. reinterpretting history based on your personal veiw, isnt valid.
however, this discussion was (from my perspetive) on the subject of this website, and the fact that while i agree in principle with them about hillary clinton, I dont want to associate myself with them (or my side of the political aisle) because of the extreme manner in which they approach other subjects.
I am sorry for not being clear about that. AL was demonized by these people. If they want to be taken seriously, that isnt something they should be doing... reguardless of the validity of the position, you dont do what they did.

LOL! Ferd, I just wanted to get that off my chest. I would have hated slavery and worked directly with Harriet Tubman.
Anyway, you are right about not aligning with the likes of Hillary. She is also ridiculous to try and impose additional hate crime laws. We already have laws that cover any violent crime. All this added stuff isn't necessary and is what really takes away from liberty.
"As the Constitution endures, persons of every generation can invoke it’s principles in their own search for greater freedom."

Think how things might have been if we looked at it like the Beecher Stowes. That is all I'm saying. How whites in the past behaved is irrelevant. It is this unwillingness of an entire segment of the AMERICAN population to forgive another segment that perpetuates this ongoing root of bitterness in the collective heart of the unforgiving segment.

Chancellor,
Did you ever think that the unforgiveness, which yes is wrong, is there because of how the past was dealt with. That's what I am trying to say.
No, we can't undo it, but I can express my opinion that it was wrong in the past. There were some that handled it better, but it was not enough - not enough!
And there isn't enough teaching in the Public School system to point out the ones that handled things right - it's always the wrong that is being looked at!

It doesn't matter: the choice not to forgive the past is what causes the root of bitterness. There will never be healing until there is forgiveness.
