He cites a 'lack of shared vision' on the future of the ministry, which he had handed over less than three years ago.
By Sam Quinones
October 26, 2008
"It is no secret to any of you that my son, Robert, and I have been struggling as we each have different ideas as to the direction and the vision for this ministry," his statement read.
"For this lack of shared vision and the jeopardy in which this is placing this entire ministry, it has become necessary for Robert and me to part ways."
Schuller said he was bringing in several guest pastors from around the country to preach during the show, which has been cut to half an hour in some markets since summer.
The decision marks a surprising reversal of the emotional moment when Schuller turned over the church ministries and the television program to his son during services at the Crystal Cathedral in January 2006.
At the time, though, he made it clear: "I am not retiring."
Robert A. Schuller's major challenge was attracting younger congregants and using the television program to build membership. It is unclear whether he achieved that.
"I wish I had an answer for you. I just don't know," said John Charles, a church spokesman. "I tried to get that question answered today and there's really no answer.
Robert A. Schuller, known to congregants as Robert II, had been groomed to take over for his father since 1996.
In chats on the church's website, participants wondered what happened to the younger Schuller.
"Has he been on a missionary trip or something?" one chatter wrote.
"Enough already. Where is RAS?" wrote another. "All administrators and pastors -- please be open with your church members."

Well, Robert Schuller is not UPC.
The Church doesn't have to go to his son.

That means he's going to be pastoring for another 50 years.

WRONG. His son will remain as Pastor but not as speaker. Robert disagrees with the direction he was taking the church and removed him from leading or speaking at the televised services. They will be getting guest speakers to appear

That is interesting. I'm sure that there is a very complicated back story that we'll never know. The Crystal Cathedral is a huge enterprise and those things can get really complicated and involve the influence of people that we don't know anything about.

That would probably empty out the Cathedral. :)
I wonder though if it is the opposite. I saw a show that involved the younger Shuller and his daugther and he appeared more liberal than the average church goer. The Crystal Cathedral does have an older congregation, and I wonder if he was too liberal for them.

I heard his son on a TV talk show share how he met his current wife.
He was living in a high end condo complex near the ocean.
It was during his divorce from his first wife.
She had kicked him out of the home.
He was walking along the beech.
When he notice a woman approaching him.
As he described her she looked like a godess approaching him.
She was clad in a bikini.
It was at that moment before she uttered a word to him.
That God spoke to him that she would be his wife.
She was a backslid christian at the time and former model and beauty queen.
They met in 1983 he was not divorced from his first wife until 1984.
He married his current wife Donna the same year.
To me the story of how he met his current wife and God speaking to him on the beech to a former beauty queen in a bikini.
Just made me think this guy just is not right.
What would have happend if the woman walking up to him that day was not a former beauty queen?
Would God have spoken to him?
I have always thought he needed to hit the alter himself and have a hour of power in repentance....

There was a show that featured one of his daughters and I was surprised at what he allowed to have portrayed out there. I don't remember the particulars, but I remember raising an eyebrow.

I read an article this morning about this issue that was quite interesting. It said that the elder Schuler's gripe with his son is that his son was preaching too much scripture. Too much right and wrong.
The elder Schuler said that they were a missions effort first and a church second while his son treated the ministry like a church first.

That is surprising and scary. I don't think I've ever seen it play out that way with the generations being on the reverse side of that argument.

Here is a link to an LA Times story and then a quote from it below the link;

Schuller built his worldwide ministry over a half century on the psychology of positive thinking and appealing to people turned off by the formality of traditional faiths. In contrast, his son's sermons have been full of direct references to the Bible.
"I was called to start a mission, not a church," Schuller told his audience Sunday. "There is a difference. . . . You don't try to preach . . . what is sin and what isn't sin. A mission is a place where you ask nonbelievers to come and find faith and hope and feel love. We're a mission first, a church second."
can somebody explain why I am supposed to care?

Schuller's quote there makes me nauseous. "You don't try to preach...what is sin and what isn't sin." But he wants people to come "find faith and hope and feel love."
Faith in what? Robert Schuller? The Chrystal Cathedral? All of their warm and fuzzy feelings?
If you don't preach truth and scripture how in the wide world is anyone going to find faith? That's heresy, plain and simple.

Sheeeeesh. Never ceased to amaze me the people who DON'T care about these discussions read them anyways then ask dumb questions like this...if you don't want to discuss it nobody is forcing you. ;-p

Bro Epley there is a modest medium.
Even with us Grace folks...
As always you stand respected.
God Bless...
can somebody explain why I am supposed to care?
There is a difference between a discussion of events happening around you and caring or picking up each cause.
What you can do as a breathing human being is have an opinion.
