Pastor Johns hasn't really changed much over the years. I saw him at Bro. Crafts 70th birthday party and he looked just the same as I remembered him.

This church where we're at this week won the choir competition for the best Large Church choir in the Bay area. They are travelling to Atlanta today to compete in this same contest. They also won $10K. The choir sang last night, and they're AWESOME!

I am not sure if you know me. I wont be at the competition as I am getting settled into my new apartment here in Atlanta but I will be at the 10:15 and 4:15 Concert/Worship service on Sunday.

Technically I am not a member of AWPC yet....I just am fellowshipping there right now. I just moved back to ATL but AWPC is the only church I go to . . .

The concert is actually just in the afternoon service. The choir is staying downtown until tomorrow. They have hotel rooms for the night. Verizon is paying for them all to get hotel rooms because they are paying for the other choirs to travel here. They said they had to do something for AWPC choir to make it all fair.

It is too bad you will have to miss it. Maybe you can by the dvd when they get it. They are selling the one from the first competition now.

Hmmm, not sure if I do know you. We have had a few people move down from NYC. Because of the different jobs I do, I do know almost everyone, so I expect I will be meeting you sooner or later. Now if I know it is you we will have to wait and see. :evilglee If I do and you want to remain anonymous, you have no worries I won't tell who you are. :oops

Oh yeah, I knew the concert was just the afternoon service. Its printed in our Monthly announcements book/pamphlet (or what have you) plus Brandon emailed me to make sure I was there for the concert.

I have no problem meeting. That would be cool. Everything I say here online adheres to the doctrine so I never have to worry about being pulled into a pastors office for saing things contrary to what the church teaches lol lol lol.

Ok, let's see if I can figure out who you are just by your Posts. Now what do we have for now. You are from NYC, just moved BACK is what you said in one post so that leads me to believe you once lived here before. Am I correct? And Brandon emailed you, so you have a tie in with Brandon somehow, because he didn't email everyone!

I will be keeping track of your future posts to see if I can guess who you are.:sly

Thanks for clarifying...I am a fat old lady now with lots of everything:) LOL. But Bro. Johns is much the same with a little less hair, not that he had all that much at JCM - all the Florida boys had receding hairlines even then:tease

The Atlanta-Journal Constitution had a good article on the event and Atlanta West Church:
Lithia Springs choir takes third in national competition

By Christopher Quinn (cquinn@ajc.com)
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Monday, November 10, 2008

Church cranked up early in Atlanta this weekend, and Atlanta West Pentecostal Church walked away $5,000 the richer for it.

The church’s choir from Lithia Springs finished among the three finalists Saturday night in the Verizon Wireless “How Sweet the Sound” competition. It took the People’s Choice award and the check that went with it.

A sing-off had winnowed 78 of the best church choirs from across the nation to 11 finalists that attracted nearly 10,000 people to Philips Arena to listen.

The spirited and emotional singers from Atlanta West brought the crowd to its feet and a little bit of heaven to the floor with a hand-waving, soul-stirring rendition of, “We Lift Our Hands in Sanctuary.”

Acme Missionary Baptist Church of Chicago took the top prize and $25,000. Burning Bush International Ministries of Ypsilanti, Mich., placed second, winning $15,000.

The three judges praised Atlanta West’s performance as powerful, inspirational and natural.

This was the article from the week before the finals:
Uplifting choir seeks high honor

Gospel championship: Diverse group of singers from Atlanta West Pentecostal Church prepares to go for national title at Philips Arena.

By Christopher Quinn (cquinn@ajc.com)
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Sunday, November 02, 2008
Two months ago, Atlanta West Pentecostal Church choir members were raising the rafters in their church in Lithia Springs. On Saturday, they’ll try to do the same in front of thousands at Philips Arena.

The path to Philips began when a choir member saw a commercial about the Verizon Wireless How Sweet the Sound gospel competition. Atlanta West entered the regional sing-off and hit the sweet spot.

They rocked the audience and blew away the judges with a high-spirited, hand-clapping rendition of “We Lift Our Hands in the Sanctuary.”

“We loved everything about this choir!” effused Atlanta-based Cory Condrey, aka gospel DJ Coco Brother, one of three judges in the regional competition.

As the lights came up on the diverse group of 45 singers that night, a mood seemed to settle on them, something they pray will happen again at the national finals at Philips.

“You could feel it, like electricity,” said tenor Daniel McHugh.
Stage lights blazed, McHugh and the others hit their first notes and the audience rolled to its feet like a wave cresting across the arena. They clapped. They shouted and cheered.

“The crowd was with us,” tenor Mark Measels said.
The spirit of the music took the singers and listeners to that rare place religious music strives to find, a state where the curtain between this world and the other gets pulled back for a moment and spirits merge in spontaneous joy.

The sound, the emotion the singers expressed, even the racial mix of black, white and tan faces that is rare for churches, made them something special, Condrey said.

“I think they are going to take it all the way,” he said.
