View Full Version : How would you have handled this?

It's 2:30 A.M. and you are sound asleep.

Crash!

Kick husband to wake him up, dog starts barking and husband is slow to move. He just sits in the bed, listening. He whispers what did you hear? I heard glass breaking! I whispered as quietly and calmly (right) as I could.

He finally rolls over and gets his gun hands me the dog to keep her from going with him, she is a small pom. So I held her and she was surprising quiet.

He leaves the room and quietly begans checking each room and turning on the lights and checking the closets of each room. While he is gone I'm thinking did it get so cold last night that the glass in the patio break? Did someone try and break in through the patio? Did someone break a car window? It was so close sounding to my room.

Finally he comes back to bed.

What happened?

My largest picture in my hallway fell and broke the glass.

Needless to say, I didn't go right back to sleep.

So would you have just jumped right up with your gun going to investigate?

Or would you take your chance of your final days being killed in the bed? lol

I'd have gotten up and checked myself minus the gun of course.

and let the dog loose to check it out....

but I would have been up the rest of the night.

but if the husband had woken up too, he could have gone to check it out.

He's like trying to wake the dead to I'm only being big and brave assuming he slept through the ordeal LOL

My husband would send me ME!!!!!! Little bitty me!!!!!!
Of course I met HIM with a shotgun once, when he came out of the kitchen.
In my defense I thought it was a burglar.

My husband probably wouldn't grab his gun. He would probably scare the burglar half to death asking what he's doing in his house. When he's mad, his tone of voice would be enough to make a burglar drop his gun. LOL!

lol My husband is a gentle man for the most part. I really don't know what he would do. I have seen him get angry, but he is not a fighter by choice. Plus he is not real tall to be frightening. :)

LOL! My husband is both gentle and not so gentle - just like I like him. :D

I just don't like him when he's really mad, which doesn't happen all that often. I just haven't forgotten what he's like when he is mad. He probably hasn't forgotten what I'm like when I'm real mad either! LOL!

He has gotten up to check on a noise, but he didn't grab his gun.

I don't own a gun, but I would definitely investigate. And then I'd immediately start in with the lecture about NOT driving nails right into the drywall to hang stuff. Either do it the way I showed you 20 years ago or just leave it - I'll get to it and hang it up for you, in a while.

I did not go and investigate. I just stood there with the 12 gauge and let him come to me.
For a lot of our married life he worked nights. I was home with my kids. I learned to be prepared for lots of things to happen, and to be able to defend us.

Ah yes, the breaking glass in the middle of the night....

Sixteen years ago when we were in process of moving from one state to another----again----I was alone in the house, (husband already in new city, while I sell the house, kids are all gone also) and it was after midnight and I'm in bed and hear a crash.
I will say in my defense I now know to call 911 but I wasn't thinking.

First I froze, then I slowly got out of bed and got on the floor beside the bed.The bedroon door was closed, I don't recall it the door locked or not. I was petrified. I waited to see if there was more noise but didn't hear anything.
I stayed on the floor and wrapped in a blanket eventually slept.
The next morning I was hestitant to leave the room but knew I had to so I started on the "tour" of house. In the back hall I found a large amount of broken glass---the globe for ceiling light fixture had come loose and fell to the floor.
I felt silly but what can I say? I was alone and I am a wimp!:nah

I get up immediately.

Seen to many movies to go out of this world without a fight.

You never know when the one time will be your time.

I know a guy who spent 2 tours in Vietnam.

He has a sound system in his house.

From anywhere in his house he can push a button.

It sounds just like a shotgun being cocked.

Oh by the way he has the fire power to back it up...

The one time I was really scared was in the daytime. Our hot water heater blew up. And I was the only person at home. I just froze, this was before we had cell phones. Eventually I decided to check out the house. Went into the kitchen towards the phone and saw water pouring out of our wash room. Called my BIL the plumber. He came and turned things off or whatever.

Out of bed with the Model 1911 "cocked and locked" pray'n somebody is not about to go into eternity.......me or some other knucklehead..... :guns

Dogs make can be a great alarm system......but even the best system has false alarms.....Our dogs kept barking one night several weeks ago. I got up several times with Sammy (my Colt 1911). I'd go into the living room where they where and they'd be barking at the front door. I'd ease the curtain back for a look and there would be nothing. After the second or third time it dawn on me it was the cats that camp out on our front porch since my dear wife started feel'n bad for them and feeding them.......

I would have made the most fearsome sound I could think of.......the sound of a shell being loaded into a 12 gauge pump shotgun!

Great home defense weapon, ain't gotta be a marksman, just point it in the general direction and pull the trigger!

We've never had one here in our house. My dad had guns when we were growing up, but they were for hunting only. Never for self-defense. They were kept in a locked guncase.

Girl, we live in the country. We don't have that old shotgun anymore. We have a new fancy one. Put in a clip and go!!!!!!!! But it is not for shooting people. I am in no way advocating that. First you call 911 if you suspect trouble, then get the gun!!!!!!!!!!

In the South we have a habit of taking care of ourselves. :)

In fact, I couldn't imagine not have a weapon to defend myself if needed.

Since we moved into our new house, we have had a couple of scares during the night. Our dog is the main culprit who will suddenly freak out at something -usually a dream and act like something/someone is in the house. After a few seconds he calms down and is asleep a minute later, but the first time was a terrifying.
I suddenly jumped up and started growling at the door, and I instantly shouted as loud as I can, "Hermes! Get him!" (anyone in the house or our neighbors, would have heard me). Somehow this sort of slapped everyone into focus.

No one was there.

Right now, we sleep with a baseball bat one one side of the bet and my 2 million candle power spot light on my side. I figure ANYONE who gets this in his face in the middle of the night is going to panic long enough for us to apply the baseball bat.
