"In our exclusive photo Michael Phelps, who won a record EIGHT gold medals for swimming at the Beijing games last summer, draws from a bong.

The glass pipes are generally used to smoke cannabis.

And after sporting chiefs announced laws which mean four-year bans for drug-taking, Phelps’ dreams of adding to his overall 14 gold medal tally at the 2012 games in London could already be OVER."

I'm not excusing drug use, but the "anti-doping" stance is in regard to performance enhancing drugs isn't it? Marijuana is anything BUT!

I would like to think he's a trained athletic that wouldn't do that to his body - maybe this paper is the UK's form of the Inquirer.

I hope it's not true. But wouldn't be surprised if it is.

WHEW!! this thread title caught my attention. I thought right away, "I know Michael Phelps and I've seen him do some - well, let's just call them "stupid" things in the far away past. But I CANNOT believe he would stoop to drugs. Nope! No one will ever convince me of that!"

So I came here prepared to defend our poor little Mikie. And what do I find? You're not even talking about the same person!!!!!!!!!! Thank the LORD!!!!

The title of this thread immediately caught my attention...

You know, back in the day when me and Michael Phelps would butt heads over some doctrinal differences, the thought did cross my mind a few times...

I'd look at some of the stuff he'd post on here and I'd ask myself: "Is Michael Phelps now doping?"

Hee hee. :)

Seriously....

It'll be bad for his public image, and he might even lose some of his endorsements. But as far as his swimming career, it probably wont be a big deal. Cannabis is not a performance enhancing drug. I don't think the governing body for the sport will give him a suspension or anything like that, over this.

For those of you not schooled in television advertising, that was a reference to a series of commercials from a few years ago. A man kept telling all of his friends that he loved them because he was trying to mooch their beer.

The standard response from all of them was "I love you too, man, but you're not getting my Bud Light".

Probably not. He'll get spanked and if he presents a repentant and cleaned up appearance folks will still take him in.

Lets break this down shall we ?

"he's sorry" -- he is sorry he has friends so stupid that they take pics of themselves smoking dope.

"it was a dumb mistake" -- is there another kind of "mistake"?

"he won't do it again" -- I will not "get caught" doing it again.

“I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment,” Phelps said in the statement released by one of his agents. “I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.”

Doping refers to something a little different than smokin da ganja mon!

I think that is what the rule refers to...if you get caught in an offical blood test for banned performance enhancing substances then you are banned for 4 years
