View Full Version : Ordered a VGA cooling fan

Since I am the proud owner of a brand spanking new PC, I have started on my endless quest to modify/upgrade it. I noticed my video card is running WAY too hot -about 80c idol and 110c on full load! I ordered (from newegg.com of course) a new VGA cooling heatsink/fan combo and will let everyone know how it goes once installed.
It 'should' let me overclock quite a bit as well.

No! STOP!! You FOOL!!! Don't overclock! It degrades the timestream for all the rest of us travelers.

"In order to overclock I need to generate 1.8 gigawatts in abruptly .25 seconds! Great Scott! "

Just got it in. Installed it. Already my idol temps have decreased by about 7 degrees C. It should lower another 1-3 degrees as the thermal paste sets. (Although I am thinking that I may have used too much of the stuff.....)

You have to be a computer geek/nerd who has some experience building or heavily upgrading their system.

I was just wondering the other day: what if you overclocked a vintage 8086 PC to a couple GHz or so. Would it instantly fry, or would it just have no idea what you're talking about?

RandyWayne

....it would suddenly, and yes, instantly, fry. Turn into a pile of hot dust even.

Cool!

Mythbusters was awesome, last night. Blowin' up bath tubs and toilets with C4. (Best line I've heard in a long time: "Fire in the bowl!!" :lol)

Everything is working... but need to somehow adjust the fan for max cooling. Also am ordering some 'Arctic Silver" thermal grease which should work a little better than the stuff that came with it.

Assuming this is a desktop, what card do you have? that is WAAAAAAAAY hot.

Edit: just noticed older post.. never mind :)

I don't have room for a card fan.

I've actually upgraded the card (again) since that post. I now have a Sapphire ATI 5850 which is probably overkill for my 1680 by 1050 monitor. I did add an additional case fan to blow through the video card since my sound card is nearly touching from beneath and block most of the air flow.

Sweet, nice card. Just recently bought a 4850 myself. Pretty heavy OC and never gets above 65c. Thought your teps were way high, but then notice the post was a year old. Don't recall what was the norm at that time ;).

Ugh, ATI losers.

Randy now I want to know what was the deal with the heatsink? Are you saying you reseated your GPU? I've never heard of anyone doing that lol.

BTW I have 2 Nvideo 9800 GTs in SLI. I bought them because they were on sale and I was using 2 7800s in SLI. I just can't afford to buy something better so I wait a few years for the price to drop.

I'd like to eventually swap out my MB or maybe just upgrade to a quad with 3 SLI slots.

Im using one of the fastest, if not fastest x2 they came out with before the quads came out on an Nvidia based MB. I still only have 2 gigs of ram, but that is partly because I am too lasy to change the stock heatsink out, which blocks one of the dimm slots....bad design. I have the heatsink and all but I have just been lazy ha

Yes, you can add custom fans/heatsinks (liquid also) cooling modifications to Gfx cards.

I've never seen a heatsink/fan replacement for a card, I've seen fans that go into PCI slot. How low profile are the replacements?

I removed the heatsink/fan combo on my old ATI card and replaced it with a Zalman unit which is a HUGE copper heat sink and fan. It reduced the the temps by quite a bit. (I still don't over clock though since I really do not need to.)

The new 5850 has a pretty good cooling solution itself so there is no need to upgrade short of going to a water cooling system.

hmmm. What do you use to monitor the temp of the card?

RandyWayne

hmmm. What do you use to monitor the temp of the card?

The ATI Catalyst Control Center which is usually part of all ATI drivers tells you what the core temp and fan RPM's are at any given moment.

Do they make cooling fans for AFF threads? I've read some on here that needed to be cooled down! :ursofunny

Just wonderin'
