Poor in spirit - One who is deeply sensible of his spiritual poverty and wretchedness. Πτωχος, a poor man, comes from πτωσσω, to tremble, or shrink with fear. Being destitute of the true riches, he is tremblingly alive to the necessities of his soul, shrinking with fear lest he should perish without the salvation of God. Such Christ pronounces happy, because there is but a step between them and that kingdom which is here promised. Some contend, that μακαριοι should be referred to πνευματι, and the verse translated thus: Happy, or blessed in spirit, are the poor. But our Lord seems to have the humiliation of the spirit particularly in view.

Poor in spirit uses the thought of poverty. It sort of teaches more about the idea than simply saying humble.

But saying poverty in spirit doesn't seem right to me.

Humble I can understand and even meekness as that is one of the fruit of the Spirit.

Like the commentator I quoted, "poverty stricken" sends the point home. We are aware of our total POVERTY in lacking anything of any worth in and of ourselves.

Humility and meekness.

No doubt, Sis. Felicity, as Jesus said also. "Blessed are the meek,

for they shall inherit the earth". Ps. 37, contrasts the wicked with

the meek. Evildoers will be cut off, but the meek shall inherit the

earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

Jesus spoke also of the peacemakers being blessed, etc.

Sounds like to me when God gets through with His Plan, it will be

Peace on earth, good will to men! That sounds like "new heavens

and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness", to me!! How?

When? God knows HOW! He knows WHEN! It's HIS PLAN..for man!!!

If man will do the Will of God, he will abide (live) forever! What we must

do is Follow, Trust, and Obey the MAN with the Plan! We have the

blueprints, and the Man (Christ) inside us to interpet the Plan for us!!

I thought it was interesting that it is the very first thing He mentioned in the Sermon on the Mount.

When we begin with humility all the other things He has stated will undoubtably be easier to attain.

I was thinking this morning how if everyone would just live by the Sermon on the Mount what a great place to live on this earth would be.

Unfortunately, so few do that we have all the tormoil that is so unnecessary just because we don't obey His commands.
