On another forum, I saw a post concerning this and decided to research it out a little. (All of the following info I am quoting directly from the Library of Congress website, not a third party commentary)
House Bill HR1388 is the "The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act" AKA "Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act (G.I.V.E.)" Sponsored by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (NY) and 37 co-sponsors.
This Bill has already passed the House with a 275 - 149 vote to accept with any Senate ammendments.
****This Portion is my commentary**** From what I can understand of this bill, it creates what some are calling the Obama Youth Brigade. (kind of scary in light of Hitler history) The Bill mandates that all students will be required to serve (High School 50 Hrs per Year minimum)& College students 100hrs per year minimum) in this program.
Here is the part that really concerns me: (Copied directly from LoC website)
SEC. 1304. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES AND INELIGIBLE ORGANIZATIONS.
Section 125 (42 U.S.C. 12575) is amended to read as follows:
`SEC. 125. PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES AND INELIGIBLE ORGANIZATIONS.
`(a) Prohibited Activities- A participant in an approved national service position under this subtitle may not engage in the following activities:
`(1) Attempting to influence legislation.
`(2) Organizing or engaging in protests, petitions, boycotts, or strikes.
`(3) Assisting, promoting, or deterring union organizing.
`(4) Impairing existing contracts for services or collective bargaining agreements.
`(5) Engaging in partisan political activities, or other activities designed to influence the outcome of an election to any public office.
`(6) Participating in, or endorsing, events or activities that are likely to include advocacy for or against political parties, political platforms, political candidates, proposed legislation, or elected officials.
`(7) Engaging in religious instruction, conducting worship services, providing instruction as part of a program that includes mandatory religious instruction or worship, constructing or operating facilities devoted to religious instruction or worship, maintaining facilities primarily or inherently devoted to religious instruction or worship, or engaging in any form of religious proselytization. (bold lettering in #7 added by me)
Folks, IMHO this is a matter that demands our attention! We should be writing our Senators and demanding that at the very least they strike this section from the Bill.
