With the creation of the internet, Facebook, and now Twitter, the way we (as a culture) receive information is quickly changing.

This presents the church with new opportunities to take advantage of the new technology to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Has your church created a facebook page? When your members sign up as friends to your church page, you can send instant announcements which they will receive on their blackberries or iphones.

With a twitter account, a pastor can have several "followers" of his daily thoughts and activities and receive feedback.

Are you taking advantage of this new technology?

We are. It's pretty amazing, really. Twitter and Facebook may seem like a waste of time to many, but they can really make even a large group of people feel like they're part of the inner circle. Words of encouragement from and to the pastor. Prayer requests distributed in an instant. Very cool stuff.

Yes, I'm taking advantage of it. I am on Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. Actually, I've been twittering since last year. I don't do it to extremes, but I do it. Another cool thing is that I just started running with my wife, Diane. She's been doing it for a couple of years. I haven't run for at least a couple of decades or more so I wasn't really excited about getting into it. However, (here's tech comes in) I was in one of my fav stores, Best Buy, and saw a Nike+ device on sale along with a pocket to hold it on your shoe laces. This device tracks your runs wirelessly through a receiver on your Ipod and gives feedback, while you're running listening to music. I thought that was cool and that it would be a good motivation to run with Diane. So I got it and calibrated it and use it. The really cool thing is that after a run, I hook up my Ipod with my MacBook Pro (said reverently) and it not only automatically syncs with the Nike+ web site but it also uploads a Twitter update posting my run, time etc. I have all kinds of people following me on Twitter...from people who attend NLC to people who follow me because of my Mac leanings to people who follow because of my running etc. It's pretty cool!

I also use Twitter to communicate when I am overseas. I love the technology. It is just one more avenue to communicate and make some difference in someone's life. You never know what doors may open up simply because someone follows you. It takes next to no time at all, so for me. it's not a time waster. It actually take MUCH less time than it does being on here! :D

Why is nobody seemingly concerned about the lack of privacy these new inventions are creating? I read more in the realm of liberal, progressive people on these privacy issues than conservatives anymore. Are we afraid of being called conservative? Our privacy is being offered on an altar of super-connectedness. I just heard on the radio last night that a texting is causing great distractions amongst our youth to the extent it is effecting their grades and concentration.

No one knows more about me than I'm willing to share, tweet or post. I have nothing to hide. :D

You receive feedback by hitting reply (message starts with "@Jim", for instance.). Then all common recipients see who the comments are directed to.

The privacy thing... *shrugs*. I got nothing to keep private, and I like the sense of connectedness. I appreciate the transparency of the whole thing. But, yes - of course you only share what you want to. Not sure what this has to do with being conservative either - other than maybe a heightened sense of big brother paranoia amongst some ;)

So, do you post nude pictures or just pictures in your speedo?

It's interesting to see which part of the Apostolic spectrum is embracing this new technology and which part is dismissing it! :D

Nothing to keep private? Care to share your bank account numbers and social security? Thanks, I'll be waiting. :D

Haha ;) Well - "nothing" is a relative term.

So what's your big fear? You think you will accidentally share your credit card number while telling people where you're going on vacation? :lol

Actuallly..... it is kinda dumb. But I use it anyway. :lol Not a big difference between Twitter and Facebook status updates though. I enter status updates in one place, and it updates both.

No, I am mainly referring to the huge lack of privacy we have now-a-days in total. I don't know that there is a thing we can do about it. I might end up giving in and joining all the stuff. But, the idea that people know so much at the push of a button is a little disconcerting to me. Maybe it's all I've been through. We were sued and when people sue you they get nasty. Any information in the wrong hands is dangerous.

I like facebook because you have the ability to post pics and talk via im to others or messages - - not just post an update of what you are eating now. LOL!

I did delete someone for saying they had coffee for breakfast. Who cares?!!! :toofunny

Anyway, I'm on Twitter solely for the political updates. Love it!

Don't have time for Facebook or MySpace. Just want to cut to the chase and get 'er done! :toofunny

Certainly valid concerns. I have been a victim of fraud and know the intanglements of lawsuits as well. I can't blame people for being hesitant, but most of what I post is pretty mundane.

And if you REALLY want to freak out about privacy, check out Google Latitude. I use it as well.

I never put up a profile. I don't have one here. I extend my life only as far as I want to extend it, especially in places where there is "consistent" controversy. :thumbsup :D

I read more on Twitter than I comment. I don't use it to post that I had a banana for breakfast. LOL! I'm very particular about my followers and who I am following.

IMO, speed and brevity are inversely related to understanding and wisdom.

Does this stuff have a place in the big picture...total spectrum of life....probably so. But to call these kind of human transactions, 'communication' (or staying in touch) is a fallacy.

Just in case somebody missed my IMO, let me add another one.

This is my own opinion. Text messaging CONTRADICTS communication despite the geometric increase in the number of so called touches or connections.

I'm plenty well freaked out already. ;)

People are sleeping while this is happening. It is scary.

That is neat if it updates both from one site. But I never liked status updates either. lol. Technologically it is interesting.
