Has your ISP changed lately? When we first got cable broadband it was about 5mbps. Then one day it dropped really low then shot up to 10.

Well that happened again recently and I just tested it at nearly 20mbps...same price

It could be because cable broadband works differently than other broadband services.

With cable broadband there is a certain amount of speed (bandwidth) available. If there are very few people in your area using the service then you get all the speed. If there are many people using the service then the speed is split up among the many. Cable broadband surfing speeds can fluctuate quite a bit.

I have no idea what speed I have. After several years with RoadRunner through Warner Cable I switched to Cincinnati Bell and have a zoomtown address. Both seem pretty much equal but zoomtown is cheaper. A young man at local Cincinnati Bell store told me I have the fastest speed available for my area (whatever that means).

I have a 20 mbit connection myself and you better believe that when it drops below 18, I am on that phone talking to their complaint department faster then a fly is on a piece of rotten meat.

Comcast is doubling the speed of two of its less expensive Internet plans, Performance and Performance Plus, for free. The two now have the capacity to reach up to 12 and 16 megabits per second.

Which means they will cut your internet in half the time?

One of my son's friends got a call from Comcast a few months ago, he quit downloading movies after they said they would cut off their service.

No. This is an upgrade. AFter it upgraded from 5 to 10 it stayed there at 10 until recently when it jumped to 20

But ours seems to be 20....I just find it interesting. I don't know how anyone can stay with DSL if cable or fios is available..

Actually I know why they are doing this. It's the competition with FIOS

There used to be a time when a T1 line was considered "fast". I have two of them at my disposal and they feel dog slow! (With a few computers being constantly updated....)

I don't know how fast my broadband service is, but we get so used to fast and faster if it slows down it's panic mode.
I could never go back to dial up that's for sure.
