View Full Version : If I wasn't apostolic...

Ok, so, if you weren't apostolic, what would you be? Please pick an option on the poll and specify.
For me, I picked church of Christ. The main reason why is because I'd like their preaching, their knowledge of the Bible (although they tend to make mountains out of molehills a lot of the time), singing and their restorationist/Christian primitivist "theme", which I like. I'd also consider the Primitive Baptists for my "second choice faith" but I'd have a lot of issues with them being hyper-Calvinists, since I consider myself a bit of a hyper-Arminian... but I sure would enjoy the a capella singing.
Anyways, not that I or anyone else that responds to this poll doesn't want to be apostolic, but it sort of tells something about someone, when they pick their "second choice" faith, if you will...

Where's the beef?!
Ooops... I forgot to put in an "other option", when I saw you nakhoe, I thought, "I should have added Messianic Jewish", but they're sort of not a large enough group, and they have some who are apostolic, but, either way, hopefully whoever votes will also specify.

I grew up Catholic, so I would have more than likely defaulted back to that if it wasn't for the Lord.

We already have 2 choices for Methodist/Wesleyan/Holiness, btw, are trinitarians, Holiness does not count as some sort of apostolic/oneness in my mind... Why Holiness? These Holiness-type, in my mind are the type on holiness.cc

For our "Others" please just post and explain the other option- however, non-Christian groups are purposely not included in the other, with the exception of discouraged/atheist/agnostic...

I chose, "Trinitarian Pentecostal/Charismatic."
Honestly, if I wasn't so deeply convicted of the thruth of water baptism in Jesus Name, I'd probably already be in one of those churches.
But Truth triumphs all the stuff that would allow me to attend those churches without some personal conflict.

I'd probably gravitate toward something that emphasizes free will, and doesn't remove responsibility for sin from the person, except through repentance.
Methodist/Wesleyan/Lutheran would be my leaning.

Why would that divide you? Do you mean they actually have a problem with baptizing in the name of Jesus? (Remember, I was NOT raised UPC and all this stuff is foreign to me.)
I can see you feeling they are wrong, because God is one, but I wouldn't think you would divide yourself from them. Most people that consider themselves trinitarians do not really believe there are 3 separate gods up there, so I didn't know they would think it bad to use the name of Jesus when baptizing people, at least not so that it causes a division in a family. Hmmmm, interesting.
Sorry, don't want to hijack the thread.

I like some of the Reformed theology, I visit a Lutheran church when I don't attend my own, I still am in many ways what my roots shaped me to be - Mennonite/Anabaptist. I enjoy what some would call Charismatic worship services (but absolutely no name-it-claim-it)
How should I vote?? :)

I voted Trinitarian Pentecostal. But I'm not really sure I'd be ok there. I haven't found an Apostolic church that works out real well either though.

If it seemed that my answer was a bit flippant, it is just that I can't
imagine being anything else. It's all I've known. However I have studied
what some others have taught. How can I relate what I know unless I
have something known about their teaching to bridge the gap between
the known and unknown. In order to connect with them.

I was raised closest to Church of Christ, but never did like that church. Gravitated toward Pentecostal/charismatic. Never agreed with the doctrine of any other church and believed whole heartedly that mom's idea that with so many religions, we should just pick and chose what we like and hope we're right was totally wrong. So I would be frustrated, possibly would attend a Church of Christ but more likely Baptist or Pentecostal/Charismatic or Nazarene church, absolutely lost, and very very hungry.

I voted "Discouraged/atheist/agnostic."
I was raised in the RCC, but was searching because my soul hungered for so much more. I'm certain that if God hadn't found me when He did, I would have been eternally lost because of the discouragement and despair that I was in. I had suicidal thoughts and tendencies before, and I'm certain that I would have successfully done the deed had the Lord not found me. He truly did save me!!!

Being first and foremost a Messianic Goy (a Gentile disciple of Yeshua/Jesus, the Hebrew Messiah) I would join with a Messianic Jewish (a traditional apostolic) assembly, like the initial Gentile Christians did.
I guess that makes me a for real "old-time" apostolic.
If not for that, I guess I would op out for the group that the Spirit of God initially led (directed) me to when Jesus first found and confronted me: The Religious Society of Friends. Today they are known mostly by their common tag: Quakers - also known generally for being quite before the Lord, taking seriously their responsibility for the entire body teaching/supporting/ministering to the entire body (no religious lords or kings among them), their exercise of the spiritual gifts, plain speech and plain dress, and for their "quaking in the Spirit".
You get the picture - almost apostolic.

I picked Baptist because in my experience and in this area there are some very good Baptist Churches that are progressive in their style of worship and offer very good teaching. I am sooooo done with the hyper emotionalism and I find that that is pretty common in most of the charismatic style churches in this area.
What would be ideal is a church that has solid teaching, deep worship with honest real people who have a heart for outreach and demonstrate love love and more love.
But....

They don't beleive Jesus and Jehovah to be ONE in ANY SENSE.
They believe Jesus to be less than Jehovah, and yet deity.
The theology of these folks is polytheistic.

I voted for the Methodist . My reasons are before I got into the truth . I attended a small town Christian church . There I learned the ways a true christian should walk . They taught me the word when I was very small 3 yrs to 6 yrs old then I moved away . So I learned the goodness of God thru these fine people . Yet as we all know they don't have the total truth ,but the EXCELLENT base they gave me is truly priceless. For this reason I was always searching for more and one day my friend who was a major stoner ,invited me to his new found church the rest is history . Hats off to Frankie Beckham who witnessed to me and Bro. Gerald Adams who baptized me. :thumbsup:thumbsup

Why isn't Emerging Christianity an option?
Sept5SavedTeen
06-27-2009, 07:40 AM
There were only 7 options so I had to make them as broad as possible, so I didn't add SDA, Emerging church, or specific denominations as that would have complicated things.
