My son got connected with the church he went to when he was at Wheaton based on info from the forum. It worked out well.
So, now he is bound for USC Film School.
1. He will need to find a church and a place to live. What churches would you recommend in the area? And why? :rockband
2. Does anyone know of a church family in a relatively safe area near the school that might rent out a room? :bedtime
Thanks. :thumbsup

Doesn't Nancy Granquist and her husband pastor a chruch near there?

Grandquist are in Northern CA. in the San Francisco bay area.
USC is in Los Angeles. I would recommend Dan Butler's church in Belflower - southwest Los Angeles Area near Long beach. He's a good pastor.

I forgot about that church - then again, do you think Newman's son would go to a UC church? lol

St Mark- Umm... What is the church like? Michael's ambition is a bit outside the box.
Bro. Yonts' church in Illinois was a young, dynamic church with a great youth leader.
I saw that Jeremy Foster lives in LA. Would you happen to know where he attends church?

I am guessing that this might not be the best fit for someone pursuing film studies. :ursofunny

Bellflower http://www.ipchurch.com/
Escondido http://www.npwconline.com/ might be too far
San Fernando Flowers...no website

There are elements of Pentecostal tradition at Belflower but for the most part it's very contemporary - lot's of young bands, casual, etc very southern CA so to speak. The pastor's son has a band that's probably in line w/what he may be use to. the church runs about 400 I believe.
He may also want to try the church in Torrance (west Los Angeles Area).
the pastor is steve saize. He married Debbie Foster. I don't know anything else about it except that I know that Debbie and steve are dynamic leaders.
Also, there is a very small church in Van nuys ( north L.A Area) that he may want to look into. There is a very FAMOUS Guitarist that attends there....his name escapes me right off but trust me, you're son will know this musician lol

Just follow the links. If he does not mind driving to BF it would be a great church to go to.

Prax,
Escondido is in the San Diego area - way too far from L.A to attend church don't you think??
There is Tom Copple's church in the Anahiem area - it's about 45 min. but during the week the traffic would be impossible.
ALso, Joe Hunt in Long beach??
And Phil White in Burbank

Phil White? I really DOUBT he will like it there. They are Ultra Cons and not UPC either

If he is in film school, the Butler's church in Bellflower would be great. Dan Butler is a good well-balanced godly man.

Jeremy Foster lives in LA? Do you mean Lousiana? I don't think he lives in Los Angeles.
USC? Darin Sargent's would be too far from USC. Jeff Morgan is in Costa Mesa/Orange County. He can check on UPCI.org for churches in that area too.

Neuman,
Knowing your views, I would recommend Joe Hunts church in Long Beach. It is a progressive church, Joe is on the ball and cutting edge. Of course check out St. Marks recommendations, like Bell Flower of Darren Sargent's Church.

I believe Daren's church is in San Diego - too far from USC.
there's also Tom Copple's church in the Anahiem area (can't remember if I mentioned it?
There are also churches in the inland empire area (riverside/San Bernardino)but It's probably too far with the traffic.
If you're looking for a conservative church, I recommend PHILL WHITE In Burbank or Elder Fraizer (AMF) in the Ontario area.
He may also enjoy visiting Bishop Noel Jones' church in Gardena ( central L.A) at least to check out the music - their band is awesome!
I think the name of the church is Refuge Temple or City of Refuge

I recommend International Pentecostal Church in Bellflower, pastored by Dan Butler, for the following reasons:
Dan Butler is one of the finest men in Pentecost.
The home of AEM (Apostolic Entertainment Ministries) is there.
One of the congregants is Eric Roemheld, a great person in his own right, as well as a set designer in Hollywood. Definitely a good person to know as a film student.
His profile is here: http://www.ninetyandnine.com/Archives/20060206/cover.htm
Place to live? Bellflower is a wonderful community, and I'm sure the Butlers can help out.

Butler's church is filled with "industry" people so he wouldn't get any flack for being in film school. Congrats on USC Film School btw, that is an amazing program and I would have loved to have gone there.
He (Butler) still is pretty conservative though...the Long Beach church might be a better fit, but a ways to travel. Everyone else giving you advice about escondido, san diego, O.C. has never lived in LA proper...it would take FOREVER to commute!!!
I can't wait to hear updates on his education...
Also, some of Butler's congregation has worked on some huge flicks....including Batman!
Newperson,
Tell your son I am jealous! He is living out my dream. I originally was going to go to the University of Texas and major in RTF (Radio, Television, and Film). God sidetracked and now 30 years have passed.
If he can't find a Oneness church he likes there is a good Charismatic church in LA on Wilshire Blvd called The Oasis. My family used to go there back when my wife and kids were living in LA several months out of the year.

I would LOVE the opportunity to be going to film school AND step inside a UC church and tell them all what I was doing. :)
The expression on most faces would be great material for a future film!

If your son is looking for a Church, then I would definitely recommend Bro. Trevino in Bel Gardens or Bro. White in Burbank. Also there is Bro. Clifford Clark in Ontario and Bro. Russell Frasier in Fontana but that would be a longer drive. These are all men that stand for truth and do not put their finger in the air to see which way the wind is blowing.
Now if your son is just looking for a Crowd and not a Church then I would recommend Bro. Flowers in San Fernando or he can drive a little ways and go to Bro. Camerons church in Oxnard. There are several more but can't think of their names at the moment.
Also somebody mentioned Nancy Grandquist. That would be a perfect idea, only if he doesn't want to be saved.
Just my thoughts. I am sure all opinions are welcome here.

LB is a Starbucks church, while the others is Dunkin Donuts. You'll find goatees and laptops hanging out at a Starbucks, while most folks just grab their coffe & donut at Dunkins and go on their way.
LB is Mac the other PC.
You might see an illustrative sermon at LB with a lot of creativity, the other will break down the Word ol skool style with a good ol' fashioned Bible study (and the Man can break it down)....different strokes for different folks. By looking at your kids vids, I figured he was more into creativity???

Have you heard butler preach?Yes, he can break it down like nobody! My BIL was his Music Director and he has preached here in Canada as well. He is amazing.
I went to Bible College with Dan Butler and have read his book but have actually never heard him preach.
He is a very smart guy and very personable. I disagree with him on many things including the premise of his book but he is a very agreeable guy to disagree with!
I spoke to him at the last GC I went to 10 years ago and had an interesting conversation. It came up about some of those "industry" folks in LA being in his church. I found it pretty interesting since he is pretty conservative.
One interesting note is that his brother, Jeff Butler, is an exUPCer who done went and "gone charismatic" in the GNCM mold.
