Apparently the family was on ABC's Wife Swap a while back ... the dad is a science fan and made the balloon with the boy. A "sibling" according to the news said they saw the boy get in the balloon and release the cord holding it to the ground.
I'm hoping the kids are playing a mean joke and the boy is hiding somewhere.

I smell a hoax. The balloon looks way too small to carry a boy into the air.

OK, just watched the vid above. It's bigger than I thought. ;) Somewhat plausible, after all. The Mythbusters needed thousands of balloons to lift a child off the ground, and it seems like the bunch was way bigger. Could be wrong.

Wonder if the kid got off before the balloon really got up in the air, walked away and fell asleep somewhere?
those parents are going to be in SO much trouble.
Wonder how long that sibling that untied the balloon will be grounded for? Better ground the six year old too-keep him on the ground til he's of age, at least.

It seems likely that almost from the moment it lifted off, there'd be eyes (and soon, cameras) on it almost constantly. Nobody saw the child fall, apparently. I still think the child most likely was never on board, or got out before it took off. (Despite my partial retraction above. ;))

His parents should SUE Disney/Pixar/Mythbusters/Discovery Channel for their role in this. They should organize a boycott and storm the Hollywood studios with pitchforks and torches blazing!

Our son pushed one of his Matchbox cars through the front grill of our truck and poked a whole in the radiator. Of course, I'm driving it and the dash light comes on. I just kept driving and prayed I would make it to the next gas station.

Found the boy in the garage hiding in a box. The parents give him a whuppin and will be taking into custody by the state. Lose custody.
I suspect some will want to make this a criminal incident. I thinkg it is funny.
Boy was actually not in the garage itself but in an attic above the garage hiding in a box. I have a feeling he probably untethered the balloon then was afraid he was going to be in big trouble so hid.

No, I just get in line and fight for my turn at the remote or for more bandwidth just like everybody else under my roof. I never let the boys go off with their video games so I keep the same rules with my own "games."
I have an office - but I share it with the kids when they have "serious" homework. And there are no doors on the office either. I can lean out a see into the family room and we're all "together." There's a "music room" next to the family room and pretty much open to it.
What we do, we all do together; more or less.

Looks like this might've been a hoax.
During a live interview on CNN Thursday night, Falcon Heene said he heard his family calling his name as he hid in the rafters of their garage. At the time, there was a frantic effort to bring down the balloon safely.
Falcon's father asked, "Why didn't you come out?" The boy answered, "You had said we did this for a show."
If this can be proven, the family needs to be charged with the bill for wasting the resources of the FAA, State Patrol, local Police and the television news stations who used their helicopters to follow and track the balloon.
But I doubt this could be proven.

Bigger news than that balloon----Timmy is psychic!
They did it for the show, according to the six year old. They already had their TV time on Wife Swap-what, are they addicted or something?
I wonder... Did they build the balloon with this event in mind? It was built with a place to ride in. It was tied so that it was easily released by a child, or at least thats what they led everyone to believe.
Dad may not have meant for the six year old to ride, just for him to release the balloon for a show, and then thought the kid misunderstood and got in, when they couldn't find the kid anywhere else. But why build a riding compartment in it to start with? Was the compartment or the balloon big enough to carry a man and a kid? If not, what was the motive? And was the neighbor that said he got in involved too?

standard requires "total impairment" of cognitive or volitional capacity
"Idiot" is the cognitive total impairment. Add the volitional impairment and we get "insane"
Problem with 6 year old boys is well explained by Dr Dodson also from the Springs area in colorado. The creative boys are also very impulsive.(dodson in Bringing Up boys
My question is should the boy get a spanking? Will the parents get in a bigger heap of trouble for a spanking than the original deed?

Have personal knowledge, do ya?

I suspect that ALL those reality shows are directed towards people whom
have a need for ATTENTION as well as money EVERYONE could use a
little more cash, after all., but what people DO for it, is somethin else.
There was even a show about that if I'm not mistaken.
I think that ,HONESTLY its about
"What are people willing to RISK/GIVE UP for such attention OR simply,
for money"? Good question I think that we all need to ask ourselves.
I have. We will ALL be tested one day.
