Almost reads like a spoof.
There is a serious theory about time travel, designed to avoid paradoxes like 'what if you went back in time and killed your grandfather?' I don't buy it, but it says that laws of physics would prevent you from doing that. The gun would jam, or something. I don't buy it because it's absurd. Physics can't tell if a gun shot would or wouldn't cause a paradox. And there are lots of other ways to influence the present by going back to the past, and there's really no way of knowing how drastically you'd change things just by being there. The butterfly effect.
No, I favor the theory of splitting into multiple universes, when you go back. This time line isn't affected at all. "You" can't show up, suddenly, in history books if you, say, assassinated President Johnson. Those books would show up in a new time line.
Back To The Future almost got it right. Doc talks about the time line thing, but they blow it by showing that snapshot with people fading away. Still, an awesome trilogy!

I don't know about the future trying to screw it up, but it is crazy that this thing is even in existence. Crazy AWESOME.
If you are going to end the world, go out with a bang and have it be from a man-made black hole.

Maybe the first (and last) bang will be in December, 2012! :hmmm

Granted, we don't KNOW if it hasn't been done already and what it would really be like, but time travel is one of those things that Hollywood gets wrong more than just about anything else. Most screen play writers seem to think that you change future events by changing major past events when in fact all you would have to do is simply walk down the street for 5 minutes and if you went back far enough you would find that everyone you ever knew wouldn't even have been born. ANYTHING that would disrupt someone would cause an immediate ripple which wouldn't take long to circle the globe and when you consider the biology of "conception" that delay of a 1/10 (or 1/100) of a second, or whatever it is, would literally cause a different person to be born since a different sperm would be doing the fertilizing.

The Simpsons got it "right".
