When I first repented of my sins ,and decided to live for God ,some of the best advice in the world someone gave me was that I need to read my Bible all the way through from Genesis To Revelation.
I have since read my Bible all the way through and continue to do so regularly.
And I read more than the KJV all the way through as well.
How many times have you read your Bible all the way through ?

our family has read the bible through 4 times. Twice before my youngest brother knew how to read, then twice afterward over the course of what...8-10 years. We read minimum of a chapter every night sometimes more, and not on Wed or Sun nights because of church.

When on Friday or Sat night my friends from school would come over so we could go to the mall or whatever, mom used to pull them in, sit them down, put a bible in their lap, and start reading. She even used to call on them to see if they were following along.

I love that woman today.

I've read the Bible through several times but I don't do it every year.

I read the RSV through once.
I read the Amplified New Testament through once.
I read the NLT through twice.
I read the CJB through once
and then read the Old Testament through once more.
I read the Jerusalem Bible through once (including the Apocrypha).
I don't ever remember reading the KJV through cover to cover like those others but I've been reading the KJV here and there for 50 years.

Bro.Sam I read the KJV all the way through ,and I have it more than once all the way though.
The NASB is only other one I have read all the way through.

I've read every verse in the KJV but I have never systematically read it all the way through like I did those other versions.

Let's me think........

I've read the KJV, Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21, twice, and have typed every word of the KJV two times... first time, double spaced, single-sided
(4,385 pages, & it takes seven 3 inch, 3 ring binders to contain them all), and the second time, single spaced, double-sided (907 pages for the Old Testament & 286 pages for the New Testament, both contained in one 3 inch 3 ring binder). BTW... I've never had a single typing class in my entire life... still continue to employ the ole "seek and ye shall find method." Both times typing the entire Bible took me about 6 months of daily typing at every available opportunity.

My reason for typing it was because I was searching for an answer to something I deemed extremely crucial. Nope! Never found it either time. I located it at 10:30 PM, Saturday evening, September 16, 1996 when in frustration I opened my Bible, laid it on my desk & begged God to give me the answer! Bingo! The first verse I read, and there it was. Ain't it simply amazing what God makes a fellow go thru to get an answer to a question? But, I must say, it was all worth it, and I would not hesitate to do it again if necessary. Guess God wanted to see my faith, huh?

I must say though, I seem to get more when I conduct a word, or doctrine subject matter search of the Bible, than I do by simply reading it. And to aid me in my understanding of the things I read I always keep a concordance and a large dictionary close by. And I also use other versions as well, and own just about every translation ever published. I like to do comparative studies when I am seeking for an answer to a particular matter.

My favorite Bible has a cardboard backing, wrapped in black duct tape! Nothing pretty to look at, but it contains so many hand-written "footnotes" I don't know how I could do a serious study without it. It also happens to be the one I always take to church with me, along with a small pad and pencil so I can take notes and do further research afterwards. Just trying to "test the spirits"! Can't be anything wrong with that, huh?

I do truly love God's written Word! In fact, my favorite scriptural passage is Jeremiah 15:16 - "Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name O LORD God of hosts."

When I was a child, my mother would discipline me for reading my bible too much. She wanted me to read it, but I was obsessed. I had read it through four times at the age of twelve. I would get a little flashlight and read it underneath the covers when everyone else was asleep.

We also had a huge bible story book called "Hurlbut's Stories of the Bible" (bought from a traveling salesman) that Mom would read to us every night.

I quizzed alot. At one point I had memorized the entire gospel of John.

My Mom and Dad put a love for the Word in me.

I once sold those large family Bibles door-to-door back in the early 1960s (for a company called Advance Bible Distributors of Orlando, Florida if my memory serves me right). Also sold those Children's Bible Stories books as well. I recall one woman wanted one so much for her children that the only money she had was in a small glass "piggy bank," and used a buter knife to get the coins out of it to pay me. Also recall a man who answered the door and advised me he was an atheist and didn't need no Bible. I remember telling him we made one especially for atheists.... No picture of Jesus on the cover - the place was left blank so he could put whatever picture he wanted there, and all of the pages would be blank so he could write in it whatever his personal beliefs were. I ended up selling him a large white leather bound Bible! I still have one of those large Bibles, although it is seldom used... too large and generally is displayed on the table in the living room.

When I was little I was placed in remedial reading because I just wasn't getting the whole reading thing. It was a life changing decision. My teacher was Mrs. Fletcher and I could tell she really loved me. She took lots of time with me and made reading fun. We would act out the stories we read in class. She was da bomb!

It only took one year in her class to develop an absolute love for all things written. I began to devour the bible and every Louis L'Amour book I could get my hands on.

Great story.

My mom paid for a lot of stuff with money she made from sewing. We were classic Ozark rednecks in every way. She still has the story book.

I just purchased one of those CD Bible programs which contains lots of pictures of various locations in Israel and many commentaries. I don't recall off hand who the narrator is, but it is possible to bring up whatever passage you want, as well as locate a wide variety of pasages which contain a particular word or phrase. Quite interesting and very useful indeed!

PapaDon I'd love to see that old bible.

I'll have to get my digital camera, take a pic of it and post it here for you. Its nothing to brag about, but I recall a man to whom I was witnessing by reading it "upside down" as he followed along, who suddenly grabbed my arm and said "Stop that! You're making me shake inside like a bowl of jello!" I explained to him that it was NOT me that was causing him to shake, rather it was the Holy Ghost because the Bible tells us that the word of God is "quick, and powerful, and sharper than a twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." He asked me to come to his house and show his wife the things I had shown him, and after I did that they both came to our church to be baptized. Shortly after they arrived there he suddenly got up and ran out of the building. I went out to try to coax him to return but he wouldn't budge. I suspect he felt the presence of the Spirit there and being a sinner was unable to withstand it. After several months of further witnessing to him he agreed to return and was baptized after a mid-week Bible study. Sadly, he died several months after that while asleep upon his bed. I don't know that he ever received the baptism of the Holy Ghost though. I sure hope so.

I remember the day I realized I could read for myself and read my first real storybook. I can still see that book and the charcoal illustrations in my mind. :) . It was like a whole new world opened up to me!!

I got in trouble for lying to the teacher one day in 1st grade soon after I made this discovery. I was supposed to be doing arithmetic but was reading instead. She asked me if I'd done my arithmetic exercise and I said, "yes". She asked me to bring it to her and of course I had no choice but to show her an empty page.

She spanked me! I was so upset that a few minutes later when we went outdoors for recess I ran home and told my mother I was never going back to school again. LOL!

She marched me immediately back to school and made me apologize for not telling the truth. The teacher hugged me and all was well.

I was a huge avid voracious reader and read all the time. I just wish my parents had shown some interest in that and helped direct me in my reading. My mom never read to us. My dad read but I don't remember him ever doing a lot of reading with us. Maybe he did when I was too young to remember.

I walked to the local library all by myself at the age of 7 and got an application form so I could loan books out. :)

We didn't have a tv (and I still don't), so we had lots of time to read. We would trade L'Amour books with other folks in the church. It was real easy knowing what to buy family members for special events.

We also ordered a bunch of hunting and fishing magazines like Outdoor Life, Field & Stream and the Missouri Conservationist.

I finished English and History when I was a freshman in High School. It took a while longer with Math and Science. I would fly through paces simply because I loved to read history and also because english helped me understand what I was reading.

My favorite book ever was called "Treasures of the Snow" and was required reading in the ACE school I attended from sixth grade on.

One of my most treasured (and fragile) Bibles is one which belonged to my Dad, who died January 22, 1974. He always wrote small notes alonngside many of the passages in this Bible, and one of my favorites was found at Acts 4:29 - "And now Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word." My Dad's note reads - And may it never cease!

Sorry, Didn't mean to Hi-jack. I've read the Bible through several times, probably 5 or so.

Enjoyed reading the Amplified through, but it took WAY TOO LONG.

Last year, I read through THE MESSAGE. Preached from it several times.

One, I remember in particular was "Don't Be a Scatterbrained Idiot" from James 1.

I quit counting years ago then I had read it through 50 times. For years I would read nothing but the Bible not even the paper. I would take it to school and insert it in my books. I have not done a systematic thru the Bible reading for the past few years I need to do it again. Please do not think I am boasting I have been blessed with speed reading all my life. I can read a 300 page book easily in a day if it is interesting.

Like Elder E, I have not done a systematic read through in a few years, but have done so many times.

Re the subject of reading, it has always been my joy. I have told my nieces and nephews many times that if they can learn to read, the whole world is opened up to them.

I think it is so important to teach children, not only the joy of reading, but teach them the books of the Bible and how to find them.

This was instilled in me in Sunday School when I was a young'un and it has always stood me in good stead.

One more thing...I have a nephew with Asperger's and he was having a hard time reading. I bought my boy a Bible with his name on the front and he began taking it to church.

His mom said he would sit with his Bible opened and try to read. Well, one day last summer I was over to their house and Ethan read Genesis 1:1 to me.

He is now reading very well...not where he should be for a child his age, but reading nonetheless and loving it.

I am convinced it was the prayers, coupled with family support and the Bible...to God be the glory!!

the NIV once
currently reading through the ESV

I'm talking starting at Genesis and going to Revelation.

Now, I probable have read the Bible through many more times b/c I am "addicted" to reading. Once when I was 14 I sat down outside the house in the swing with my Bible and started reading the book of Isaiah. When I turned the page and saw Jeremiah I was amazed that I had read the whoel book.
You can read the whole Bible in 72 hours.
So if you read just 1 hour a day you can be through in 72 days (duh). So if you are consistant with it you could read it through 5 times a year easily like that.
I have listened to the NT twice (I think) this year on CD

Felicity, one of the things I have grounded my daughter Elaine from is the Library and books. I have had teachers and people look at me like I am crazy....but disobedience is disobedience and I have had to drag the kid out of the library where I often find her nose buried in a book when she is supposed to be home cleaning her room or doing whatever else I've instructed her to do. She's been in trouble so many times for reading all night long... i've lost count. I understand because I did the same as a teen. I didn't have tv growing up, but still although they do have a TV, she would rather read.

As for bible reading... I couldn't keep my kids reading until I finally got them their own TNIV for Christmas... now they read most nights before going to bed. I think the last I checked one was in Numbers, the others in Deuteronomy.

Not me.. I must be a slower reader then... no way an hour a day for 72 days.. I started on a mission to read it through late November after just jumping around from book to book before never really completing anything....

I started with the New Testament and I read some in the morning and again at night. The New Testament I loved and can’t wait to get back…well, ok, I cheat and read things like 1 and 2nd Corinthians the other night… I read Romans again.. Gal...maybe that’s my problem.

I’m only read straight through into Deuteronomy in the old testament… but I am not just reading though.. I look up the words I don’t understand or want clarification on. I have an old Hebrew/Greek study bible of my dad’s and I read all the commentary while I am going through. However, honestly, I just don’t find the old as interesting and have fallen asleep in Leviticus and Numbers. I’ve also read 1 and 2 Samuel, Isaiah, Psalms, Proverbs, Esther, Ruth, Job..but I was back in Deut last night. Gotta stay focused. :D

I don’t know why my parents never had me read it as a child/teen. I read all the time.. I always had my nose in a book and was constantly teased because my name was “Reading” and I was always reading.

Usually I read the bible through in a year ,I think I have read the KJV about 7 times through.I did read the NASB once though.
Really I do alot of reading in the NKJV ,which I need to read systematically through.
This year I must confess ,I didn't start reading the Bible through in a year again.
But every day before I go to work ,I start my day with Bible reading.
Usually The KJV and then another translation.

I am a voracious reader and tend to read 5-7 books a week pluss my regular Bible.
I find though that while reading the Bible, I cannot go fast. I don't know if it is so interesting or just that it is so in depth. Either way, it takes me a while to read chapters. The most that I have read in a sitting was 40 chapters, about an hour.

I do own a NIV ,but I prefer The NKJV to it .Also the ESV is nice.
I have the Amplified as well.I have two NASBS as well.

I had a pastor that read very rapidly.
What he did to keep from speed reading the Bible was that he forced himself to write out the Scriptures and then read them. That way he wouldn't go through them so fast.
