By the way, before anyone gets ninny on this, David and the Giants and nearly every other Christian Rock band cover this song at some point.

I am thinking of Petra's version.

Just downloaded the MP3 and I have one major suggestion: The file is 114 megs and recorded at 128 kbps. This is barely adequate for music but overkill for voice. It should probably be converted to 64, or even 32 kbps. I have a pretty fast connection but it still took several minutes to receive.

Actually I have COX cables premium service here in Mesa, AZ which gives me 20 megs down and 5 up. (So in effect I am MUCH cooler then those using AT&T's service.)

The host site's bandwidth throttle will usually be a greater factor when it comes to download speeds. Reworking an audio file to 64 kbps makes sense because it will also be easier on the host's bandwidth.

Speaking to the content of the debate, I am having a hard time believing that one of the debate positions is that musical instruments are not authorized by scripture.

:toofunny

We have at&T, too...:( When we lived in town, we had cable, and it was way better than dsl. Out in the country, we have no choice. It's dsl or dial-up, and that's a no-brainer.

thanks randywayne. I'll remember that when I upload my next .mp3.

Yeah, it was quite a debate.

And yes, the holder of that position (Perkins?) is putting nearly all of his eggs in the basket of silence, meaning that since the scripture doesn't tell you to use instruments in worship, then they must be forbidden. Similar to the example given of someone accused of murder saying that he can present at least 50 witnesses who did NOT see him murder that woman.

Did he miss the OT references to the Levite musicians who played at the tabernacle/temple? David, the psalms and the other contributers to that... don't see where he gets much traction from that position.

That's a common CoC position on music. Most will use a tuning fork to get the congregation on key. I asked a CoC friend about that and why they thought a tuning fork was allowable when the Bible doesn't call for one.

He said that the difference was that a tuning fork was an "aid" and "not an instrument."

I always wanted to see somebody turned loose with a set of tuning forks.

The "aid not a tool/instrument/decoration" argument seems to be used quite often. Usually used when asking why a "no jewelry" minister is wearing a watch or a "no doctors allowed" individual is wearing eye glasses.
