View Full Version : Funny Thought On The Way Home From Church Today

Today was incredible. We did a song to open the day that was unreal. It's an old Hillsong song, "Salvation Is Here."
It's not enough to say it was "Unreal." It was explosive. It was so explosive that we cancelled the second song of the set and just did the song again.
"For I know my God saved the day
And I know His Word never fails
And I know my God made a way for me
It's gonna be alright."
Oh my goodness. Explosive.
So anyway, on my way home I had this funny thought.
I've been involved in a few spats this week here in the forum. And really, they're all kinda silly. I've posted a few opinions about the mosque, and had my Christianity questioned. I posted that I haven't spoken in tongues and was told I'm not born again. Just a few minutes ago I was told I'm making false accusations and I have no idea what that one is about. I was told by a friend that my kind of church doesn't teach repentance, doesn't teach the bible, and doesn't ask for commitment.
So I was driving home, thinking about all I've heard this week, all the angry words that fly around on the forum and and then thought about the Church Gathering experience I'd just had.
It was just a funny moment. I'm sure glad I have amazing church experiences once a week. Without it, I don't think I could survive some of you Christians!:lol

Someone said that the Church is the only army that buries its wounded.
Someone else said that most of the Church's spiritual warfare is just a circular firing squad.

Great report. :thumbsup
You realize, don't you Mr. Smith, that some Christians would say:
that anyone who would sing a Hillsong song is not a REAL Christian
and
that anyone who goes to church just once a week is not a REAL Christian

I understand where you are coming from Mr. Smith.
This is an "older" song about salvation being brought
We actually used to sing this as a congregational song

This is great, really it is. This seems more like what I thought Mr. Smith was/is about. I'm glad to hear this good report.
I guess my point of confusion is that all week you've argued in favor of secular music in worship, in favor of muslim rights to build and spread their paganism, and against the creation account in the Word of God.
I think sometimes your giving out mixed signals here on AFF, just sayin'

I didn't read the posts about "secular music" in worship but the church has taken "secular music" over the years and used it, some times rewriting the words
I don't like the idea of the mosque being built where they want it in NYC. I personally think it is an "in your face" monument to a Muslim victory, but it is my understanding that they have a constitutional right to build it there as long as it conforms to local building codes and zoning restrictions.
As far as creation, I believe God is the Creator or First Cause but many Christians have problems and questions with "science and the Bible" and have tried to weave the two together and have come up with various conclusions.

Sam,
We also sang this song as a congregational song when I was growing
up! Been a while. Great old song!

Not to rain on your parade Sam, but isn't it, "The Christian army is the only army that shoots their wounded?" Maybe I've had it wrong all these years. "Bury them" works too. I guess that would mean we bury them alive, huh?

Yep, you are correct, Sam! There was a person who, at one time, was very influential in my life and ministry, who would routinely RIP Hillsong to shreds.
And yeah, once a week doesn't make me very spiritual, huh? To be honest, I'd go every day if I could. I love it.

It could be either "bury" or "shoot." I like "bury" because we often consider some one to be lost and without hope if they are wounded so we just go ahead and bury them. I remember hearing a sermon on tv (I mean on the monitor) years ago, "Help, I've fallen and the Church won't let me up."

There has never been a service in which we performed a "secular" song, that we didn't do dynamic "Christian" music. Secular songs are used to bring attention to a theme or point that's being made and to use it to bring people to church who may love that particular artist or group.
Muslims rights....it's because there is a constitutional right to freedom of religion and when we begin to erode any of that, we're all going to pay the price. I have no idea what's so hard to understand about that.
I have not argued against the creation account in the bible.

The mosque developers are tax deadbeats.
Sharif El-Gamal, the leading organizer behind the mosque and community center near Ground Zero, owes $224,270.77 in back property tax on the site, city records show.
El-Gamal’s company, 45 Park Place Partners, failed to pay its half-yearly bills in January and July, according to the city Finance Department.
The delinquency is a possible violation of El-Gamal’s lease with Con Edison, which owns half of the proposed building site on Park Place. El-Gamal owns the other half but must pay taxes on the entire parcel.

Glad you were refreshed in the Lord Smithy. I enjoy alot of the Hillsong stuff. I think they did this song live when I saw them at Willow Creek.

Wow. So true. I don't do a lot of "Original Greek meaning" stuff, but Galatians 6:1, where it says, "Restore such a one", that word, "Restore" uses a Greek word that was derived from a word that means "To pick up and carry."
Can you imagine what Christianity would be like if we picked up and carried all those who fell?

You've been to Willow? You never told me!! That's my second-favorite place in the world.
Hillsong has been in our area quite a few times but I've never gone. They have revolutionized the expression of the Sunday Church Service....for the better!! They've allowed my inner-rocker to finally come out of the closet!!

let me tell you a story.
In 1995 I had quadruple bypass surgery. Afterward I had to change my eating habits and began to exercise. I was walking 5 miles a day for several days a week until about 3 years ago when my legs and my lungs would no longer let me do it.
Anyway, I was walking in the lower level of a shopping mall near here. There was a room available for mall walkers to leave their coats and there was information available specifying the mileage for one cycle in the upper or lower level. Walking was always a time (about 90 minutes) when I had uninterrupted time and I got a lot of praying done. Well, I was walking and praying and just then I was praying and thinking about Galatians 6:1-2 and asking God to help me be more effective at "bearing one another's burdens" and three kids approached me walking toward me. Two guys (maybe 10-12) and a girl about the same age. They were all three walking with the girl between them and their arms over each other's shoulders. As they came nearer and passed me I realized that the girl in the middle was almost being carried by the two guys. Her legs looked like they were not really functioning. They were supporting her in an upright position as they three walked along together. I thought the Lord let that happen at that exact moment to show me how Christians are to support one another and even carry one another when necessary.

That is awesome. The opinions on here are just that, opinions. At the end of the day, hold fast to your beliefs and remain positive.
Great to hear of the uplifting service you had. Sounds like you needed it. Outstanding.

Oh, I always need it, and don't worry, the bickering and verbal slashing doesn't faze me. It's funny more than anything. I just had that funny thought on the way home and the difference between what I experienced at church and the tone I see here. It's a galaxy apart.

Indeed. There are so many arguments on here, so many debates over every single scripture, that sometimes we think debating is all people do. Then we actual go out into our real lives, and this stuff rarely gets brought up. Even when it does, it is talked about in far calmer terms.
That is the great thing about forums, however, and the internet in general. You can act out in ways that you would never act out in real life.
In spite of saying that, however, I think we can all agree that our lives would have been far less boring without AFF, lol. My workdays, at least.

There is NO DOUBT my interaction here on the internet is worlds apart from the way my real-life interaction is. My feelings I post are real, but the way I snap back at people....I would never do that in front of someone. Well, there's a couple I might take a swing at! :lol
there can be some pretty strong arguments and bickering on facebook also. I got into trouble with some folks because I used the term "triune" with God.

A few songs come to mind, such as, "Down From His Glory", and "He Looked Beyond My Faults." I know that older songs such as, "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God", if I'm not mistaken, are old saloon songs from the 1800's.
But just doing straight-up secular music in church that would be played on our pop or rock or country radio stations, I suppose I would have this question: Those of you that oppose the playing of these songs in church, do you ever listen to them outside the walls of the church? Maybe in your car, home, etc? I would enjoy hearing the answer to that question.
