View Full Version : What "type" of church do you attend?

I'm new here, and am trying to get a feel for the members on this forum. What "type" of church do you attend? However you want to answer is fine with me (UPCI, Oneness Pentecostal, WPF (help us all), COGIC, etc.).

I just want to say that I'm not looking for sarcasm or rudeness. I've only been on here a short time, and have quickly realized that a lot of you are just looking for an argument. If that's you, feel free to not respond.

And I'm not looking for an argument. I've found all I want here on the forum!

That's a pretty bold statement that other churches are just fakes. Have you been to every other church and spoken with every other pastor? Seems like you're judging churches based on their members. If you stick to that method of "judgement," I think you're missing out on quite a bit.

It was UPCI until 1998 or so. I was brought up UPCI. Dad pastored in NYC. I held license as well.

The church I attend was C of C for 25 years, then over the next 25 years, moved increasing toward evangelical, charismatic music and worship, with more of a expository preaching. Pastor audits classes at Regent University each July, has pastored at LHC for almost 20 years. LHC doesn't divide over doctrine, sees members as flawed individuals, in community following Christ to the best of our ability.

I was raised UPC, father pastored for over 30 years, much family in UPC. I am very Christ centric, as the savior of the whole world. 1 Tim. 4:10.

I currently attend an Independent Fundamental Baptist church... :D

Only due to living arrangements.

I was attending a *very* charismatic church before this one (night and day difference!)

And before that I was attending a Foursquare church.

I've moved in between every one of these churches...don't go thinking I church hop just for fun.

When I do attend church, which as of late has been not that much, I go to a church that was UPC but in the last year broke away and is not part of any organization. They believe everything the UPC does except for the dress code. Some members still wear skirts and don't cut their hair and some don't. No one really seems to care.

However, women still wear skirts on the platform. I think this still happens because if there were too dramatic of a change it would scare off a lot of people (especially the older generation).

the UPCI. We do work in fellowship with the UPCI.

What 'type' of church do I attend?

It's a brick building, with 6 entrances and a horseshoe-type foyer.

There are 6 entrances into the sanctuary, not including those leading from the prayer room, with the prayer room horseshoeing the opposite direction behind the platform.

The sanctuary seats about 3100, but it doesn't feel big and cold...a very homey atmosphere. :thumbsup

And to answer your question seriously, we are OP...

Houston, I understand you wanting to know what kinds of churches we all attend. But can I caution you about something? Please keep in mind that, while many of us no longer attend an Apostolic church, the vast majority of us do at least come from sort of Apostolic background. We "connect" with each other on here because it gives us a place to go back to our roots. I don't care to go to back to an Apostolic church. I love the churches I went to and will always be grateful for the teachings I received in them and for the friendships I made. But at this point in my life, that's not where I am. But because there was much about that time of my life that I loved, I do want to keep in contact with it somehow. AFF lets me do that.

You and I are very much in agreement on both those points. I didn't mean to indicate that we weren't, if I did. Thankfully, I don't think I've ever heard "I'm a Pentecostal." We did sing "I'm so Glad to be Called a One God Christian," though. That song is just as bad because it is often used to slam people for not being "conservative" enough, or to preach a favorite clothes line through song.

That sort of thing is rampant in my area, and it's truly sad.

The members of the Apostolic church of the 1st century couldn't run the aisles.....there were no aisles to run!!

Sadly the Apostolic aisle runners were not found for many centuries until the sudden appearance of Apostolic aisle runners after 1913.

I am probably one of the few on this forum that claim to not be oneness pentecostal anymore OR pentecostal at all.

When I came to this forum four or five years ago I was a guitar player in a strong UPC church. I had many questions. Our church split and I am now a reformed calvinist and attend a traditionally baptist church with about 8000 in attendance each Sunday. I still have family ties to the UPC but other than that I have almost no association with pentecostals or charismatics.
