Hello,

my name is Erika and I go to a UPC church in Lees Summit Missouri. I have a 2 and a half year old and am currently seriously considering homeschooling him instead of putting him in public schools. Anyone in that boat?

Welcome Erica. I am not in the same boat as you. My kids are both grown and they attended public school and lived for God the whole time and still are today. Folks have differing thoughts about public school but as far as my kids, It worked well. Plus, one of my kids got a full ride scholarship to a university and graduated with Zero $ balance.

Our children went to a local private Christian school, at a large conservative Baptist Church, all three are grown, two married (first grandson due on Valentine's Day, all three graduated college with honors.

We considered homeschooling, but with our first son being an adult with special needs, decided it would be too much. My wife now heads a local day program for adults with special needs, that have aged out of public schools. www.coventryreserve.com

4 of my "children" are in their forties now and one is fifty.
Back then the "Christian" schools around here were all trinity.
There were some oneness schools but they were not near here and I would not have wanted them teaching my children back then.

There is a lot of material available now for home schooling which was not available back when our children were young.

Honestly, the homeschooling idea was kind of a fleeting thought. I just worry about my son losing his sweet caring attitude once he starts school, lol. I also work full time right now and i doubt that would change by the time he is 5.

MissB is the homeschool expert here and probably its biggest supporter. I think that if you have the time and resources to homeschool and still get your son socialized and interacting with other kids (sports/karate/anything that he likes) then it may be a better approach than public school. However, if you don't have the time and resources to do it the way it needs to be done then you should stick with public school.

I home school my four kids. :) This is my first year of homeschooling again after having them in public school for 3 years. I can speak from both sides of the coin if you ever want to weigh your thoughts with someone.

Welcome, and we have HS'd a few yrs now, no regrets AT ALL. My kids are very active with other HS'ers in sports, dramas, ballet, etc. And they also do biblequizzing so theyre all busy bodies. They are impressive academically, and the biblical history my 13 yr old knows is amazing to me.(Had to brag on my "younguns"). Im pro HS. But I must say my spectacular wife carries the load with it tho.

Anyway, a definite weighing factor lies in JFrogs last sentence, IMO

Homeschooling is a big commitment, but its a lot of fun, too. For some great information from experienced parents, check out:

You're your kid's mom, and ultimately that makes you the authority on how your child will thrive best. :) I suggest that you do a lot of research on all types of schooling and then make your decision. If you think you'll still be working fulltime, you could consider a good private school.

I'm not personally a fan of public/government school, but for some people it works, and it serves its purpose.

Good luck, and you have a bit of time before you make a decision, so no need to make it now.

Btw, I believe "Hoovie" is a Missouri homeschooler, and he could probably give you some links, tips & resources. We homeschool in Oklahoma, and it's a very easy state to work with; we have a LOT of resources and a lot of support. It's easier to homeschool in some states than others.

JFrog: I'm not sure what my situation will be when he is 5 but who knows, the lord works in mysterious ways and it may be that im able to homeschool. Right now im trying to get him into the parents as teachers program in our area so he can interact more with kids in our area at his age.
