One of mine is when my mom bought me a hand held Atari game called Galaga for Christmas. I was probably 12 at the time. It looked like a mini arcade console, and had a tiny joystick. The screen was black and the graphics were in red and yellow only.
I wore that thing out in no time. Does anyone here remember the Atari game where you shot the big blobs out of the sky?

I remember the first Atari game where it was two lines on either side that went up and down and "ball" that you tried to hit to the other side.
Black and white and that's all it did.

Great entertainment for a bored kid. I used to take a tennis ball and throw it up against the brick facade of our front porch. It would bounce back in all sorts of weird ways. It helped to sharpen my reflexes.
Maybe that's kinda what Atari was shooting for? Sharpening our thumb reflexes.

I lived in Okinawa, Japan from 74-76. Moved there when I was 7 .
I went to to The World Expo 75', Played at the beach, ran thru the rice fields, bamboo, and Played base ball with the Japanese kids. I saw the movie Jaws and we did not want to swim at the beach no more.LOL
Then moved to Yokohama, Japan in 76 it was a blast! Then we moved to Jacksonville, Fla. in 1979.
Our family flew back on an Air Force "5-A Galaxy" cargo jet. I got to set in the captains seat and turn the plane left, right and pulled it up 5000 ft. That was very awesome for a kid turning 12 years old.
The seventies are full of too many good memories for me.
I had a fun childhood.

One of my favorite memories is Sunday mornings, listening to WLS radio, which was a rock station in Chicago for several years. Now, understand that we were 'in church' and I was puzzled why my mom listened to that and kept the radio on while we were getting dressed, since she didn't even listen to country music (in the 70's, country music was rancid, talking about adultery and such). She told me that WMBI, which was the Moody Bible Institude station didn't come on the radio in the house well enough to wake her up.
I still am puzzled why she kept it on though. I remember asking her what a booty was (Shake Your Booty) and she told me it was a baby shoe. That song always puzzled me after that......LOL!

I wasn't allowed to watch anything other than cartoons. My dad watched violent shows like Gunsmoke, Maverick, and Bonanza.
When I was about 6, I was allowed to watch Wonder Woman, Bionic Woman and $6 M man. When I was 7, I proved how violent those shows were when I was in the kitchen one day and kicked my 3 yr old cousin in the face, knocking him against the fridge while screaming "WONDER WOMAAAAAN!!"
Since my parents were in the process of divorcing, she tossed the TV out and we never had one in our home as long as I lived there.
Of course, now times have changed and she has a TV in every room, complete with satellite.....ROFL!

I was looking at a cartoon this afternoon - Ice Age The Meltdown. It says, "You're crazy a** mother." Doodoo bugs saying, Cr**.
I was also amazed to hear the cats say, Da** on Stuart Little. Far cry from the book I read in Elementary School!

Movies nowadays are awful for the kids. Even Shrek, which I like, uses words that mean one thing but are used to mean another.
Like the donkey being referred to as an a$$, but not meaning donkey!
I hate when they try to get those words in like that thinking the kids won't catch on. Yeah, right. My kids caught it, and they never hear that kind of language!

It's funny how you hear kids AND adults use words at church and you know it started on some of the shows. For instance "butt" was what everyone was using for a while and now it's and "cr**". I hear lots of people saying, "cr**".

I watched a scary movie once. I don't recall the name, but it had to do with a nasty, crusty mummy, a beautiful woman, and she sacrificed young beauties by cutting their necks and collecting their blood in a chalice, then drinking it and offering it to the mummy.
As if that wasn't sick enough, he then kissed her. I remember his crusty nose touching her face and how sickening that looked. I was recalling that moment after I was home and in bed and suddenly vomited! LOL!

This thread is interesting... in Kansas we were not allowed to play video games because it might get back to the gestapo...
But I had a secondary thought... I wonder how many people who are rigid ultra-cons now, were wild and crazy at some point in their life -either not growing up in church or "backsliding" and then returning (like off the deep-end wild) and then moved back to an ultra-con position later in life. I see a lot of people who talk about all the wild rock and roll things they did back in the day but are conservative now (not pressing-on... and not just on this thread. lol). And some of us who seem to be able to control our impulses have never went that far off the deep-end in the first place so do not see the necessity of all of the extra rules.

No, my favorite 70s memory doesn't really have to do with that decade even though the event took place then. My favorite 70s memory (okay, two memories) is when I first came to Christ through the ministry of The 700 Club in December 1976 and when I received the baptism of the Holy Ghost through the ministry of The 700 Club in early November 1977 (in the days before Pat Robertson got involved in the dominion theology heresy).

Asteroids software simulation was a fabulous visual demonstration of the foundational physical law...."every action having an equal an opposite reaction" and the principles of conservation of momentum were also made readily apparent! I think I actually appreciated physics in college so much more because of my enjoyment of Asteroids (including that sweet, low frequency sound when you fired your thrusters).
Ah yes....
many a quarter was given in support of shooting white dots in an effort to explode other jagged dots, all the while dodging those pesky little space ships that just kept getting smaller and faster.
My best seventies memory was the culmination of the build-up to the bi-centenial celebration in Philly. As area residents, me and my friends walked across the Ben Franklin Bridge on July 4th, 1976 (NJ toward Philly) in some imagined reliving of coming to Philadelphia for the signing.

The car stayed in one place, and the whole screen moved around it.
My parents bowled.
Bowling alleys in my town were the only place pinball machines and this new thing, these video consoles, we at.
The car racing video came out.
One any given day, you might have 8-10 folks with their quarters on the console (yet somehow everybody knew which quarter theirs was in the order:thumbsup ).
My brother and I were avid competitors in that game and 'skittle bowl'. We would keep any quarters to play that driving game. NOte: In thinking back now, I should have considered the scary power that virtual reality has over males in general, young males specifically!
PP, I was very GOOD at that game thanks to a considerable investment (I had a job, I was rich!). It was some kind of adrenline rush when you just had the pedal down and were dodging by making all those abrupt maneuvers (and a good crowd was standing behind you).

records when I first came on the scene....at least from what i remember my mom having. I remember when i could record myself on cassette tapes.... that was the coolest thing ever... I recorded right over my mothers "Hinsens" tape. It was n't funny then but it is a crackk up to listen to me and Kenny Hinsen sing..!!!
Somehow, my mom was able to record over an "Eric Clapton and the Animals" 8-track, but it didn't completely take, or the recording wasn't long enough to cover it completely.
Was strange to listen to Howard and Vesta for about 3/4 of the tape and this other guy, who was unknown to most in the 70's....LOL!
Where she got that 8 track I don't know. I never did ask either.
My mom still has her 8 tracks, hoping they will make a comeback someday......:D

We had a little hamburger joint in our small town called "Don's" that we would go to and play those games. Another favorite was Joust. We would do just what you mentioned. we would stand behind whoever was playing and watch the action on the screen.

Chicago was my favorite non Christian band of all time.
I was into music in the 80's, as I was a teen then. Journey, Survivor, Toto, Madonna, Michael, Eagles, REO, Bob Seger, Fleetwood Mac, Chicago, 38 Special.....I loved them all.....LOL!
My mother hated my music. She forbid me to listen to any of it, but I turned it on softly and kept it on all night long.

I remember growing up and a friend of mine was a huge KISS fan. They scared me to death because they looked like and sounded like the debbil incarnate, not to mention the blood and gore.
I recently pulled a YouTube video of their song, "I was made for loving you baby." and I just about fell on the floor laughing, the sad thing is that their money is no joke.

I had a little green record player that had an AM radio built in. I would stick it under my pillow at night and listen to all the clear channel stations from around the country like WCCO in Minneapolis, WLS in Chicago, KMOX in St Louis, WWL in New Orleans and more. It was fascinating to a kid with no tv.
Late night music with WLS in Chicago was the best!! :thumbsup

Cars and the seventies....ouch, this topic is a little more painful memories.
My high school allowed seniors to take five courses in the morning and then leave at noon. This option took the school bus option off the table. Car pools became a best alternative choice.
My car pool was with 3 other guys:
1. Larry; a 68 Cadilac coup-de-ville convertable, he hand brush painted it yellow. It rocked.
2. John; first in our peer group to have a Ford van custom conversions with wood framing for a bed and ofcourse, shag carpetted walls.
3. Eric had his parents Vista Cruiser with the sky lights on the side of the way back seat.
4. I had my grandmom's (she lived with us) 64 Falcon with a metal dash board that would split your forehead like a ripe mellon if the two every made contact. That Falcon was automotive humble pie but compared to walking, it was a much needed option.
My dad had a Chevy Impala. He let me splice into the radio wiring to install my first FM converter so my friends and I could listen to the cool radio stations. What a patient dad, I don't think the front speakers ever quite worked the same unless you had the balance set to the left speaker and the fader set to the back!:nod

Hey Tamor, until I was 12 we lived in the Kuntry on my grandparents farm. It was right on the Ark/Mo line. Our community had a post office and an honest to goodness old timey general store.
We used to walk down the gravel road to the store and trade in our sodypop bottles for candy money. Sheer heaven!
There was a low water bridge we used to stop at on the way back. We would roll up our pants legs and wade in the creek to cool off in the summer. I could tell stories about my grandparents farm forever!

Pop Rocks and Coke! LOL!
Pop Rocks!!! I never liked those. They were scary!!! :killinme
Have you ever seen anyone put peanuts in their Coke? Lord, it's look like they gagged and spit in their Coke only to drink it again. :vomit

I remember how cool it was when aluminum cans came out. You could crush them so easily!
Remember when they had those tabs you had to pull completely off the can? We used to pull them off, drop them into the can, then drink the pop (you know... "soda").

He was the first big name casualty of steroid abuse.
Do you guys remember terry cloth shirts and square bottom knit ties. Those ties were a pain to make into a knot!
I don't know if they would have been called terry cloth but I had what I think was called a "guaze" material shirt. Man, I thought I was some kind of gift to the women:ursofunny . This tight fitting shirt pulled around my scrawny biceps and triceps.
My mom told me POINT BLANK when she saw that thing in the laundry hamper...if its going to get ironed, you'll be the one doing it. Its can be very hard being a gift!

PP,
You reminded me of when we had the bright idea to ride horses and steal some watermelons. My dad had 500 acres of them, but we didn't want his!
We tied up the horses, crawled down a row at a neighbors field, grabbed a melon, pushed it back up the row, got on the horses, jumped a creek and went back to the farm. Cut it open and it wasn't even ripe.
We told our father years later. He laughed his head off.

We used to do the same thing at the golf course. We would go get the balls that they guys hit across the street, take them into the club office and they would buy them back from us for practically pennies. Then we would hit the vending macines at the club. We would sit by the pool and eat and pretend that we were members of the golf course, when of course none of us were!!

I remember when our mother dropped us off at the Country Club to swim and had forgotten to pay the fee for the month. We had to sit there while she went home to get her checkbook. Gosh, I was embarrassed!!!

Dude, cherish the memories.
Dear God, that our children could know this kind of simple pleasure.
A general store
a wooden floor
your own money
buying little things
munching and enjoying
on the way back
to playing in a creek
....and heaven will be EVEN more wonderful!

Poke salad is a green found in the ozarks. You put a strip of bacon in it and boil it.
