I remember Hoove saying he likes the lullaby (or nursery) channel.

I listen to Jim Brickman radio. I really like that. I also listen to Mountain Stream and some oldies.

Well I do like the Lullaby songs, but also listen to Peter Paul & Mary, John Denver, Billy Joel, Tom Paxton, and Vineyard, and some Bluegrass.

I just create new channels around the artist or group.

I always find it interesting how many Christian people listen to secular music on a regular basis. No judgments. I just find it interesting.

I "ain't askeered" of secular music and I might listen to a song here or there once or twice a year and most years I won't at all but that's just never been my lifestyle and it always catches me by surprise I guess.

Very cool. I have a PP and Mary station and I LOVE John Denver's music. Billy Joel is okay.

Like I alluded to... I don't view certain types of music as the "devils music". I have just lived my life with Christian music and I listen to it every day.

I just don't have much use for what secular music has to say. It isn't as much about how "bad" some music is as it is how much I enjoy what Christian music has to say.

For me it's more about the style than anything I suppose. I don't care for Country Gospel or Contemporary Gospel much at all. But the vineyard stuff is not bad and a lot of the Bluegrass is Gospel. I do have a Roby Duke CD I enjoy, too.

Certainly discernment should be used. There are songs that I listen to that are not appropriate for my daughters.

Yeah, but instrumentals don't say anything. ;) When I was in the church, I missed listening to music I grew up with. It was like a black hole in my heart. I grew up singing with my mother a lot. We did quite a bit of music together. And then, it was like ( ) .................nothing. But listening to it was "evil", so I didn't................

I play the sax so I enjoy a good instrumental. A little David Coz or Kenny G. :)

I guess you can say that we feel the spirit of the song. I am not a musician. I do not understand music. I "feel" it and can break it down by what I feel, and rarely by what I hear -to the surprise of my musically gifted friends.

It's not really like that. No one is sneaking around... it's more about being age appropriate. My wife and I also might watch a PG 13 movie that our kids don't.

I am pretty much opposed to the "if it's not Christian you can't see it listen to it or enjoy it" mindset in general - even for the kids.

My oldest will be the star in The Little Princess at our theater next month. There is some "war" even some "drinking" in the show and would not be considered a Christian play at all. Yet there is much good in the play and we encourage her participation.

I think it's important to teach maturity in these things and understand we should never simply be a sponge for what we hear and see. (even at church... but that is a different subject. Or is it?)

I pretty much view music the same way.

No... I really can't. I remember feeling that way when I was at friends' houses when I was a kid and they would listen to secular music. Not only was that long ago but I probably didn't even know the song anyway.

And I just don't listen to secular music except for what might be contained in the occasional email link to a video containing such etc.

Yes sir. I agree... on all points.

I have taught my kids that "this music" or "that music" isn't bad. Some would think they were sinning if they listened to a song that wasn't christian. But I have also taught them that we should consider what we do listen to and whether the messages are something we want a steady diet of.

There are certain things that are okay to eat but would not be okay to make our steady diet. It would eventually have a negative impact on our bodies.

The same goes for music and our spirit.

I bought my daughter Kelly Clarksons first CD. She wanted it. No problem.

I just have to teach them about decisions and pray they make the right ones. She's probably had that CD and maybe one more secular CD in her lifetime. But hundreds of gospel CD's and trips to lots of concerts.

So... I said that to say this. I agree with you completely on the subject of teaching spiritual maturity rather than layout out a list of do's & don'ts.

I've seen people flake out because somebody played a secular song etc. That's not strength. That's weakness.

So... again... we agree.

LOL!!!! Hoovie--it's okay to have FUN with music. And that video is 100% FUN. There's nothing terribly spiritual about it (although I would classify this song as an African-American Spiritual) ...it's just fun. I cannot STAND most contemporary Christian music. It all sounds exactly the same. The same chords, the same tunes, the same whiny singing... on and on and on. I try to force myself to listen to our contemporary station sometimes, and I usually make it about 3 seconds before I'm reaching for the switch. It just grates on me like fingernails on a chalkboard.

The 70's and 80's had some GREAT Christian music. That's still my favorite.

Ditto!!! Everybody things they can write songs these days. The result is most songs are horrible to mediocre at best.

Not only contemporary christian music on the radio but praise and worship music in churches including my own. So many worship songs have great lyrics but are way too wordy and have no real melody. It is a chore to sing them and you definitely have to have the words on a screen.

The Imperials were my favorite group as a kid and teenager then when he became a member I could hardly listen to them.

Russ has sang at Christ Church a couple of times during special services or a music conference. He has some real "daddy issues" from his youth and seems very resentful still in many ways. I have a hard time with adult men who blame a little hardship from being a preachers kid growing up on being dysfunctional today. How about a little self responsibility??

Yes bread has a very mellow sound. I just had one of their CDs at home from the library here a while back. The BeeGees, well they were popular but quite different. ;) We were never into disco much. It was kind of "uncool" to like disco. But I can't say I disliked it either.

He's actually gotten pretty much past that in the past few years. His dad was an alcoholic... and a preacher. They had some very real issues that never got worked out before his father died. Russ also struggled with addiction for a while. I read his story online somewhere, very interesting. But at some point a few years ago he really had a breakthrough. I think you can tell it in him now, he's much more peaceful.

Pandora is a website. If you have a computer you have Pandora. Pandora.com - you can create your own 'station' to listen to.

Oh I see I didn't know that.

Yes. I think it stays free if you keep it under 40 hrs a month.

I love LOVE LOVE Jim Brickman's music. Check him out on Pandora. Every time I heard his music, I would say "Wow! Who is that??" I figured it out and have a station all him. :)

I have pandora on my iphone. It is great.

The Call (Michael Been and the Call influenced everybody but never made it bigtime)
U2 (should have been here from the beginning.
Ryan Adams (my newest find, I like this guy very eclectic)
Dead Milkmen (cant help myself and dont want to! )
Steven Curtis Chapman (love this guy)
The Flaming Lips (heard about them checked them out, never deleted the station)
Chuck Mangione (wacky right?)
Praise and Worship (I listen to this most of the time and when I am praying this is generally on)
Trace Adkins (ok my guilty pleasure. Honkey Tonk Badonk-a-donk cracks me up!)
Ray Charles (who doesnt love Ray???)
Train (solid)
Jack Johnson (immaromanticwhatcanisay?)
Michael Buble (immaromanticwhatcanisay?)
Brandon Heath (I have no idea what this is)
Salvador (maybe my favorite group. certainly my favorite christian group)
Hillsong (havent deleted it yet. too much "Jesus is my boyfriend" junk")
Chris Tomlin (great stuff)
Phillips, Craig, and Dean (love me some PCD)
Johathan Butler (I love jazz and this kind in particular. plus his christian stuff is off the hook good)

Somehow I ended up listening to the Bee Gees 'Stayin' Alive'.

Was halfway thru the song before I realized I was actually groovin' to the music sitting in my chair. :doh

And then I woke up and changed it. :heeheehee
