The story behind this song is AMAZING! It was accidently played over a secular station, putting David and the Giants on the charts!

I've met David and his band (2 brothers and his son) on a couple of occasions and he is a true gentleman. They were also an incredible band to see live. They sounded just like their albums, and the place went up in smoke when they rocked!

I actually had the cassette tape of the radio station that was wondering who wrote the song since it was on a cd and mislabelled as a SOUL TO SOUL song! The radio show had people calling in and saying they never knew who it was but to not stop playing it, since they felt something powerful from it. Eventually someone who knew David and the group called and revealed who it was.

They played it over the secular radio in St. John, NB, CANADA, where Lloyd Bustard is from. And it was pitted against a ROLLING STONES song in a battle of songs, and beat the Stones' song!!! I had a copy of the tape of the "match" and David wanted a copy.

The First (likely only) Christian hardcore band. by the time they arrived on scene most of the original Austin TX hardcore people had gone away, Big Boys, MDC (a.k.a. the stains) and the D**ks, moved off to San Francisco, DRI went somewhere, Jerry's Kids.. busted up. John Atkinson joined the navy. I don't know who they were reaching for, all the Austin originals were long gone...

NOT FOR ME!!!!

I learned that folks who preached against christian rock and contemporary music hated contemporary and rock while in the world and their flesh loved country and western. IOW, their fleshliness carried into their later Christian convictions. Go figure. Nothing wrong with enjoying Christian versions of country music, but do not make it a conviction and heaven/hell issue!

I usually do not like the "Christian version" of anything whether it be music or a literature style. It is sort of like food. I have YET to like anything where they took an existing dish and made a more healthy version of it by substituting ingredients for "fat free". Now I have had dishes which just happened to be VERY healthy and delicious at the same time because they didn't try to copy something.

Guys like Steve Taylor are not, to my knowledge, copying any other artist directly. He and others have their own unique sound. Maybe it is just Christian music of the past 15 years which has me so depressed at its pure awfulness. The music is in a word, boring, with uninspired guitar strumming and even more boring rhythms.

It was originaly played at 94 TYX in Jackson, MS............ Southerern rock station....... I still chat with Rayborn and Clayborn.... Played a gig back
with them in the 90's........

what is the definition of "rocky"?

Why is country and bluegrass ok to listen to in church?

Jay

I know that all pastors set guidelines for their churches, and then individuals place further guidelines in their homes, so I will not be overly harsh for those who enjoy such things, However, I believe there is a channel that is pleasing to God. I do not care for much of the praise and worship style, but there is a bit that is acceptable. I do not find that rock music of any type it conducive to a moving of the Holy Ghost.

However, I am not your nor anyone else' pastor. Nor do I walk with God for you, but to me that was a bit more potent than even the rockiest music that I will listen to. (Like to take my head off as some people say.)

It does not help that I am sensitive to certain sounds and noises, and those tend to be emphasized in rocky music.

The Key is my friend, are you a Jesus Freak????:thumbsup

There was a man from the desert with naps in his head
The sand that he walked was also his bed
The words that he spoke made the people assume
There wasn't too much left in the upper room

With skins on his back and hair on his face
They thought he was strange by the locusts he ate
The pharisees tripped when they heard him speak
Until the king took the head of this Jesus freak

Define "rock music" please

Define "rock music" please

BTW I doubt God is pleased by tones and wave lengths.

I was tempted to ask if you were referring to hair, but I decided to behave.

Rock music, defined by me as you asked (seeing as how the internet refused to give me aid), is characterized as follows. A heavy dominating beat that can be easily distinguished over or through all other music, usually being a combination of base guitar and drums, music that is loud enough to prevent the words from being heard with ease and clarity, and an over abundance of electronic distortions in the various instruments, lyrics are sung in a rappish manner and may or may not be easily understood.

This is of course not necessarily a total and complete list, nor does it mean that I have avoided everything that I have just described. I do not believe that it is just any one of these that creates rock music as I have it defined, but the more of these definitions that is filled by a song, the more likely I am to define it as rock. (apologies for the extensive post)

This is a little subjective. Most music I hear, that is not even classified as rock, has a heavy dominating beat. Music that is not like that has a dominating instrument of some other kind. Most loud music I hear also has a loud voice singing so the words are understandable.

Distortions I can concur is a stable of most rock.

Rap? That does not seem the norm in most rock styles.

Ive been in the most conservative of services and there was a loud drum and bass combination and none of the conservative people there seemed to consider it rock

I am not saying that my definition is not flawless, but those are some of the most obvious items that lend themselves to being called 'rock'. As I said, it is when there is more than just one element present that it starts pushing the limit. It is not a perfect line, but you did ask me for something slightly subjective. ;)

I could list all of the possible ways that music could combine some of those elements and not be rock (bad acoustics in the building for exampled drowning out the singers). However, I am not inclined to list. This is just a guideline so you understand what I am saying when I say something is rocky.

What Im saying is, there is nothing inherently spiritual or evil in musical styles.

Some rock styles might be more conducive to concentrating on God in prayer and some rock styles might not. That might also often depend on the personal preference of the individual

But there is nothing evil or spiritual about tones or wave lengths. Most of it is subjective feelings based on a prejudice.

There are some "rock" sounds I could and some I could not worship to.

That is why I said what I did before, the pastor draws a line, and then we draw our lines within the established line. That is why I also said, "I am not anybody's pastor." I may refine my scope of it a bit, but it will take a while, I have not ever actually stopped to analyze the music for what made me consider it rocky. I just knew that some of it crossed boundaries that I was not willing to cross. So that is a first working definition. And I do believe that I stated it was a bit subjective.

Yeah...I don't believe the pastor can draw the line for someone else based on his own prejudice.

He might have more say over music in a church meeting but I think he would be well advised to not apply his prejudice on everyone, when we realize it's more of a personal preference than a spiritual issue

We will have to agree to disagree. The Pastor is to the watchman on the wall, and he answers to God for each saint. Thus I do not have a problem with him setting a certain standard. And I agree, everyone has there personal styles they like (I do not afflict my pastor with endless classical music). ;)

We all are commanded to watch. Where does the bible say a watchman can make up his own rules and force them on others?

A true watchman teaches others what the bible says. They are wise in the Word.

As far as watching
2Jn 1:8 Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward.

Gal 6:1 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.

If we are to watch ourselves, what do Pastors do when watching out for us? They give us biblical tools to be watchful ourselves. Pastors are not baby sitters. They are teachers, not rule setters

God tells Ezekiel that he was a watchman on the wall and to warn both the righteous and the wicked. The righteous so that they would not leave the right way, and the wicked so that he would not continue in sin. God told him that the blood of those whom he did not warn would be required of him.

Hebrews 13:17 states that we are to submit to those who have the rule over us, for they must answer to God for our souls. And we want them to be able to do so with joy and not with grief for that would not bode well for us. (my paraphrase).

Right. There is nothing INHERENTLY spiritual in musical styles. The spiritual component is how the music is used. Otherwise music is music.

Where someone hears a country tune in a church service and thinks it's spiritual because of the music, if that were the case all country music would be spiritual.

Music is music. It's sound vibrations. There is nothing spirit about it. Words put to music has the ability to affect our emotions but one does not need to be spiritual to have emotions
