View Full Version : What needs to be "preached against"?
Timmy

I remember a post in the not too distant past (though I can't find it now) that said something about preaching against murder, homosexuality, and (if I recall correctly) stealing. At the time, I wondered "Hmm. Do preachers really preach against murder? Is it really necessary to preach against it?" For some reason, which escapes me now, I didn't post these ponderings at the time. So now I will. Er, I did.
So, you preachers, how often do you preach against the sin of murder? Is there really ever anyone in your congregation who doesn't already know murder is wrong? You non-preachers, how often have you heard preaching against murder? Did you need to hear it? ;)

If preachers started preaching against women in general that would cover at least 80-85% of the things preached against in conservative circles.
But then again, I suppose if they started doing that who would they have to throw another log on the fire?

What? Murder is a sin? Gee, I wish I would have read this thread before that guy cut me off on the interststate earlier today. Well, guess I'
ll be seeing you guys in 20 years to life.
Serously though, and I'll probably be tarred and feather for this but.... I've heard so much preaching against stuff for so many years. "Don't do this and don't do that." I can remember a time when I was almost afraid of dong anything because our preacher might preach against it. We've (and I include myself in this ) preached against everything for so long, and, I gotta tell you, I don't think we've made alot of progress. It seems, in fact, that we've digressed toward our goal of a sinless society rather than progress toward it. I don't think we are making much headway. So, maybe its time to change tatics and start preaching for some stuff. I'm FOR "the right to life" rather than against "the right for abortion", (which is, by the way, murder). I'm FOR purity and holiness in God's church. I'm FOR the unity of the Body of Christ. I'm FOR the operation of the gifts of the Spirit. I'm for the Gospel of repentance, baptism in Jesus Name, and the gift of the Holy Ghost. I'm FOR the coming of Jesus and the catching away of His Bride. I'm FOR more than I am against. I'm more of a Pro, than I am a Con.

OneAccord, I very much agree.
Although, Timmy, I do wish that some preachers I've known would have preached against murder... Jesus' way:
Mt 5:21“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not murder,a and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.
I think the color red needs to be preached against more. Anybody who has ever seen a cartoon or any other illustration of the devil knows he is red so the color must be evil.
Plus the Bible clearly states that Eve at an apple and apples are red.
Oh, and jezebel no doubt wore red makeup.

As with all things there must be a balance.
Just ask Paul.
He did quite a bit of "preaching against stuff".

Don't you think renaming this article to "Does murder really need to be preached against?" better suit the purpose..
I was about to answer the question, all sin... but then I read your intro lol

If you teach people to follow after the Spirit, they won't fulfill the lusts of the flesh. According to Paul, anyway.

As a know it all young preacher, I saw a woman in the congregation with very short hair. So, I put her in my sights and spent a good part of my so-called sermon railing against her short, cut hair. I pretty much told her she was in the express lane for hell-fire and damnation.
I found out later that she was a cancer patient who had lost most of her hair to cancer treatment. I have never preached against womens hair again. In fact, I laid the Bible down soon after that and have never preached another sermon.

Tapes! I have tapes! For you love seed gift of 1263.29, I will send you a tape. Actually, I have no tape. Got rid of them too.
If I "preach" again, it'll be on this keyboard, not in (or is it behind) a pulpit. Besides, Ricky Taylor said I am a better writer than I was a preacher.
Why is it when you're standing outside, looking at a church, you are looking at the FRONT of the church. You go inside, you are now standing at the BACK of the church, though you just entered the FRONT of the church. To go toward the altar, you are going to the FRONT of the church, which, technically, is really the BACK of the church? No wonder we're confused!

I see why you quit preaching! You couldn't find the pulpit and when you did you didn't know whether to get behind it or in it! lol :heeheehee
Enjoy your posts. Wish you had a tape of a sermon! If I ever decide to reveal my identity I'll let you come preach for me. Of course you might not want to! Who knows?

I have never understood how even ultra cons would want to do what you did to that woman yet I have seen and heard it with my own eyes and ears.
Not only do some preachers do that but seem to take great pleasure in it. As if they are hunting. Maybe you can shed light on what your paradigm / thought process was back when you did it.

No, I appreciate that Bro. Thinkin.... but, I won't be gettin' no tents no time soon. I kinda wish I hadn't posted this. Its really depressiing. (Hence the injected futile attempt at humor). I really feel bad about what I did back then. Thats the very reason I try to be very slow at judging people. I don't know why they do what they do, and I certainly don't know whats going on in their lives.

Hey cut out being depressed. I'm impressed by your honesty. There are a bunch of preachers still out there that think they are "doing God's business" being as harsh as they can be. If you've asked God to forgive you, and I feel certain you have, then forget it. He has!
Keep posting. You make sense! And there are some posters that don't have that to claim! Okay, maybe I'm one of them, but you keep it up. You do make sense!

You don't agree that 80-85% of "standards" apply toward women? If UC's simply preached against women in general it would cover the majority of all issues. Not all of course, but most.

I think more emphasis needs to be put on non pulpit ministry sometimes...some wanna preach but they dont wanna minister outside of that venue....the priority should be deliever the message whenever and wherever pulpit or not.

Most Christians don't know how to stop sinning. If they did they wouldn't sin. Most church leaders don't know how to teach them how to overcome sin because they have not overcome it either. And some in some circles they say there is no way to overcome sin totally. You can try and scare it out of them, make them feel condemned by it and on and on.
It is overcome with truth within the truth and that is what should taught. All religious sanctimony will not remove the influence of sin upon the believer or even out of the world. The world in it's sinful ways must repent or else face eternal judgement. How sad to realize that Jesus paid for your sins and you may have missed heaven just because you have rejected Him. Wow!!

Not true in my opinion.
For almost every "standard" on women you can find one for men.
At least in my experience.

No i don't agree at all. Being holy and trying to live a life that is separate from this world has little to do with gender. Separation is for men and women.
